WAR IN CONCERT:

Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

  • A great night of music

by firsttimeattheGreek on 6/15/12Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed this show. Average White Band, Tower of Power and War put their hearts into it and gave 'til it hurt. From the opening notes at 6:30 until the lights came on at 11 they poured it on!! Aside from two short equipment changes between bands they took advantage of every minute and played our favorites and had us on our feet until we couldn't stand any longer. Been listening to their music for forty years and this was the first time I saw them. Truly unforgettable show.

  • AWB was awesome

by WhittierCarole on 6/14/12Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

The show was great except that TOP played too much James Brown, I was there to see/hear TOP. War had too many solos which made the songs way too long before they ended the song I was getting bored with it. I would recommend the show to others but give them a warning !

  • Old school at it's best!

by Smoothlygroovin on 6/13/12Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Great show! Every band brought it! Old school at it's best! AWB funked it up, TOP was as tight as ever and War made it sweet, greasy, funky and fun!

  • war wasn't who we went to see to start but, WOW

went to see tower of power, been following them for 20 years plus. War ended the show and we were WOWed by how great of a show they put on. I like the best part that it wasn't like listening to the radio, they stirred it up so you know it was LIVE

  • Good concert

by AWBFANS on 6/13/12Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

The concert was great. The venue was great. Opted to do the dine and ride which saved a lot of hassle with parking. Could've done without all of the pot smoking though. There should be more monitoring of this. Made it difficult to enjoy the show. To top it off I was sitting next to a teenager and if I could smell it, I'm sure he could too.

  • Unforgettable!

The concert was very good we upgraded our seats to section A for a better view of the bands and it was worth it!

3 Great bands from my youth reminded me again why I love their music. I brought my son to see Tower of Power and now he UNDERSTANDS!

  • Can't believe that I just saw "WAR"

    by 6251 on 4/23/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was outstanding!! I thought that I was back in the 70s and 80s - War is the bomb!! The venue was just right for the event....

  • WAR--PRICELESS PERFORMANCE

by LTLRED on 4/23/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was perfect. A dinner style show. Good conversation, good food, and an excellent performance. I'm 46 and I treated my 57 year old brother to the concert. Growing up I remember listening to WAR and the songs they performed brought back so many good memories! At the venue they have a side room where the sell memorabilia and the band members were in there to greet the audience! my brother shook hands with the drummer and guitarist. he was stoked! I'll support this group anytime they visit the DMV.

  • War was Awesome

by HoneyFan on 4/23/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best shows I have seen. Every single musician was great individually and collectively. War rocked the Birchmere from beginning to end. I can hardly wait to see them again.

I really enjoyed the show but it was not as good as last year. Why, oh why, they did not perform " City, Country, City" or " The World is a Ghetto" is a mystery. That was the only disappointment for me. The band was excellent, but I think too much time was spent highlighting them. Good crowd, good music. I'm glad I was there.

  • War blew the roof off

  • One Great Performance

by rizbing2 on 4/18/12B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

They were really on top of their game. Great musicians at every instrument. They played all of their hits and did some great medleys.

I have enjoyed this group for many years. This show seemed like they were going through the motions. Entirely too long on the band member solos, and too much improvisation on the standards. Did not even do The World is a Ghetto as a closer.

  • War was fantabulous!

by msdelightful on 4/4/12The Venue at Horseshoe Casino - HammondRating: 4 out of 5

The opening band was really good. It was good to see Sugarfoot with the Ohio Players. I go way back with them. War took the show.

  • WAR did not disappoint !!!

  • Old School Funk Party

by BessOne on 3/28/12The Venue at Horseshoe Casino - HammondRating: 5 out of 5

The very opening act "Together", follow by "Ohio Players" and ending with "WAR" was an awesome and dymanic evening. The music was real! The horns, guitars, piano and drums outstanding. I have not heard music so good in a long time. The vocal quality of all the acts was clear, beautiful and outstanding. The show was a concert, party and good time all rolled into one.

  • Great night at the Venue!

Great times at the Venue! Seats were awesome! Together and Ohio Player's had great performances. A lil disappointed on the performance of War. Would still recommend folks to attend shows at the Venue!
