WAR IN CONCERT:

Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

  • Tower of Power and War: AMAZING

My Sister, Brother and I sent my parents to the show as an anniversary gift!! They grew up listening to both bands and LOVED the show!! They sat in the third row and were completely amazed the entire time. They said parking was easy and the venue was nice as well. It was a nice way to start the New Year.

  • What a Rip Off! $$$

by Debsterr on 1/3/12City National Grove of Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 1 out of 5

Went to the Grove of Anaheim to see War. I purchased Tier one seats in the front. The seats were so far off to the left side of the stage that we couldn't even see the band or the movie screen above. Plus the band had added sound equipment that made it impossible to see them on stage from the side. Deffinately felt ripped off, as I paid a lot of money $ for the Tier one seating up front. We ended up standing the entire show way in the back to see the band. There was no opening act and War played from 9-11. They did all their hits, which was good, but 20-25 minites of band introduction was ridiculous! They could have played at least two more songs in that amount of time. I honestly felt that War is a good opening act for another band. They didn't seem to have enough songs to last from 9-11 (2hrs). What a Rip off.

WAR is our favorite band and we are never disappointed in their concerts - no matter where there are.

A blast from the past - this show was truly inspiring. WAR is still on top of my card and I thank them for the memories of my childhood - growing up in the San Francisco Mission. Tower of Power - what can we say. They always put their best on for friends. What is HIP!

  • Two tight bands!

by RockerSJ on 1/2/12San Jose Civic - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Over all the show was great! Both bands were really tight and sounded REALLY good. TOP was incredible. High energy and a rockn' soul review. Larry has a great voice and is a great front man. Of course the hour section...would class to this day! War sounded really good. I would have given this show 5 stars but I couldn't because of two things. 1. War did NOT do Summer 2. War went a little too far with changing things up. Ruined "Slippin' into Darkness" with all the extra odd stuff...think Lonnie was still 'trippin' on that song. Don't get me wrong I loved the show, and I'm fine with bands changing things up a bit. But this was too much. All extra time they added to Slipin' they could have done Summer. This is still a must see show.

It was like feeling 18 again! Lonnie Jordon and new band members were GREAT!

  • War and Tower of Power rocked

by srtakay1 on 1/1/12San Jose Civic - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Good venue - not too big - inconvenient restrooms. Good pairing of musical groups - both played sets that got the crowd involved. A positive experience overall

  • War & Tower of Power were awesome!

by Jimbo1960 on 1/1/12San Jose Civic - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

These guys were phenomenal! Tower of Power was particularly fantastic, with four of their original members plus the best singer that they've ever had. They were just as good now as they were when I saw them in '74 and again in '91.

  • Tower of Power & War Great Show!!

by Anonymous on 1/1/12San Jose Civic - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I took my eleven year old son with me and both bands absolutely “killed”. He commented that it sounded like a lot of music. He really enjoyed the power of Tower horn section. I have seen them many times over the years at various venues at no cost and they have always been good. However, this time I paid for seats and it was undeniably a great performance by both War and Power of Tower. The whole audience and the performers really got in the groove and partied as the year 2012 may be the end of it all. I will gladly pay to see both bands again at any time for a great show as this one was.

  • War amazing

Venue was perfect, seats were amazing, and performances were unforgettable. I would definitely go see them again!

Huge WAR fans but were surprised to find out that they were the openers! Guess it makes sense with Tower of Power being the local group, too bad we missed out on the 1st half of wars performance. Tower of Power more than made up for it though..just wish those types of things were specified on the event page. Why would you have a war logo when they are the opener? Misleading right?

Great show - I had forgotten how great both bands are!

  • What a night!

by BgKahuna on 1/1/12San Jose Civic - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

WAR was as expected. A fine tuned, rhythymically sound, funk loaded hit machine! They could headline by themselves. Thought they stretched out "Slippin' in to Darkness" way too long. Maybe cut short that song and add "Galaxy" and "Summertime" (two of my fav's). The band was tight and entertaining. TOP was on tonight! They kept it going with the numerous top 40 hits that grace their list of songs. Show me a better horn section. Congrats to TOP of over 40 years in the business and still bringing it every show. Thanks for the memories guys.

  • Our seats sucked!

by Tlee17 on 1/1/12San Jose Civic - San JoseRating: 2 out of 5

I loved the music! But our seats sucked. The seats should of never been on sale, section 302, seats 1 and 2. Only could see the lead singer part of the concert but couldn't see any other band members.

The group was good but did not play original music as i expected.

  • WAR was better than ever

by risheee on 12/31/11City National Grove of Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen WAR almost every year for about 13 years from small venues in Ventura to larger venues in LA and OC. I have to say that this concert was my most memorable and most enjoyable of them all!! They outdid themselves even with the new members and Fernando will be missed! But the new guy did great! I beleive this was the first time i was brought to tears at a concert.
