Washington Mystics History

The Washington Mystics are a professional women's basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Since their introduction in 1998 as one of the WNBA’s first expansion franchises, the Mystics have topped the Eastern Conference twice and won the WNBA Finals in 2019. The team was led in their early seasons by multi-season rebounding champion Chamique Holdsclaw and four-time All-Star Alana Beard. The Mystics reached their first Finals in 2018 behind the play of two-time WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne. Washington returned to the Finals in 2019, winning a thrilling 3-2 series against the Connecticut Sun and delivering D.C. its first professional basketball title since 1978. Delle Donne won her second career MVP in 2019 while shooting the WNBA’s only 50-40-90 season, and teammate Natasha Cloud was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

It was my first WNBA Game, and I loved it. The crowd and stadium were amazing as were the Mystics who beat the Connecticut Sun 84-74. I definitly recommend going to a game for basketball fans of all ages.

  • Basketball: A TEAM Sport!

by NewAgainWNBAFan on 7/30/10Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Basketball is a team sport. It was good to see that these ladies have not forgotten that. I haven't watched much of the WNBA the past few years. I plan on changing that.

Was disappointed that we (Mystics) didn't win, but overall it was a great experience... The staff was excellent and the fans were great... Floor seats were awesome and I'll be making it a point to attend many more games...

I love the Mystics. But when the going gets tough they need to get going. They should have won that game!

  • Great Game!

by MysticsMan on 7/4/10Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The Mystics are an underrated gem in the Washington metro area. This team plays hard and has a great collection of talent that makes it easy to root for them. I wish more people supported women's professional basketball. There were far too many empty seats for a Sunday afternoon game.

  • Washington Mystics vs. New York Liberty 12 jun10

by SpanishTourist on 6/26/10Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The game was good fun, but the stadium was half empty, and the prices were quite high considering the number of seats that were free.

  • I love women's basketball.

    by Scorpio22 on 6/25/10Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I thought last night game was a really good game with some intensity, great moves and just overall good sportsmanship. The women in this league should be commended for doing an outstanding job and I respect them a lot.

Overall the game was good. .....But I think that at times the ladies need to slow down because it became a little sloopy because of miss handling of the ball.. But I did enjoy the game and will continue to support the Mystics.

The game was great! So easy to get to with the metro and everyone there was wonderful. Fun to watch great basketball with pleasant people.

  • Great game - annoying usher

    by Angie919 on 6/1/10Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

This was a great game! Unfortunately we had an usher stand beside our seats the entire game and "coach" the Mystics.

  • great day in DC

    by awade912 on 5/31/10Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

This was an enjoyable afternoon. The little dancers entertaining throughout the game, the opening credits to announce the home team, the great boys as cheerleaders at halftime, all great marketing for the team.

  • Mystics dominated!

by tttttara on 5/24/10Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

So I really enjoyed going to the Mystics home opener! Lindsey Harding totally stepped up and came to play and got the fans hype which rejuvenated the team for an impressive win over the Liberty (who have Cappie and Nicole Powell) Then to top it all off, there was free chocolate milk after the game! Loved it!

  • by MDP715 on 5/24/10Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The Mystics started off slow but, they were able to come together as a team when they needed to most.

  • Washington Mystics

by NiborN on 9/18/09Comcast Center - College ParkRating: 4 out of 5

Even though the Mystics lost the game, I was extremely pleased with the location of the playoff game.

  • Mystics bad coaching blows Game 1 of Playoffs

by mysticsfandisappointed on 9/18/09Comcast Center - College ParkRating: 3 out of 5

Why on earth the Mystics didn't have their money player on the floor (Alana Beard) for the last minute of the game is beyond me! Down by only 5 points & Alana's on the bench??? This is the Playoffs!! - if the Mystics can't win the first one at home then all is lost. Matee, Lindsey, Crystal & Marissa were the stars of this game. Crystal never gives up - she should have gotten the ball more, Matee was on fire and stoked the team up everytime she came into the game, Lindsey does it all, and Marissa - although she took some ill-advised shots, played better than she has in a while. Mo Currie should have been on the bench for the majority of the game. And coaches - you don't remove your star player in the final minutes of a playoff game if you don't have someone comparable to put in (and you didn't!) The story of this game? Bad coaching choices!!!!!

  • ACC Baby! Its awesome with a capital A!

by kshaun on 9/15/09Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

What a game! I had not been to a WNBA game in years and the Mystics versus the Dream was THE game to see! Watching all the ACC greats made it an enjoyable evening. Lindsey Harding (ACC point guard) could not miss. Eleventh year vet Chasity Melvin (ACC center) was holding down under the basket, and Monique Curry and Alana Beard (ACC guards) kept the pace of the game in 5th gear just like in college. Not to mention the Terp Duo of Marissa Coleman and Crystal Langhorne (ACC big girls) have not missed a beat since coming to the WNBA. I had a great time and look forward to next summer and Mystics basketball.
