WAR IN CONCERT:
Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.
I loved the concert Sugarfoot was a blast. I had a really great time and great seats. War was amazing the songs they played brought back a lot of memories.
I came in expecting to hear only from WAR but was pleasantly treated from opening to closing. The warm up band, Together, laid it down with their old school songs that had the audience singing along. Their band and vocals was a good surprise and had me searching later for some old school tracks that I have not heard in years. Next up was Sugerfoot and the Ohio Players who I thought would not give a good show but proved me wrong. Old Sugerfoot minus the patented Afro still had his vocals and scat vocal style that continues to make him famous. They played their classic that had the audience up on their feet. As the MC said, we saved the best for last; WAR came on stage and made you remember why you go to concerts - Fifteen plus minutes sets with solo’s! Most of their biggest hits were played and the audience and I ate it up. I rank it up there with one of the best concerts that I have seen in the past two years.
ohio players ...war ..and together .....was the bomb! dope and truly amazing ...got to come back too short
The opening band was the best part of the night. They were a local band, but very entertaining! Ohio Players were pretty much Okay. War was AWFUL. We came to hear our favorite old songs like "Low-Rider", "Cisco-Kid", but each time they played a hit song, they would interrupt it right in the middle with a solo from EVERY band member, by the time they returned to the song the entire audience was bored to death! Everyone in the entire theatre was disappointed, everyone was complaining about the awful show put on by WAR. We felt especially bad because we bought 2 extra tickets, for 2 friends to join us for the concert and they were very dissapointed also. Never again! We would love to have our money refunded for this show.
Had a great time at the Venue. I felt like I was back in the 70's. Ohio Players took over the show. War was awesome but did not play "Spill the Wine". Sorry to have the night end but finished off the night in the Casino. Great place for concerts!
The concert was fantastic,! The music sounded exactly like it did when I grooved to it as a teenager B-). A must see!!!
War took me all the way back to college days. The band was tight, the harmonica player was awesome, the drummer but most of all the keyboard player who held everything together
Had a great trip back to the 70's Friday night!! The Ohio Players were as fun and funky as ever and had the crowd on their feet rockin (and bumping) to 'Sklntight' as well as others!! Stellar performances on favorites like 'Sweet Sticky Thing' were a highlight. Obviously, with such a large catalogue of music, some hits went unperformed. Would love to have heard 'Heaven Must Be Like This', but, oh well. War really took me back. The current lineup only includes one original member, but they were good. Heard songs I'd forgotten. Was pleased that they did 'Slippin Into Darkness' so early in the set, but would have preferred hearing it straight. All in all, it was a GREAT show!!
WAR is one off the BEST bands and they are going strong. From the minute they hit stage they ROCKED.
Outstanding show, brought back a lot of good old school memories. My first time at the Venue, but it won't be my last.Excellant seating saw everything that was going on the stage and all of the performers. The opening act was a band called "Together" and they could have been an act all their own, very old school with great musicians and vocals. I can't wait till the next concert.Very highly recommended.
It was good show but that Players did not do their slow songs such as Heaven Must Be Like This and their dancers should have stayed home. WAR was fantastic...City Country City nothing else needs to be said. The opening act was really good too. I would change the order of WAR and the Players. Since WAR is a laid back group, they should have been on stage first. That way, since the Players had everyone on their feet, we would have left feeling as if it was still 1974.
Outstanding show! I really enjoyed it! I used to listen to them '78 - '79 in high school and they still sound the same. If you get a chance to see them by all means go.
Edgar was amazing .....as usuall never ceases to amaze me.... keeps getting better ....war was great also Great Venue
Old rockers never die - they just keep on rockin'! God bless 'em for bringing us the same music we've loved for 40 years! My children (30 somethings) LOVED the show!
WAR still sounds good, Edgar Winter and band are also amazing talent. Nice Show
Neither War nor Edgar Winter have suffered the effects of time. The voices were still fresh, strong and the music was well executed with excellent musicians. The HOB is a terrific venue....intimate setting with great .sound system and lighting.
Both bands put on a excellent performance Staff and seat spacing front to back was nice I will definately watch for other bands that will be at San Manuel
Bad sound system. Very expensive drinks. Sears do not offer a good view.
I'm from this era so hearing this music takes me way back...especially WAR there a band I never miss when they come around I been listening an going to their concert since the 70's they are an all time favorite for our whole family! Sly Stone another favorite! It was a very good concert! Hope to see more of these Ol' Skool concerts!
very good arena..good seating..big screen if you can see stage...really good..
