    Disappointing for Walnut Street

by PatrickLambertville on 7/7/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

I'm used to a better quality from Walnut Street Theatre. This production was OK, but I've seen equal or better community theatre and even high school productions of the show. There was not much diversity in the characters. What happened to the usual stereotypes? Why was Kinicke not a comedy character, yet Danny played "Alone at the Drive In" all for laughs? Isn't that backwards from the usual? Why was Sandy just as high pitched, silly, and squeaky (when speaking) as all the other girls? Shouldn't she be the serious one? Don't get me wrong, the music and dance were pretty top notch, I was just scratching my head as to what they were trying to do with this production and the casting -- not to mention that it's always a little embarrassing when 30 somethings are trying to be 16. . Meanwhile Sandy had a power house voice, but it absolutely hurt my ears -- why isn't Sandy the one with a "sweet" voice?

the performance of "Grease" at the Walnut Street Theatre was terrific! We had season tickets for the year, and this was the best of the five shows that we saw. There was a lot of energy and good vibes from a truly outstanding cast. BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Campy!

by PhillyBroadwayfan on 6/29/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

A well-known show of this caliber needs to do its best to stick to what people have been fans of for over 40 years or do something completely different. The loe of the film is embedded in our memories and minds. Sadly, the acting and singing had a lot to be desired. The syncopation of the singing thrown in was way over the top and when they did try to mimic the acting, it was far from where it should have been. They tried to imitate and deviate at the same time and there was no good blend and balance. I left feeling disappointed. This rendition did not hit the mark at all.

    Was good but not great

by southjerseymom123 on 6/28/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

Maybe it was more the story line that was pretty trite and overshadowed the whole performance (I had forgotten it due to seeing the movie so long ago) - The singing was great! But the lack of a strong story line made the show a bit of a disappointment

Electric!! We took a bunch of Middle Schoolers to see this high-energy show and it did not disappoint. The upbeat music and choreography transcend generations.

    Worth it!

by Reenbo on 6/18/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

It was a high spirited well executed show. The actors were cast well and shared their energy with the audience. Miss Lynch was the best.

    Grease

by Petslady on 6/15/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

Was very entertaining. Some of the voices and characters were a little weak. Given some weak voices, the orchestra was too loud. But, I'm swayed by the fact that I did this show in 1981 with the Woodstock Musical Theater Company (Woodstock Opera House of the famed "Groundhog" movie). It was a wonderful show. Walnut Street's production was, overall, a very entertaining evening! I would definately recommend.

    Grease...just ok

by tripsatx on 6/14/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

The show was a lot of fun and the songs were great from the movie. Dance sequences were very good too. Was a bit disappointed in the vocals and the music sounded flat at times. Ending of the play fizzled as it seemed a bit rushed and off key.

    Grease was forgettable

by Mtness72 on 6/14/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

The present showing of Grease at the Walnut Theatre was a mockery of the original. The additional parody numbers along with the performers own actions and attempts of adding humor to their voices was at best, tolerable. There should be no mistake that this was a new take on the original Grease.
