About

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".

Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.

"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"

Throughout their career, VV has drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like Theatre of Living Arts, the Depot and Summit to capacity.

  • HIM was amazing!

by eKoJmarT on 12/15/14The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver SpringRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen HIM before, and they were good. Unfortunately early in their career whether it be acoustics or equipment, their live shows never translated before. I was weary about this show due to the fact their last couple of albums have been hit and miss, but they played basically what could be transformed into their great hits! Everything sounded amazing, just like album versions of the songs. They played for well over an hour and a half and performed their rendition of "Rebel Yell" as an encore.

  • Outstanding

Great show, great audience with a very positive vibe. The sound is excellent at the HoB and the Foundation Room access is a huge plus and well worth a little extra. The biggest surprise of all was the courtesy and attentiveness of the HoB staff. A class act all around! Motionless In White, the 2nd warm up act, really have their act together and are poised to go places. I enjoyed them almost as much as I enjoyed HIM, who are getting a bit long in the tooth (and wide at the waist ; ).

  • It was great to see him again

Him put on a great show the other night in boston at the house of blues.....the venue is great first of all and i always enjoy going there! The band sounded great...not pefect but very good, the best part was probably one of the best setlist i've seen them do ever.mostly older songs with a few fron the last few albums. The sacrament, poisen girl, fortress of tears--awesome!!!!! Gone with the sin, when love and death embrace and many more....they played close to 19 songs ending with "rebel yell"by billy idol which sounded great too! Catch them if you can on this tour and if you are a fan of the older tunes.

by MrsStackz on 5/24/14Irving Plaza - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely amazing...first time getting to see H.I.M. live after being a fan for many years. They were even better than I expected! Great set list, mostly older songs (of which I was hoping for) and a good mix of new songs. I will for sure be seeing them again the next time they come to the US. Great sound in the venue, would definitely go to other shows there.

This show was simply unforgettable. I'm so glad this was my first rock concert experience. The music was perfect, and Ville was gorgeous as expected. The staff at the venue were very responsible, and cleaned the place up nicely after the show.

  • HIM was epic and unforgettable!

by MattHIM on 3/28/14Irving Plaza Powered By Klipsch Audio - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The band sounded awesome! The stage looked sick with a huge heartagram in the background. Ville Valo sounded amazing, as did the rest of the band! The energy in the room was amplified with such intensity! I wish I could have gone to the concert on March 16th concert!!!

  • HIM was the best I've ever seen them!

by Missgator on 3/28/14House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great concert. The set list was great. The crowd was into it and I would go see them again!

  • by Anonymous on 3/27/14House of Blues New Orleans - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

The sound was a little off, which is not the band's fault but rather the fault of the HOB. Despite that, they played a varied set (both older hits and newer stuff) and kept the energy up the whole time. Seeing HIM is always worth the ticket price, they put on an amazing show.

  • HIM destroys New Orleans again!

by DasBay on 3/27/14House of Blues New Orleans - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

HIM performed after one band opener. 'Anathema' opened, which was cool, in their own way. I'm used to Dommin, CombiChrist, The 69 Eyes, & Birthday Massacre to open or close a show, so, it's just more new music for me; which was a nice transition from the standard 30 min., 30 min., 1 hr., 1 1/2 hour format.

  • H.I.M. is absolutely amazing!!

by GiovannaAgosti on 3/24/14Revolution Live - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5
