Washington Mystics History

The Washington Mystics are a professional women's basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Since their introduction in 1998 as one of the WNBA’s first expansion franchises, the Mystics have topped the Eastern Conference twice and won the WNBA Finals in 2019. The team was led in their early seasons by multi-season rebounding champion Chamique Holdsclaw and four-time All-Star Alana Beard. The Mystics reached their first Finals in 2018 behind the play of two-time WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne. Washington returned to the Finals in 2019, winning a thrilling 3-2 series against the Connecticut Sun and delivering D.C. its first professional basketball title since 1978. Delle Donne won her second career MVP in 2019 while shooting the WNBA’s only 50-40-90 season, and teammate Natasha Cloud was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

Great entertainment. Mystics has fortunately added three local players to their roster. The stadium is filled with excitement and good family entertainment. Awesome idea to utilize youth for cheerleaders. The half time entertainment was better than what I would have expected. However, one down fall was so many interruption for free give aways during the game. Very interested in attending more games in the future Will call representatives moved customers through very fast. Customer Representatives was proffessional, courteous and respectfall. Great overall experience.

  • A great event

by CanadianInDC on 9/14/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

It was my first time watching a WNBA game, and was genuinely impressed. The crowd was very supportive of their home team, and there were more people there than I really expected. Minimal lineups at concession stands. Ticket prices very reasonable. Mystics Mayhem dance crew was terrific, half time show entertaining....and very classy for a player to come out onto the floor at the end of the game to thank the fans for their support. Overall very happy with the venue, and event overall - and the Mystics won!!!

The Mystics were awesome! That was one of the most exciting games and the crowd absolutely adore Coleman! It's wonderful to see another Washington team in the playoffs!

  • Go Mystics

by catsbooksandblues on 9/4/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first live WNBA game. It was such a different experience! Unlike TV, I could follow the overall game the whole time. And Verizon Center's big screen still showed the replays closeup. The flow of the game seemed different, and I felt much more connected to the players. They are outstanding athletes. I am lucky to see them in person, to see their focus and dedication. Great seats too, even though it was a single-ticket purchase. Best of all, we beat Seattle--here's hoping for the playoffs.

  • expect great......

by nafabnw on 9/1/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I'm hooked...WNBA delivers...professionalism, athleticism, entertainment, family fun; in addition promoting women's health issues with the likes of Fran Drescher. Especially impressed with the ball handling of Charde Houston (Lynx) and Lindsey Harding (Mystics). Excellent game (and dare I say "no matter which team wins or loses"?). The five or six year-old fan two rows in front of me knew the players and the plays..she had her say to the referee calls and home team exploits. What a joy to hear this youngster's unabashed vocal expression, cheering and booing, and to witness that the young women in the WNBA are role models inspiring our youth to be their very best in every pursuit. Hurray to the Mystics, the Lynx and the WNBA.

  • AWESOME GAME

    by RRP1 on 8/31/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first game in a lot time. I realized how exciting it was to be in the mix and I will be back. The women played a good game. Although, it was a lot of new faces on the team, they played well.

  • good game

by sarraqui on 8/31/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

It was great. I took my 5yr old daughter because some boy in here class told her girls can't play basketball. So she got to see all women playing in a great enviornment. To top it off it was breast cancer awareness event so she loved it.

  • Good, Family Fun for a Good Cause

My title pretty much says it all... only thing I would add is it was a good opportunity to hang-out with my daughter.

  • WNBA has gotten much better

    by Scotty06 on 8/17/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Very competitive play. Came down to the last play in a double overtime game. Very affordable and fun atmosphere. Families can all have fun together for a very low price.

  • Womens' Basketball is Awesome!

by TRyans on 8/17/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This game wasn't the best I've seen the Mystics play but it was a good game. Mystics lost by one shot, but what an amazing experience for fans of womens' basketball.

  • Mystics rock!

This was probably the best game I have ever attended. Double overtime, what more could you ask for?

  • Great family fun with Mystics

    by MImom2 on 8/15/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

We went to see the Mystics play the Detroit Shock last week. We got the family tickets which included a hot dog, chips and soda for each of us. It was a fantastic night of family entertainment and GREAT basketball! Our two girls love Bball and it was exciting for them to watch women play at the professional level--and right in front of them. The entertainment between plays, etc. was engaging and fun-loving. The camera put just about everybody up on the big screen which was a thrill for the kids. What a great way to spend a family night out!! Worth every penny!

  • Outstanding!!! WNBA all the way.....

    by Houstongirl09 on 8/13/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

  • Mystics

by georgiana on 8/12/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The game was good. Even though the Mystics lost they worked hard, the score was close. The girls played with heart. They played well. I enjoyed that part of the event. What I didn't care for was the "lull time entertainment". The focus seemed to be riveted on getting people to stand up and "gyrate" for the crowd. Time out entertainment could be more tastefully done and I don't think it should be necessary to "entertain" people to some intense level every second. It distracted from the game.

  • WNBA game

    by Ty12 on 8/12/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The game was great! A lot of action! I took my daughters for the first time and they had a blast! I will definitely come back and recommend it to everyone.

  • Good game, but overall not worth the money

by GingerMI on 8/10/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

We enjoyed the Mystics game, but we could have done without all the loud music, flashing lights, and advertisements everywhere. The ambiance was not at all what I expected at a professional basketball game. (I now suspect, however, that this is typical. What a shame!) We wanted to focus on the game, but it seemed like the game was almost secondary to all the "entertainment" taking place. We paid $40 per ticket for front row seats that were past one end of the court. When I ordered the tickets, I knew what section they were in, but I assumed the seats would be facing the court. They were not. We had to either turn our heads or sit at an angle in our seats to watch the entire game--not exactly comfortable. The seats were like folding chairs, and they were uncomfortably close together. It was nearly impossible to avoid being in physical contact with the woman next to me the whole time (and neither of us is overweight). The price of food at the concession stands is appalling. Never again!

  • THE GAME WAS EXCITING

    by KJ24 on 8/4/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

THE GAME WAS VERY EXCITING. I REALLY ENJOYED IT. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A LOT MORE REWARDING HAD THE MYSTICS WON.

  • Mystics were awesome!

    by 2qt2bstraight on 8/3/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The game was great. The audience had a chance to get involved and it made the game more fun to watch. I was unaware until I arrived at the game that it was also gospel night. After watching the Mystics play a great game and win I had the pleasure of seeing on of my favoite gospel artistes Dettrick Haddon perform. It was a wonderful night and can't wait to go to another Mystics game.

  • Great game even though we losted

This was great game and great seats... Great time even though we lost.
