In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.
"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.
Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.
"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".
Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.
"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"
Throughout their career, VV has drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like Theatre of Living Arts, the Depot and Summit to capacity.
The band was amazing. The venue was amazing. Everything about this night was unforgettable. Thanks so much center stage and HIM for an awesome show.
The show was great! The lighting effects and sound were on point. They played all the hits and ended their encore with loved and death embrace!
This was my first HIM concert. Which was long overdue considering I've been a fan for 10 or so years. The concert was amazing. Anathema was great, HIM was great. Linde tore the place apart with an 8 min. solo, Mige was being a headbanger like any good bassist, Burton was great, Gas has always had a way with drums to fill me with excitement, and Ville was as energetic as ever. Everything was so amazing. But I think me and my section were the only people yelling and cheering. Crowds at HIM concerts tend to be pretty tame. Hope HIM comes back to the area.
The show was wonderful. They sound even better in person.
Awesome! Love HIM!!!! Ville Valo is awe inspiring and leaves me breathless.
My wife and I went to the HIM concert at the House of Blues. We were very happy that HIM had asked Anathema to open for them. Anathema were fabulous. The songs were emotional, the lyrics hurt and the playing was great. Very enjoyable. HIM much less so, formula sounds and growls.
HIM put on a great show loaded with hits. Irvng Plaza was a great venue to see them because it made the show that much more intimate which HIM's style of music really evokes. To sum it up: excellent and I would totally go again.
even though im not a fan of HIM, they performed very well. sound was good. they even went on stage in a very timely manner. only had one band to play before, but that was ok; they still played a long set.
Drove 5 hours to see the show and it was so worth it! Have seen HIM multiple times and every time they exceed expectations.
HIM was Amazing! I have seen them like 7 times and they have yet to disappoint me. I would highly recommend seeing them. :)
This band is amazing! Perfect vocals, killer guitar and bass and the drums were heavy! I would see these guys again in a heart beat. They sound EVEN BETTER live!
They played all their best classics and some recent hits. Irving Plaza no bad seats so wherever you are, the sound is beauty! No complaints at all!
I liked the show but was a bit disappointed. I came to NYC all the way from VA specifically to see this concert. It was whole a lot of waiting for a short performance. I waited outside in the cold, it was supposed to start at 7 pm but they were letting us in at 7:30 and then waited at the stage, then some unknown opening band played for about an hour, then waited again and then HIM came out at 9:15 and played for about an hour. The show was over just after 10pm. A very few fans waited outside at the back door to see Ville but he left through the front door unnoticed. That's not how you treat your fans, especially when the band doesn't play often. It would be nice if he at least walked by to show some respect for fans.
I don't care for HIM and did not go for them. I feel they are mediocre pop metal. I went for Anathema who I have been into for about 10 years and they did not disappoint me. I know they are not well known here but hopefully they will make a bunch of converts on this tour and will be able to come back as a headliner in the future.
Awesome show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the house of blues
Long live Ville, he sounded amazing and the band was on point.
The show was fantastic. I'd go see them over and over again. It was a treat to hear some of their old songs.
Concert was phenomenal!!! wish they would have played more than 16 songs tho...
I really enjoyed this concert, however, I felt like it was a little short and I wish they would offer a meet and greet of the band. I have been waiting for years to meet them and get an autograph, hopefully in the near future maybe I'll get to finally have a chance to see Ville Valo in person and get his autograph and take a picture with him at a smaller venue! That is only one of the biggest dreams I have right now. :) They always put on a great show, every time I go to their concerts I'm simply in awe at how well they perform live.
The two hour intimate performance by Ville Valo and HIM seemed to be over in a flash. This was the 5th time I've seen them. Very memorable show!! Ville and the band seemed to really enjoy themselves on stage. Ville doesn't always pick up the guitar but this night he did and it showed in his vocals.
