About

Vulfpeck In Concert

The Los Angeles–based collective known for wild, freeform creativity builds off a foundation of classic funk and soul à la the Meters, the Funk Brothers, and Booker T. & the M.G.'s, then incorporates mellow R&B-inflected pop of ‘70s superstars like the Bee Gees, the Doobie Brothers, and Steely Dan. Most importantly, Vulfpeck's millennial constituents — drummer/keyboardist/singer Jack Stratton, guitarist/drummer/singer Theo Katzman, bassist Joe Dart, and keyboardist Woody Goss — infuse the band's vintage touchstones with unbridled energy and mind-bending musicianship. Performances elevate their every note into a celebration of groove music in all its forms. Vulfpeck concerts are typically showcases of raw talent, dance-friendly jams, and songs to sing along to. The number of onstage band members ebbs and flows, soloing, dueting, trading instruments, bantering with one another, and inviting guests to sit in. They often stretch out to five, six, or seven musicians while unspooling exploratory flights of improvisation or digging into whip-tight, hard-hitting songs.

Vulfpeck Background

The Vulfpeck story began at the University of Michigan in the early '10s, when the four founders came together to perform as a live rhythm section for an on-campus concert. Jack Stratton, a musicologist as well as performer, modeled the band's aesthetic after the great unsung backing bands of famous recording studios, including Motown, Stax, and Muscle Shoals. After graduation the core quartet moved to L.A. as a group and worked their way into the city's creative community, bringing along collaborators such as featured vocalist Antwaun Stanley and guitarist Cory Wong. They released EPs and albums on their own Vulf Records, growing their fame entirely via killer recordings and word of mouth about their live shows (as well as one attention-grabbing stunt that gamed Spotify's accounting system). In a short time, they've gained fan bases across Europe and the U.S. — big enough that 2019 sees them playing two of America's grandest concert venues: Red Rocks in May, and Madison Square Garden in September. Young though they are, the Vulfpeck phenomenon is just getting started.

Adding to previous review: BTW, I was standing right next to the FOH console. The fill speaker at FOH was blown. Distorted mess coming out of that.

  • Terrible sound

by LaWho? on 4/8/24Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater - AustinRating: 1 out of 5

My last two visits to this venue have been supremely disappointing in the sound department. I don’t know if it’s a noise ordinance concern, or modern mix expectations, but both concerts lacked punch and energy. Kick drum and bass were loud, but it sounded like all upper mids (where the life of the music is) were scooped out in the EQ. Then whatever was left sounded unnaturally squashed by compression. It is terribly frustrating to hear a band like Vulpeck - that derives most of its excitement from the interplay between keys, guitars, hihat, and snare - rendered flat and boring from the absence of those elements. Two strikes, Stubbs. Never again.

  • One of the best concerts ever

by Tom ATX on 4/7/24Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve been to well over 100 concerts. Saw Vulfpeck at an outdoor stage in downtown Austin. First show here since 2017 in a small club. Easily one of my favorite shows. So much positive energy. Amazing musicianship. Whole crowd was into it. I’ll go see them every tour through Texas from now on!

  • Blast from the Past but in the present

by KingBlunted on 7/12/22Rating: 5 out of 5

Saw the Levitate Festival show. Never experienced a vibe like that. This group genuinely look like they love playing together. Hopefully I'll make it to another funky show of theirs!

  • Like a fine wine, gets better with time

We've seen them 3 times now over the years, and the live show just keeps getting better. 5 out of 5, 50 out of 50, 100 out of 100. Boom. Do it.

  • Amazing show

by bzy on 10/1/19Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Everything went smoothly finding my way to GA. Plenty of space in GA to watch closely or from afar. Bathrooms were clean. Drink lines didn’t take longer than 10 minutes because there were a lot of options at the Delta Skyclub.

  • Frikkin brilliant

Vulfpeck and the Fearless Flyers. What else is there to say? Best bands on the planet, and what a night to remember. Incredible show that was stacked with sing alongs, grooves, and dancing like a funky duck all night.

  • So much fun

by Fearless on 10/1/19Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Fearless flyers were deadly stripped down funk. Constant streams of 16th notes and a wicked groove. Vulfpeck was great too

  • Amazing!

Vulfpeck puts on an amazing show every time! So glad I could catch them at the Garden for the show of a lifetime. Unfortunately the sound cut out during one of the last songs which kinda sucked :(
