Washington Mystics History

The Washington Mystics are a professional women's basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Since their introduction in 1998 as one of the WNBA’s first expansion franchises, the Mystics have topped the Eastern Conference twice and won the WNBA Finals in 2019. The team was led in their early seasons by multi-season rebounding champion Chamique Holdsclaw and four-time All-Star Alana Beard. The Mystics reached their first Finals in 2018 behind the play of two-time WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne. Washington returned to the Finals in 2019, winning a thrilling 3-2 series against the Connecticut Sun and delivering D.C. its first professional basketball title since 1978. Delle Donne won her second career MVP in 2019 while shooting the WNBA’s only 50-40-90 season, and teammate Natasha Cloud was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

  • Mystics vs Conn Sun - First live WNBA game

by Aldale on 7/1/14Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Fast paced, physical, great defense. I knew I'd enjoy seeing the familiar players play, but was surprised at how much fun the WNBA game experience was.

We enjoyed the game over all. I took my great niece and nephew to see their first WNBA game. They enjoyed the game, and the atmosphere. They enjoyed it so much, now they are looking forward to go to their next game.

This was my first WNBA experience. I had a blast. There was a lot of crowd interactions between television time outs. I just wish my little girl Could've participated in a few.

We had unbelievable seats just 3 back on the main floor and could see everything! Going to the game was a highlight for my two teenage basketball playing daughters!

  • WNBA game

by Endio on 6/2/14Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

THE MYSTICS/ LIBERTY GAME WAS RATHER BORING NOT TOO MANY FANS AND THE QUALITY OF PLAY WAS SLOPPY. I STILL ENJOYED SEEING THE LADIES PLAY. THE GAME DID HAVE IT'S GOOD MOMENTS BUT BOTH TEAMS NEED TO IMPROVE ON THE GAME.

  • Great seats!

Seats were great. You could hear what players and coaches were saying. Would have been better if the Mystics won, but overall it was a good experience.

  • Great game

    by BuffaloSoldier2 on 5/19/14Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I had great seats (section 100, R F, 1&2), the game was my first WNBA game and I was very entertained. I live in the Hampton Rd area and can only schedule for weekend games, but I already got tickets for two more game in the same general location. I plan on a couple more in addition to the ones I have. I had a great time.

  • Mystics vs Lynx

Excellent seats. Had a great fun filled evening! We could almost jump onto the court. We also met some wonderful friends that night. WNBA rocks

  • What a great night with the Washington Mystics.

by betazeta on 5/19/14Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The Washington Mystics were truely amazing! I got a seat in the VIP section behind the team which made the game even more amazing. I could hear the coach in the huddle, and the Mystics players supporting each other. This is an experience I'll never forget. I can't wait to see the next game! The only hitch was...for some reason, I was initally directed to Row C instead of CC. I didn't know that I was in row C unitl the ticketed persons in row C showed up for game after the 1st quarter. I was initally slightly disappointed in the seating assignment. But, after I moved to row CC, that was exactly what I expected

  • WNBA Future is Bright in DC

by NewFanofMystics on 9/24/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The Mystics had a tremendous season and Coach of the Year Mike T. has brought a new energy and life into the organization. Would like to see more fans in the stands, especially since this was the first playoff game in a few years. Strong team of veterans, rookies, and everyone in between.

  • Easiest sporting event ever for me.

by DelawareNana on 9/24/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Of course I was really excited to see the game, but I was thrilled with the venue & transportation to and fro. My first time at the Verizon Center in downtown DC and it was so convenient. I drove to the outlying Metro station, parked my car in the lot, and took the train into town. The destination train stop was right below the Center. All had to do was take the escalator up to the street level and the Center was right there. Additionally, the Center is surrounded by restaurants, movie theatre and other things to pleasantly while away my time because I arrived earlier than the game start time. Leaving the Center was as easy as taking the escalator down to the Metro train. No struggling to get out of a parking lot with my car. It doesn't get any more convenient or easier than this! I will definitely make this trip again.

  • Mystics Experience

    by Nootsy01 on 9/18/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

It was fun watching the ladies play. I liked the price vs what you get with the NBA and it is still high quality basketball. The ambiance in the Verizon Center was fun. There were a lot of fan fun stuff going on on the court as well.

  • Love the WNBA

by Biscotty on 9/16/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The level of play in the WNBA is so far superior to what it was even just a few years ago. The whole experience of being in a big stadium in DC makes going to a game one of my favorite things to do.

  • Mystics - Letdown

    by NLF13 on 9/14/13Verizon Center - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

I was disappointed with my visit to the Verizon center for the Mystics game vs Chicago on September 8th. My friends and I had season tickets several years ago but stopped attending because the team had no consistent management etc. and was not enjoyable to watch. This team with the new coach is enjoyable again. We thought we could just sit and enjoy the game but we have misbehaving children behind us that were not being monitored by the male adult with them. We purchased ice cream at intermission and then were asked to move out of our seats so that a short promo for women's breast cancer could be shot... . That was all great except we did not get to relax and enjoy our melting ice cream during this time... just not well run by the event organizers. Also very disappointed that the attendance which used to be highest in the WNBA is soooo low.
