WAR was outstanding as expected. ToP started slow but picked up when they started playing more SOUL. Needed to live up to "Soul with a capital S."

About
WAR IN CONCERT:
Chicano funk icons War rolled their way to fame in the early '70s with classic hits like "Low Rider" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and they've kept fans dancing ever since with their groovy, socially conscious jams. The group's roster has changed over the years, but founding member Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has remained a constant, and his familiar voice and jazzy keyboard licks continue to drive the band's fun-loving sets. The multi-ethnic lineup he's assembled stays true to the band's message of harmony and brotherhood, and their 2014 studio debut together – the first new War album in 20 years – proved they've got the musical chemistry to carry on the band's hallowed legacy. In concert they strike up the same funky, feel-good vibe that fueled War's rise to success in the '70s, and their party-starting blend of rubbery basslines, Latin percussion, and scorching saxophone always gets ticket buyers moving their feet.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
War formed in 1969 when famed producer Jerry Goldstein brought together former Animals singer Eric Burdon and a group of Long Beach, CA funk players he discovered at a North Hollywood club. The group started performing throughout Southern California as Eric Burdon and War, and in 1970 they released their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War." Their first single "Spill the Wine" was a Top 3 hit on Billboard's Hot 100, making them stars overnight and leading to extensive touring. War was quickly hailed as one of the best live bands in the business, but Burdon left the group to pursue other projects a year later. Despite the sudden departure of their frontman, the best was yet to come for War – they dominated the R&B charts in the '70s with a string of No. 1 albums including The World is a Ghetto (1972), Deliver the Word (1973), and Why Can't We Be Friends (1975). The band remained a funk force to be reckoned with throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 2008 Burdon reunited with the group for the first time in 37 years for a one-off show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Since then founding member Lonnie Jordan has kept the music alive with a talented new lineup that made their studio debut on 2014's Evolutionary and continues to burn it up on tour.

WAR good, ToP Great
by Anonymous on 9/2/12Snoqualmie Casino-Mountain View Plaza - SnoqualmieRating: 4 out of 5WAR was a good reminiscence. Musicianship was good, but essentially a recreation of the past. Vocals were good, and the man himself is still a great performer. We would have liked new tunes, interpretations, or incorporating things that have happened in music in the meantime. ToP was not just good for remembering the old times, but brought forward their music and opened things up for their current musical talents. They were engaging, tight, and talented. Tom P did some excellent solos, but we would have liked to hear others soloing as well. As advertised, the ToP Horns were great. As unadvertised, the ToP rythym section was phenomenal. For both bands, we would have liked to see them play a greater selection of tunes, even if they needed to be shorter. Especially true of WAR. And what's with "Me & Mrs. Jones" dedicated to a couple celebrating their anniversary? Oh well, it was really good.
Singer talked too much-terrible sound
by MrsWave on 8/18/12Mountain Winery - SaratogaRating: 1 out of 5While I had great anticipation for this show, I was left dumbfounded by this show. Singer/keyboardest Lonnie Jordan (only original member) spent the evening talking about the past, drug use and anything else he wanted to talk about. I paid to hear songs not some old guy talking. He said they were playing a "hits" setlist but did not include "The Cisco Kid" or "The World is a Ghetto". What? The sound was terrible as the guitarist missed playing half a song because there was no sound from him. The rest of the band's microphones did not work. They each took a turn singing a verse on "Why Can't We Be Friends" but we didn't hear anything from them EXCEPT Lonnie. The Aveage White Band opened for them and blew WAR off the stage. Think twice before spending your money to see this over the hill group.
War Is It!
by Homette on 7/29/12Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5War was very good. Wish they had done my favorite - Baby It's Cold Outside, but hey, you can't have everything, right. Plunky and Oneness had me worried a little. He seemed to go on and on and talk too much about himself. The rain was coming and Plunky didn't let up. Several folks were like, "Plunky, enough already". If the weather had been better, it wouldn't have been so bad. Another sour point is that so many folks sitting in the "lobby" area talking and not even paying attention to the show. Really made for a bad time. It was hard to drown them out at some points. But, back to War - really put on a good show!!!!
Awesome
by Disappointed4all on 7/25/12Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5Had a great time...We partied with the two band that came on before 'War" & even during the setting up & in the rain ...Fun was had by all. One of the best show at the Carter Barron... Awesome.... :)

This show was excellent! War did an outstanding job. This was truly a five star performance. The only drawback was there was not enoughI time to do all their songs. Plunky and Oneness were good also.
War is an awesome band!
by cahlak on 7/24/12Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5War put on an amazing concert . We stayed the entire time in the pouring rain and they never missed a beat. Everytime I see them they sound better each time. I would definitely recommend this event to everyone. Great show!

It's all about WAR!!!
by Anonymous on 7/24/12Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5WAR was awesome. They took us back to the '70's....back to the basement houseparties. Their music has the same sound as it did back then. I loved this show.
WAR with Plunky and Oneness
by PERSONABLE on 7/24/12Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5The show was AWESOME, thru the rain and all. The two groups were a good warm up to WAR doing there thing, always a treat,
WAR was of course amazing after all these years.
by Born60here on 7/23/12Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5I had not seen WAR in some 20 years. The group was awsome. Andy Plunky and Oneness was one of the best bands that I have ever heard. They had the audience on their feet the whole time. They were very good. Please have them both back next year.
War was off the hook!
by Justus53 on 7/23/12Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5The concert over was one of the best I have seen at the Carter Barron in quite a while. Plunky & Oneness was very good as well as the other jazz band. Even with the rain folks were still jamming and did not leave. The venue was basically sold out!! Excellent show would go again without any hesitation.
OMG War was all that
