Not enough substance to fill the space

by Krisaree on 9/26/11Del Mar Fairgrounds - Del Mar

This was a 2 1/2 hour travel for me so I had high hopes that it be worth it however I was let down by the quantity of cars, quantity of guests, quantity of vendors, and quality of sound for the performers. The venue is a nice place, however whoever planned it did not make good use of the space. They spread the event over too much area and the place ended up feeling quite empty most of the time. For the area that they spread everything over, it also made it feel like there weren't many cars there. It is possible that cars weren't registering for the show because there were so many other car shows going on that day. I personally knew of 2 others on that same exact day. The bands that were lined up were quite reputable but due to the Arena area being so large and them only being set up on a small stage at one end, you felt as though you had almost no crown in comparison to the space. Also, the sound quality didn't seem to be clear at all. It sounded muffled and the main spotlight didn't cover the entire stage area. Lastly, when I found out you could purchase the tickets ahead of time for $30 (as opposed to the $40 at the door) I was very excited. And then the final page of my ticketmaster transaction came up. My total was almost $40. I believe it was $38 and some change. I couldn't believe it. My friend walked up to the ticket office when we got there and paid $40. If you're going to give an online purchase option, you should make sure it is going to be worth it. Or at least give a warning to your patrons of the situation that they will be facing. Overall, it seemed like a good effort had been put forth by the planners, but I do believe that there is great room for improvement. Perhaps more advertising was necessary... perhaps the planner isn't very experienced.... I'm not sure what it was. But this was definitely a flop for me and I don't plan on returning until I hear of marked improvements.

    The music was Great!

by Falcon5 on 9/26/11Del Mar Fairgrounds - Del Mar

The So Cal Hellbilly Fest this year at Del Mar was disappointing...had it not been for the great music, it would have been a complete flop! It was advertised that there would be approximately 700-800 vehicles for show at this event and I would be surprised if there were even 100! There were not very many vendors and the food available was mediocre and way overpriced! A soda was minimum $4.50 at this event! Had it not been for the bands and the music that was at the show, we would have left way before the event was even 1/2 over. We got advance tickets for $30 for the show, but friends of ours paid $40 at the door and felt ripped off! Wanda Jackson was awesome, Junior Brown and Big Sandy were fabulous! The only saving grace is that St. Jude's Hospital will benefit a little bit, because I seriously doubt after paying for their expenses, there will be much if any profit for this show. We will definately think twice before going next year if they have this event again.

This event MUST have in and out privledges in order for the price to become even close to justifiable. The only reason I am not angry is because some money went to a good cause. This concept has a potential to be amazing but vendors were still setting up an hour after it opened and it wasn't advertised enough so the ammount of people was small.

    So Cal Hellbilly was....

by Afhrsjdi on 9/26/11Del Mar Fairgrounds - Del Mar

Went with 12 friends, paid $30 for ea tix. Ever just pay $30 fir a show and not have more than 40-50 cars? The bands were great though. We were all disappointed in the fact that there wasn't a lot of cars to see. Beautiful Girls of course, vendors were okay. The bands were amazing, and the dirt field not so great. Next year, more cars, more vendors, and not on the dirt field.

    Good car show

by Amberleehoney on 9/26/11Del Mar Fairgrounds - Del Mar

Any time you pull together hot cars, dangerous dames, and killer music, it's going to be a good time! Throw in some fun shopping and all American fair food and you have yourself the hellbilly fest! The bands were great, although I would have staggered them a bit, so that one stage wasn't fighting with the other. Shopping was good, and food was fair food as per usual. PBR was sold out by 3pm.. So that was a bummer! And the said 350 cars and bikes was more like 100.. Hopefully next year will be bigger, with more cars and more vendors! I'd like San Diego to start holding their own when it comes to car shows/ music festivals!! That way I'm not driving up to OC every year to get my fix!

    Wanda Jackson and Junior Brown

by nicoled28 on 9/26/11Del Mar Fairgrounds - Del Mar

They were both amazing! By the time they played the arena wasnt as crowded so I was pretty close up front. The only down side of the whole event was the sound in the arena, it wasnt that great and was very echoey. Other then that everything was great :]

    Hellbilly Fest was great!

by Anonymous on 9/26/11Del Mar Fairgrounds - Del Mar

Fest was great, we were expecting a bigger crowd and more cars. I would recommend that the day is compacted, 12 hours was waaaay to long and not enough to do. 11-6pm is a better timeline. The shows were great- Wanda Jacksan and Junior Brown killed it.

