Washington Mystics History

The Washington Mystics are a professional women's basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Since their introduction in 1998 as one of the WNBA’s first expansion franchises, the Mystics have topped the Eastern Conference twice and won the WNBA Finals in 2019. The team was led in their early seasons by multi-season rebounding champion Chamique Holdsclaw and four-time All-Star Alana Beard. The Mystics reached their first Finals in 2018 behind the play of two-time WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne. Washington returned to the Finals in 2019, winning a thrilling 3-2 series against the Connecticut Sun and delivering D.C. its first professional basketball title since 1978. Delle Donne won her second career MVP in 2019 while shooting the WNBA’s only 50-40-90 season, and teammate Natasha Cloud was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

  • GMU EagleBank is a good venue for the Mystics

by VAhacker on 9/15/18EagleBank Arena - FairfaxRating: 4 out of 5

Well, the Mystics got trounced in Game 3 of the finals, but I was thoroughly entertained. I liked so much of the DMV came out to support them, both men and women. Lots of children. Great for not only little girls but also little boys to look up to professional women athletes. I've been in EagleBank for a women's college basketball game, so things were not new to me. It's a small arena, easy to get around, seating workable, concessions limited, but you know that already. The handicap parking (temporarily handicapped) was expanded for this special game. I really appreciated that.

  • Mystics Game at EagleBank Arena

    by GMUgirl88 on 9/15/18EagleBank Arena - FairfaxRating: 5 out of 5

EagleBank Arena is a great place the watch a basketball game. The Mystics didn’t play very well in this last game. The Storm were better than the Mystics.

  • Mystics are here to win - support the team!

by HoopsAfficianado on 9/15/18EagleBank Arena - FairfaxRating: 4 out of 5

The Mystics were up against the best team in the WNBA and while they struggled to match the Seattle Storm basket for basket they never let up in their efforts. Closing to within 5 points late in the game was a real highlight. The better team won - but that's the 2018 season. Next year, the Mystics will be contenders yet again, more tempered by the experience of being in the playoffs up through the finals. They have a strong core of players who are great athletes, team players, and thirsty for victory. With a raucous large crowd at every home game in the new arena they'll be playing in, it will be a great 2019 WNBA season for Della Donne, Tolliver, Atkins, Hawkins, Cloud, Sanders, Ruffin-Pratt, Currie, Powers, and Thomas. COME OUT AND CHEER OUR TEAM TO VICTORY!

    by usmc27812 on 9/15/18EagleBank Arena - FairfaxRating: 3 out of 5

A nice venue but the traffic control getting it out was horrid. I don’t know who trained the police but they need to go back to school for traffic control school

  • Mystics was unforgettable!!!!

    by Annmarie5 on 9/15/18EagleBank Arena - FairfaxRating: 3 out of 5

The final game was amazing!!! So many fans showed and rooted for the great!!! One con - location wasn’t great. We had to drive all the way to Fairfax for the game. Was disappointed that it wasn’t at CaptialOne arena. Hoping for the mystics to have their permanent location.

  • Mystics play great basketball

    by Mamaof3girlz on 9/15/18EagleBank Arena - FairfaxRating: 4 out of 5

We took our girls to the Finals at Eagle Arena. It was so fun, the game was great, the commercial break entertainment enjoyable, and the atmosphere was loud, happy, and fun. Even though the Mystics lost, it was a great game and enjoyable evening.

  • Mystics lose in terrible Stadium

by JumpersCoke on 9/15/18EagleBank Arena - FairfaxRating: 4 out of 5

Mystics were swept this WNBA final with a disadvantage of two away games and a home game at GMU EagleBank arena. Traffic was terrible and the metro stopped running before the shuttle to Vienna/Fairfax could reach the station after the game. Empty seats closer to court—a little annoying. Looked at ticket pricing for those tickets and resale was $150+. Just an ill organized event— fans made it feel like a home game— but very little else. Regardless, Go Mystics!

  • Poorly Planned

by ItsOIg on 9/15/18EagleBank Arena - FairfaxRating: 3 out of 5

I did not enjoy the commute, the colors, or the way parking & traffic was handled for a WNBA Finals game. The mystics deserved better, they worked to hard, the dedicated fans deserve better. UMD where Tolliver played, where there colors are not the same as the opposing team, they have metro access and understand how to control traffic and get folks in and out on time would have been the better choice.

  • Great atmosphere

Sorry they lost, but great show. Half time was fantastic and music was good. Great bb, but my team lost

  • Keep Dreaming-- MYSTICS WIN!

by JumpersCoke on 9/5/18Charles E. Smith Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The Mystics basketball team is ending the playoffs with energy, teamwork, and wins! You never know who will score because their passes are quick, strategic, and rooted in end goal to put points on the board! They draw you onto the court with their game! Definitely recommend seeing them live!

  • These woman are amazing

  • Amazing game- terrible ticket distribution

    by Mysticsfan1 on 8/27/18Charles E. Smith Center - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

The only seats available for the general public were general admission in the top deck. It was outrageous seeing vast swaths of empty seats in the lower sections —including floor seats!!! Fans would have LOVED a chance to buy those better seats. Someone needs to rethink ticketing for these games - these incredible players deserve SO MUCH BETTER than having the best seats empty for playoff games.

  • Great game

    by ScubaChick1 on 8/26/18Charles E. Smith Center - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Didn’t like that the seats were first come, first serve. I would prefer being able to pick my seat.

  • Experience of a lifetime!

    by ballout1234 on 8/26/18Charles E. Smith Center - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

It was like we were right there on the court! And the players were awesome, they really put on a show.

  • Go mystics!

  • Best pro basketball game I've ever seen!

    by TennisFan2013 on 8/20/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This was a critical game for the Mystics and the Sparks. See-saw battle the whole way, with the Mystics winning with a basket at the final buzzer. Incredible game. I wish more fans supported the WNBA, the games are hard fought and high quality. They are amazing to see in person!

  • The Washington Mystics should be treated better!

by Kanqt on 8/20/18Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

The Washington Mystics deserve better! Half the concession stands were closed. The arena is under construction...they are going to have to play their playoff games st GWU. NO ONE WOULD EVEN THINK OF DOING THIS TO THE WIZARDS!
