Disappointing for Walnut Street
by PatrickLambertville on 7/7/13Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaI'm used to a better quality from Walnut Street Theatre. This production was OK, but I've seen equal or better community theatre and even high school productions of the show. There was not much diversity in the characters. What happened to the usual stereotypes? Why was Kinicke not a comedy character, yet Danny played "Alone at the Drive In" all for laughs? Isn't that backwards from the usual? Why was Sandy just as high pitched, silly, and squeaky (when speaking) as all the other girls? Shouldn't she be the serious one? Don't get me wrong, the music and dance were pretty top notch, I was just scratching my head as to what they were trying to do with this production and the casting -- not to mention that it's always a little embarrassing when 30 somethings are trying to be 16. . Meanwhile Sandy had a power house voice, but it absolutely hurt my ears -- why isn't Sandy the one with a "sweet" voice?
