About

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".

Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.

"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"

Throughout their career, VV has drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like Theatre of Living Arts, the Depot and Summit to capacity.

For the past 10 years, I've always made it a point to see HIM whenever they come around. Always a great show.

  • HIM IS THE BEST!

I had a great time. I bought a pass the line ticket which was very beneficial. I am short so it helped me make to the front barricade. The barricade is padded which was a first for me.

  • Great concert

  • Great set list, but bad sound

by LiveEmotions on 3/23/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

I was happy to attend the HIM concert at the Center Stage in Atlanta. The venue is relatively small, and therefore no matter which sit you have or where you stand, you can see the performers well as well as feel the energy from the stage. I loved the set list by the band with a good mix of mostly old and some new songs. I loved the lights at the show. I give 3 stars to the event, because, unfortunately, I could not hear the vocal of Ville Valo very well for some reason. The sound of the bass guitar and drums was prevailing, and the vocals and solo guitar were the background sounds while it should be the opposite. I was really disappointed to not being able to hear Ville's vocals and was only able to know what he was singing about because I knew the songs. Ville's vocals is one of the reasons why I love the band, and not being able to hear that spoiled the overall impression. Hearing the famous solo guitar riffs was also the key, but this part wasn't good either. Additionally, I was disappointed with the crowd (some drunk girls in particular) who was screaming and shrieking in excitement in the middle of the song when Ville was singing high notes or when he was singing quietly. That made my attempts to hear Ville's singing to fail completely. I wish people were not getting wasted at the concert and were able to appreciate the music, because it is assumed that the music is what they come to the concert for.

  • Never seen VIlle look so happy

by Puppytime on 3/23/14House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing, show. Great mix of old and new, everything from "For You" to "Tears on Tape." Ville actually smiled quite a few times... things must be going well for them, and they deserve it. Linde's guitar playing gets better every time I see them. This band is not one to miss. Hope they come back to the US soon.

  • It was amazing as always!

Had a phenomenal time at the venue. The show was fantastic from open to end and the staff were all very friendly at the bar etc. Definitely coming back!

  • HIM Rocks!

by EConn on 3/22/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

To be in such a small venue, HIM put on an incredible show. The lighting was fantastic, and the performance was excellent. I enjoyed the more intimate setting because I had the chance to really see the band up close. I also loved hearing all of my favorite HIM songs. They played an eclectic set, including songs from their first album all the way to the new Tears on Tape. Definitely an unforgettable night!

  • HIM knows how to rock a crowd!!!!

by Stvn0727 on 3/22/14House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

From the minute HIM took the stage he rolled from one stellar performance into another. I knew every song that was played as did the entire audience there. Ville is an amazing "front man" and has surrounded himself with some of the most adept musicians to round out a stellar performance including some amazing guitar and bass solo work to a master of keys. Anyone who appreciates and enjoys Finnish metal music would find everything to love about this show!

  • A Fan is Born

    by DraconianDevil82 on 3/22/14House of Blues - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

I went into this concert as a birthday gift for my girlfriend who loves HIM, i did not expect much, just wanted to listen to music and enjoy the night, i was pleasantly surprised at just how good HIM is live, sounds just as good if not better than the CD's and throws comedy in with Ville antics. I recommend seeing HIM to anyone who likes alternative or rock, you will become a fan.

  • HIM puts on an AMAZING show!!!

    by Channing316 on 3/22/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

There are not enough words to describe how absolutely fantastic this show was. It was literally the best night of my life. Ville, Linde, Mige, Burton, & Gas were rocking it like there's not tomorrow, and I only hope that I am lucky enough to be able to see them perform again. <3 <3 <3

  • HIM 3/18/14

    by JenniferP318 on 3/21/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

This show was absolutely awesome! Not only was HIM's opening act Anathema really good, the HIM show itself definitely blew their performance back in September at the Tabernacle out of the water! I really LOVED this venue this time, Center Stage Theatre. Then again I like the fact that HIM's venues tend to be relatively small when they do their American tours. I'd recommend people going to see their shows and I know for sure I will be going to see another when they come back to the U.S.

  • AMAZING!

by Chywowzy on 3/21/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

This has been the second concert I've ever been too and also my second HIM concert. Let me tell you, it was AMAZING! I will never forget this concert. Anathema and HIM did an amazing job and was very friendly to all of us. They sure did put a great show. I got the set list from Anathema and a Coca-Cola from HIM (pretty sure it was Ville's). I had Linde in front of me the whole time and the guitarist walking to squat right in front of me to gaze at me and smile:) It was just overall AMAZING!!!

  • HIM rocked the house!!

by krisskross on 3/21/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first concert and I'm so glad I choose this band to go see. I was already a HIM fan but I feel like I'm a bigger fan now, an a little more obsessed with the ville valo the lead singer. the concert was GA so when we got there we rushed up to the stage and got up close. The band played just about all of my favorite songs. They played the newer songs like tears on tape and then played older songs like poison girl. the opening band Anathema was good as well. I had never heard of them but after they preformed I was a fan. Not only was the band amazing the people were really cool. I met some really awsome people. I also liked the fact that centerstage was not huge because it was amazing to get so close to the stage I mean we were right there at the stage. This concert was unforgettable I will be going to another HIM concert. so be looking for me ville<3

This has been by far the best performance I've seen by them. I loved the song selection.... the lights.... and I love the center stage where there isnt a bad seat in the house.

I have seen them 4 times and they just get better every time, also great venue

  • Great Opening Band!

by AnathemaFTW on 3/21/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 1 out of 5

I can to this show specifically to see Anathema. This was their first show in Atlanta, so i was a bit disappointed that they weren't headlining--but nonetheless, i still came out to see them play. Once their set was over, our group left as we don't care for HIM.

  • First time seeing HIM and it was AWESOME

by ubiquitousjen on 3/21/14Center Stage Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

We showed up and found the parking to be easy, safe, priced right at 10 bucks and located directly underneath the venue. The staff working the front door were happy and helpful. There truly isn't a bad seat in the house, whether you choose to sit or stand in front of the stage and it's all general admission. We found a spot among the eclectic group of fans and quickly met new people and waited for the show. ANATHEMA was the opening act and I was impressed with the acoustics of the venue. The female vocalist had an intoxicating sound and the entire band performed well and had some great tunes that were easy to enjoy having never heard them before. They bring to the table a heavy melodic experience that feels deep rather than superficial. Fan girls started squeling while waiting for the one and only Ville, front man for HIM. At this point I started to lose interest. When HIM entered the stage the place went crazy and it took me thirty seconds to start realizing that the men on guitar, bass, keyboard and drums are absolutely amazing. Not to mention Ville himself really has a certain charisma and right to be in the spotlight. The bass and guitar solos were filled with high energy showmanship and to a trained ear sounded spot on. HIM has a little bit of everything for everyone and I saw just as many guys rocking out to the guitar riffs as I saw girls swooning over Ville. The drummer is AWESOME and I don't think anyone can disagree. He brought a certain genuine, happy and raw feeling to the group. The keyboard player is super talented even though he sits in the background. After the show it was the keyboard player, Janne Puurtinen aka Emmerson Burton who was humble enough to treat us to a picture with him. I asked first (always ask first) and thanked him after. That really sealed the deal and made the night special. I think my inner fan girl is still somewhere deep down inside but I'm hooked!
