Washington Mystics History

The Washington Mystics are a professional women's basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Since their introduction in 1998 as one of the WNBA’s first expansion franchises, the Mystics have topped the Eastern Conference twice and won the WNBA Finals in 2019. The team was led in their early seasons by multi-season rebounding champion Chamique Holdsclaw and four-time All-Star Alana Beard. The Mystics reached their first Finals in 2018 behind the play of two-time WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne. Washington returned to the Finals in 2019, winning a thrilling 3-2 series against the Connecticut Sun and delivering D.C. its first professional basketball title since 1978. Delle Donne won her second career MVP in 2019 while shooting the WNBA’s only 50-40-90 season, and teammate Natasha Cloud was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

It was a great game. A mystics player made a 3 point shot to send it into overtime. The Mystics won.

  • Go Mystics!

by FamilyManInNova on 8/21/12Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first Mystics game in over 10 years. It was awesome. I was very impressed with the speed of the game and how both teams played with a lot of intensity. The game was extremely physical. The crowd was very engaged and though there weren't as many people there as, say, for a Caps game, the atmosphere was great. The Mystics had a large lead which they lost in the fourth quarter, but hit an amazing 3-pointer to force OT. They trailed for a while in OT, but some great D and a key basket at the end gave them the win.

  • Exciting ending!!

    by Volnurse62 on 8/21/12Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I'm a big fan of women's BB. Enjoyed watching former collegiate stars perform. A plus was seeing the 15th anniversary all time Mystics team. Two former Lady Vols & two former Lady Terps, both of my favorite college teams. It doesn't get any better than that. Special treat to see 3 former Vols play, Michelle, Ashley & Shannon! And the final seconds of regulation AND an overtime, and the win! Wow, who could ask for a more exciting afternoon.

  • Team Cohesion

by Anonymous on 7/8/12Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Game was great. I didn't quite understand the wholesale swap out of Mystic players. May be the coach is trying to find some team cohesion. Or may be all the players haven't bought into the coach's system just seemed odd to me. But I'm not the coach and I don't know the player capabilities. The Mystics put a good product on the court and the team seemed to hussle up and down the court.

The seats were fantastic, three rows from the court. Verizon Center staff was helpful and friendly. Had a blast!

  • Big Disappointment After Much Anticipation

    by Lily333 on 9/6/11Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Repeating a tradition of having a group of friends and family for Fan Appreciation for the third consecutive year was quite a let down this year. Not only did the Mystics lose miserably, but also this "Fan Appreciation Day" was no where near the added fun that we enjoyed in previous years. There was no activities for the children. Absent were the characters roaming around, fan picture taking, games, music, face painting, etc. I was not only disappointed that I switch tickets and saved ticket vouchers in high anticipation for this game but also embarrassed that some family members who purchased tickets had extremely limited enjoyment. It was an especially huge let down for the children who had enjoyed the interactions in previous years.

Very nice time. We enjoyed the post game auction. Too bad the Mystics were not able to pull the game out

  • It was a good time.

Wanted to see the Mercury play and we did; and they won! Seats were excellent, but a little experience. Getting in and out of the arena was quite easy.

  • Overtime frenzy!

by kprp on 8/27/11Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The Mystics fought to the end to come back to tie the game in regulation. They had great energy. However, they missed key shots in overtime and lost the game. The game was worth the price of admission.

the staff was very friendly and helpful.timeouts had a lot of fun events.

  • So much family fun!

    by jenoi2 on 8/25/11Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

If you think you can't afford to take your family to a professional basketball game at the Verizon Center, think again! Mystics games are the way to go if you want an affordable sports night with the family. The two-for-one deal got us 6 club level, mid-court tickets for $130. Great game with fun time-out music and jumbotron entertainment. And, though it was far from crowded, you definitely get the feel of a big crowd as the minutes wind down and everyone is on their feet. Lots of families. Go Mystics!

  • Intense Baksetball/Lots of Fun

by VAUConnFan on 8/23/11Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

A very small but very enthusiastic crowd, all of whom appeared to be having a lot of fun. women's basketball is a great game; Incredible talent and a lot of intensity. There were a lot of beautiful, young women in attendance.

Enjoyed the game and opportunity to see my favorite WNBA Player rookie Maya Moore. Although the Mystics lost the game, I felt happy for my favorite player.
