WAR IN CONCERT:
Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.
War, brought back memories and old friend out again. It just reconfirmes THE World is a Ghettoooo !!
The weather could have been better. It was misty and cool and the event was outdoors. The show itself was excellent! Plunky and Oneness were good and WAR was amazing! They performed all the crowd favorites and rain or shine, the crowd was stoked!
Very good show!!!!! Must see. They gave you the good ole days
Plunk & oneness were good, did a Chuck Brown tribute which was funky!!! War had us on our feet despite the pouring rain!!
The music was funky and fantastic, The groove was incredible!
The rain didn't stop the talent from pouring in....what an awesome show!!
The Carter Barron is still the BEST venue in DC for a music show. All three groups playing that night sounded GREAT! Although I believe there was only one original member of the group WAR onstage, the band had the songs down...every note sounded like the 1968-70's originals....loved it! And Plunky's tribute to the "Godfather" of Go-Go, Chuck Brown, was awesome.
The concert was was great. Framework, a DC group jammed and the crowd started. Plunky and Oneness from Richmond were fired up. It was hard to believe that Plunky was celebrating his 65th birthday. The audience was out of their seats dancing to the sounds. WAR did not disappoint. Lonnnie Jordan was "BADD". The sound was great.. It was a party from the start of their performance. People ignored the rain because the music was so good. The bass player was a stand-out.
Dynamite concert Love Lonnie Jordan! Plunky was great and so was Framework
WAR with its only original member Lonnie Jordan was able to encapulate the essence of music of the seventies. Every selection was done with power. Lonnie was engaging and despite the weather (light showers), it was an enjoyable event.
it rain off and on all night long , but nobody left early. Framewerk and Plunky had a great local flair for me then WAR finish it up. And for once the chicken fingers was very good.
WAR Rocked Da House Loved All The Music That Yall Performed.
The evening was threatening rain, but the opening acts came on did a good job, everyone knew the evening belonged to WAR!! WAR came on and did the damn thang! They sang all of the hits in the rain and I don't think no one left. We all were singing in the rain. Fantastic show!!!! Thanks to all the acts, and the Carter Barron for putting a grreat show together! One complaint, the Carter Barron short changed us this summer with only three shows, they have got to come better than that next summer!!! I love these events, I have been coming to these shows for thirty or more years, keep up the good work. These shows get us thru the summer.
Although it rained, WAR went through many of their songs, Lonnie Jordan is so good at engaging the audience, and they all just play say well. It is amazing how they keep their sound so crisp with as man turnovers.
War, in spite of all the personnel changes, rocked the house. Lonnie Jordan still sings great like he always has. They sang all of their hits, never a dull moment in the show. All of the musicians, especially the bass player, were true professionals!
The first local band Framework was a good opener. Plunkey was excellent to get the funk started. When War took the stage the first song started the good vibes amongst the crowd. Every song that War played the crowd sung along. Lonnie the lead singer still has a strong voice, if not stronger. They definitely took you back to the seventies. It was an excellent, excellent concert.
Haven't seen War since the 1990's. So excited to see them again. My parents came. Aunt came. BFF came. Brought my husband and my 7 and 2 year old. Two year old went to sleep but everyone else had a ball! We were on our feet, dancing and feeling the rain the entire show. Wonderful venue. Wonderful memories.
Pretty good show! All three acts "brought it" I've never experienced a bad performance with either WAR or Plunky and Oneness so my expectations were satisfied. However, I do want to give a shout out to "Framework" a local group that I think is very good. It rained but not enough to stop the fun.
All three bands were off the hook, its nice to see bands from back in the day that still got it I have seen artists from the past who just don't sound the same but all three of these groups are entertaining and still can throw it down like they did before, well worth my money.
I bought these ticket for my husband for an anniversary gift. He used to play all TOP, WAR, and AWB music in the day; he had a 7 piece jazz group in SLO. He absolutely loved the entire evening!! All the music was awesome! Something you don't really see at concerts these days is the interaction with the audience, TOP especially did that well.
