Washington Mystics History

The Washington Mystics are a professional women's basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Since their introduction in 1998 as one of the WNBA’s first expansion franchises, the Mystics have topped the Eastern Conference twice and won the WNBA Finals in 2019. The team was led in their early seasons by multi-season rebounding champion Chamique Holdsclaw and four-time All-Star Alana Beard. The Mystics reached their first Finals in 2018 behind the play of two-time WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne. Washington returned to the Finals in 2019, winning a thrilling 3-2 series against the Connecticut Sun and delivering D.C. its first professional basketball title since 1978. Delle Donne won her second career MVP in 2019 while shooting the WNBA’s only 50-40-90 season, and teammate Natasha Cloud was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

  • GO MYSTICS!!

    by ImJustSayin1 on 8/27/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first WNBA game and I really enjoyed it. I'm a DC girl so I was glad to see the Mystics come out with a win.

  • Mystics were Fantastic!

I am a season ticket holder andI I brought a friend who flew in from Chicago. We both thoroughly enjoyed the game - we won of course and it was a fantastic game. The seats were amazing with a wonderful view of all of the action. We enjoyed it so much that we are attending again on Sept. 15th - we have already bought the tickets and she has already booked her flight. Mo

  • Mystics Doing Much Better

by Pegweg on 8/23/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I believe the Mystics can compete with the Mercury and Sky and Lynx now that they have this wonderful coach and great caliber of players. I can see the improvement already! My son and his girlfriend used the two tickets while we bought a third ticket that put me right up there! It was a great game!

  • WNBA is fun!

by weekendroady on 8/23/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Never been to a WNBA game and had often heard from other sports fans (who probably haven't been to a game either) about how boring it is. I had a blast at the game, though. The WNBA and the Mystics put out an entertaining product and it's very family oriented, wholesome and non-threatening (not coming from a dad myself, but I enjoyed the relaxed nature of the whole event being just a fan who has gone to many, many games across many sports and leagues). It's just pure simple entertainment and the ladies put on a great game of basketball, I was surprised how much I forgot this was the WNBA and I was just watching good hoops. It was also a treat to see Elene Delle Donne play for Chicago - she's pretty legit. All in all, a good time and I'd go back again.

The Verizon Center was a great venue. We had excellent seats and truly enjoyed the Mystic vs Chicago Sky game on Tuesday, August 20, 2013.

  • Some good hoopin

by vvvvvvvvvvvvvvv on 8/23/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

To be perfectly honest, we were in Washington, DC to see the Chicago Sky, not the Mystics. The Verizon Center is a nice arena. I am kinda old though, and while we were waiting, it would have been nice to have some place to sit down. Inside, the prices were normally high. As for the game itself... the seats were quite comfortable, and the Sky won, so it was very enjoyable!

I really enjoy the intensity and team work of the WNBA teams. Both the Mystics and Sparks worked so well together and played their hearts out. I was disappointed that Candice Parker couldn't play and that the Mystics weren't more competitive that day. But it's still a joy to see high energy, unselfish team work and players that appear to care more about their teammates and winning as a team than they do themselves. The tickets are a bargain, in my opinion. You can get prime seats for a WNBA game for around the cost of an average NBA seat.

  • Let's Go Mystics

    by 1MitchellvilleFan on 8/8/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I attend 5 - 10 games a year. The LA Sparks game was great. I was disappointed that Candace Parker was a no-show, but I've seen her several times before. She is a crowd pleaser, a sweet person and a great basketball player. My daughter loves her so much. I love the Verizon experience, although the prices at the gift shop/team store and FOOD are WAY-TOOO EXPENSIVE. Even the clearance items at the team store are overpriced. $34 for a jersey of a player traded 2 years ago???? WHAT???? This is crazy to say the least. Management needs to change this asap!!!! MORE people will buy tickets to the games, eat and shop if prices are kept affordable or should I say reasonable.

  • Candace Parker didn't play

by hueyc on 8/7/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Very disappointed that Candace Parker didn't play nd the seats were terrible for courtside seats.

  • Worth the trip

by FansfromNC on 8/7/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

We don't have a WNBA team here in NC so the Mystics are the closest team to us. What great fun it was to see them and the Verizon Center is located in such a fantastic part of the city. We enjoyed the trip, the game and our stay in DC. Even though the Mystics lost we had a great time cheering for them.

  • Loved it!

  • Game was ok

by Romack on 7/9/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

WNBA is not on par with NBA. Having said that, as a basketball fan you want to be entertained. I felt like the players did not bring the entertainment aspect to the experience. Both teams played hard and the Mystics were great in winning by over 20 pts. However, as a fan, I would like to have seen the players put on more of a show and at the very least acknowledge the crowd. How will the WNBA maintain or grow as a league when the players don't even acknowledge the crowd and the young girls who are there as fans? The attendance was so small, that it should be a part of the team's responsibility to interact on some level with the fans. After the game, Skylar Diggins and Tayler Hill were interviewed in front of fans who paid to be a part of the special rookies conversation. Skylar held her head down the entire time and seemed disinterested. No autograph signing, no pictures taken, nothing. I would go to another WNBA game, but somebody has to tell these young ladies, that to keep this league alive, you have to engage the few fans who bother to show up..

The game overall was a good experience for me and my daughter. I feel that the event staff could have been a little more nicer and professional. I also wish that they had a better set up to were you could get an autograph from the players home and away teams. I was not the only one that was confused in how to get an autograph from a player.

  • Mystics Phoenix Battle! Best Game So Far!

    by mysticsfan913 on 7/1/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Wow! What a game! The Mystics were clicking on offense and defense for almost 3 quarters of the game. Heading into the 3rd quarter the Mystics had a comfortable lead of 10 points but late in the 3rd Phoenix fought their way back when Diana hit 2 consecutive deadly trees to cut the Mystics lead to 4. The 4th quarter was the most fun because both teams shared the lead and with Phoenix ahead by 3 it came down to the last 8 or so seconds of the game. Woosh! Matee connected on a 3 pointer and was fouled on the play! 4 point play game over right! But the refs didn't see it that way. Ajavon intentionally missed the last free throw but Phoenix recovered the rebound; game over. A disappointing ending but a very intense, exciting, well played game. Go Mystics!
