Washington Mystics History

The Washington Mystics are a professional women's basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Since their introduction in 1998 as one of the WNBA’s first expansion franchises, the Mystics have topped the Eastern Conference twice and won the WNBA Finals in 2019. The team was led in their early seasons by multi-season rebounding champion Chamique Holdsclaw and four-time All-Star Alana Beard. The Mystics reached their first Finals in 2018 behind the play of two-time WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne. Washington returned to the Finals in 2019, winning a thrilling 3-2 series against the Connecticut Sun and delivering D.C. its first professional basketball title since 1978. Delle Donne won her second career MVP in 2019 while shooting the WNBA’s only 50-40-90 season, and teammate Natasha Cloud was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

Mystics Basketball starring Elena Delle Donne was an amazing event. I watched her play 3 seasons at UD, 4 with Chicago Sky and now in her second season with Washington. It is a great stadium, had great seats.

  • The game was cancelled

    by robinsky22 on 8/6/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

The Mystics game was cancelled. I found this out just before I got to the arena. It would have been nice if I was notified a couple of hours in advance. I haven't been reimbursed as of this rating.

  • Disappointed

by Tomino on 8/6/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

Unfortunately the game was canceled due to the Las Vegas Aces flight delays. The CapitalOne Arena is a dump!

  • Great time at Mystics Game

by DelawareSharon on 6/12/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great time seeing the Mystics play. They lost to the Minnesota Lynx - a tough team - but the game was a good one. The halftime entertainment was awesome - acrobatic woman on a unicycle. Very impressive.

  • Traffic was bad..didn't make it!!

    by Beautygirl53 on 6/7/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I left home in plenty time from Hampton, VA. Rain and storms and traffic prevented me from getting there in time. I heard it was a good game and I will try again,

Everything about this venue was great except the parking garage. Once you park you must leave your car window down and your keys on the front seat. I was very uncomfortable doing this. Otherwise everything was awesome!!

Came from Northern Carroll County MD. and caught Metro at Shady Grove (bus bridge a minor iinconvenience - well handled by Metro staff) Walked 2 blocks or so from Metro to Capitol One Center. Cap. One Center clean, staff professional and helpful. All-in-all, an enjoyable experience.

  • Great Game

by ToyTiya on 5/23/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I really enjoyed this game. It was great to see the Mystics get a W on their home opener. Can’t wait to see the next home game!

  • Mystics Game

by Dcdps on 5/23/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

We enjoyed our first WNBA game at Capital One Arena. The seats were great and moderately priced. The competition was fast and fierce. We especially liked watching Victoria Vivians. My only suggestion is to have more concessions as the lines were extremely long.

  • Game was good

by BIGB3314 on 5/15/18Bob Carpenter Center at University of Delaware - NewarkRating: 3 out of 5

This was my daughter's first basketball game. The stadium is good for a college atmosphere. My wife didn't like the bleacher seats (she's not a huge basketball fan anyway) but I enjoyed sitting close to the court. My daughter seemed to enjoy the experience.

Always enjoy games at the Bob Carpenter Center at the UD. Family are fans of EDD.

  • Awesome Game

I took my 14 yr old daughter to this event because she is inspired by #11 Elena Delle Donne. She plays basketball herself and she was soooooooo excited to see her. My daughter wants to attend MSU and play ball and she happened to notice from the opposite team was Victoria Vivans she is also inspired by her as well. We had great seats right behind the home team and was able to get a few good pics of the players. This was an awesome game and we will definitely be back. We are thinking of purchasing tickets for Washington games too.

  • Mystics game was very fun for the whole family

by NoVafamily on 9/4/17Capital One Arena (formerly Verizon Center) - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Two of us had never been to a Mystics game before, and now we're fans! The team boosters create a family-type atmosphere -- they really cater to the fans. Lots of fun activities during the down times, giveaways, and the game was riveting. Highly recommend for families, but saw lots of couples and groups of singles, too.

  • Great Game. Tough loss

by BlueEyedBuddha on 8/29/17Capital One Arena (formerly Verizon Center) - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Great game between two good teams. Dallas was very physical and took advantage of the refs not calling many fouls especially early. Mystics fought back to take the lead, but Dallas reclaimed it and prevailed in a close one. The emcee and mascot kept the crowd energized.

  • Fantastic Match

The Match was fantastic, unforgettable experience.

  • WNBA Experience

by Amaretta on 8/21/17Capital One Arena (formerly Verizon Center) - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time at the Arena. I loved the atmosphere. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The game was awesome and I will be back to enjoy other shows in the near future.

  • Fun

by Anonymous on 8/19/17Capital One Arena (formerly Verizon Center) - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I simply had a great time. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I thought the food was over priced, but what the heck, that's life. My family enjoyed ourselves and are planning to visit again.

  • Good for families and regular attendees, I guess.

I was attending a convention at the nearby convention center. I had spontaneously decided to attend this Mystics game while in the area. So not only did I buy a ticket, I bought a front row ticket to support the team. Never before had I felt so unwelcome at a pro basketball game. The arena staff and the other front row fans seemed to know each other, with some even hugging. On the other hand, I felt like I was getting suspicious glares from some event staff, even though I had my ticket and went through the entrance security just like everyone else. The arena was over half empty, yet I still felt unwelcome. There was a moment where there was a dance performance on the court, and I stood up and walked two steps forward to take a picture. Immediately, an event staffer got in front of me and rudely told me to get back. All I did was take two steps forward to take a picture! I was nowhere close to the basketball players! This event staffer would give big smiles and be super nice to the players and the media people, but to me it was a different story. If they don't want unfamiliar fans sitting front row, then they shouldn't make those seats available for sale. A fan who pays for front row shouldn't be made to feel like such a fish out of water. With the arena over half empty, I'd think that they'd want to promote a more inclusionary environment to grow their fanbase. I will say that some of the families sitting in the more upper sections seemed to be having a good time. And also, when I left the game early, I was greeted by a very friendly event staffer at the front door asking me if I was sure I wanted to leave. I left early, and went back to the convention, which was a far more warm and inclusionary environment that made be feel better.

  • The food was terrible

The popcorn was stale and over priced. The game was great and the players had a lot of energy