    Great Show!

by Tele87 on 8/8/11Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

This is the second time I have seen Wanda Jackson. I saw here five years ago in a small indoor theater that seats about 300. She was great. She is 73 and this was the last stop on a 40 concert tour. It was fairly warm in the 80's and raining and she had a pick-up band. She has a little less power than she had five years ago, but her voice was still sharp, she still sounded good. I think she could still blow out some speakers and your ear drums, if she wanted to.

    Once in a lifetime show!!!

by TheNudeCupcake on 8/2/11Trocadero - Philadelphia

One of the best shows I've ever seen in my life! We traveled 8 hours from Cleveland Oh to Philadelphia Pa for this event. I would make the trip 20 more times just to see this show. Wanda Jackson is a 1950's rockabilly legend and Imelda May from Dublin Ireland is a smash! The two together wow wow wow! If these two are ever paired together again I will travel afar. The venue was amazing but their policies were something we weren't used too but I'll take it.

    Down In Cell Block #9

by SneakyFreak on 8/1/11Trocadero - Philadelphia

Wanda is still the reigning Queen of Rockabilly. Her style makes for a real fun night. Heath Haynes & The Hi-Dollars play some plain old solid Rock N Roll. Imelda May...Do I really have to say anything more?

    Love Imelda May

by StreetRod on 7/31/11Trocadero - Philadelphia

Imelda May was the reason why I attended this show. Imelda and her band are amazing. I saw her share the stage with Jeff Beck and now Wanda Jackson. I would like to see her do a full show on her own.

Geniune R & R from the Once and Future Queens

by ClydeC on 7/30/11Trocadero - Philadelphia

This is the real deal. No props, no gimmicks, no posing. Just balls out rock and roll like it used to be. The Troc was a rockin like an old time Alan Freed show on Thursday night. What can I say about Imelda May. She's beautiful, talented and fantastically entertaining. She has a wonderful chemistry with her band. Not surprising since her extremely rockin' guitar player is her husband, Darrell Highgam. Imelda should be more famous than she is, but alas she doesn't do the kind of material the kids listen to today. Wanda Jackson, understandably (she is 73 after all) didn't have the energy that Imelda had but she still put on a great show with her band of youngsters. Her stories about Elvis and the old days were a nice bonus. See this show even if you don't know about rockabilly or think you might be too young to enjoy it. Especially the 20 somethings. You might see something completely unfamiliar to you. That is, entertainers actually singing and playing real musical instruments. No autotune crap here.

    INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE!!!!

by EnochLight on 7/1/11Magic Stick - Detroit

Incredible show - still a rock'n lady! Sounded great and her band - who played the first time she was scheduled but got stuck in the airport due to weather - were incredible.

    A long wait

by Cougarmania on 5/3/11Rhythm Room - Phoenix

I arrived at 2:30 for the start of the 3:00 performance. After sitting for three hours through 2 warm-up bands, when the third band started to set up I decided to leave. I never saw Wanda Jackson,

    Wanda Jackson Ropckability Fest

    by CountryFan2011 on 5/2/11Rhythm Room - Phoenix

Too much heavy metal rockabilly to listen to for three hours, so we left before the legendary Wanda Jackson came on stage....thought actual show was to begin at 3PM!\ with Wanda on stage! We were SO disappointed!

    Wanda

by mattsher on 5/2/11Rhythm Room - Phoenix

when i bought my tickets it did not show that Wanda would not be on stage till 6:00 oc. We had to sit there for 3 hrs. The day was well worth it but we were nearly musiced out by the time 6: 00 came. The tickets should have been more specific . We could then choose to come at say 5:00. Wanda put on a great show, she still has it when it comes to her old hits.

Wanda Jackson erupts with sass and spirit!

by Rockabillyfilly on 4/3/11Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

It's hard to imagine that the diminutive, feisty Wanda Jackson will be 74 years old later this year. Her high energy performance, complemented with wit, humor, and stories of her extaordinary history, made for an unforgettable show at St, Louis' "Duck Room" on March 27. Jackson's voice was as strong as ever as she thrilled the crowd with her trademark rockabiily growls and uncomparable yodeling. She exudes more energy and charisma than performers who are decades younger.

    wanda jackson no show

by BostonBeat on 3/1/11Royale Boston - Boston

The 90 minute late start should have tipped me off, but being late was not the biggest of Jackson's disappointments. Wanda Jackson should never have attempted this show. She had no vocal capacity at all, and made excuse after excuse for her poor outing. Strained at best, she did attempt to plow through at least one set, but left us all wondering if this tour was a stretch for her in the first place. Total disappointment. Sympathies for such a legend aside, I feel taken. Bad show.
