About

Vulfpeck In Concert

The Los Angeles–based collective known for wild, freeform creativity builds off a foundation of classic funk and soul à la the Meters, the Funk Brothers, and Booker T. & the M.G.'s, then incorporates mellow R&B-inflected pop of ‘70s superstars like the Bee Gees, the Doobie Brothers, and Steely Dan. Most importantly, Vulfpeck's millennial constituents — drummer/keyboardist/singer Jack Stratton, guitarist/drummer/singer Theo Katzman, bassist Joe Dart, and keyboardist Woody Goss — infuse the band's vintage touchstones with unbridled energy and mind-bending musicianship. Performances elevate their every note into a celebration of groove music in all its forms. Vulfpeck concerts are typically showcases of raw talent, dance-friendly jams, and songs to sing along to. The number of onstage band members ebbs and flows, soloing, dueting, trading instruments, bantering with one another, and inviting guests to sit in. They often stretch out to five, six, or seven musicians while unspooling exploratory flights of improvisation or digging into whip-tight, hard-hitting songs.

Vulfpeck Background

The Vulfpeck story began at the University of Michigan in the early '10s, when the four founders came together to perform as a live rhythm section for an on-campus concert. Jack Stratton, a musicologist as well as performer, modeled the band's aesthetic after the great unsung backing bands of famous recording studios, including Motown, Stax, and Muscle Shoals. After graduation the core quartet moved to L.A. as a group and worked their way into the city's creative community, bringing along collaborators such as featured vocalist Antwaun Stanley and guitarist Cory Wong. They released EPs and albums on their own Vulf Records, growing their fame entirely via killer recordings and word of mouth about their live shows (as well as one attention-grabbing stunt that gamed Spotify's accounting system). In a short time, they've gained fan bases across Europe and the U.S. — big enough that 2019 sees them playing two of America's grandest concert venues: Red Rocks in May, and Madison Square Garden in September. Young though they are, the Vulfpeck phenomenon is just getting started.

  • We just wished it started earlier in the evening

by Jay from CT on 9/28/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

The band was fantastic. Tight musical performances and the special guests were a pleasant surprise! We just wished it didn't start so late (it was after 8:30 PM). My wife and I had to leave MSG at 10 PM Saturday due to an early Sunday commute so we missed quite a bit of the show, unfortunately. However, we did enjoy ourselves and joined the rest of the crowd dancing at our seats. It was our first time at Madison Square Garden and we were amazed how well kept that beautiful arena is maintained and the friendliness of all the staff members.

  • Awesome

Great show and venue! Loved our seats. Vulfpeck is an amazing group that shows you what happiness is all about.

  • Great band, terrible sound system spoiled everything

by Luke on 9/22/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

The first half of the show was pretty much ruined by being all but inaudible as the bass was so high all we could hear was the bass drum. I've had better mixes at amateur shows. Got better after Bernard Purdie. But not worth flying to New York from London to hear.

MSG was great we took our kids to their first concert to see Vulfpeck and they did not disappoint. we had an overall great experience.

  • Entertaining

by Funky Boy on 9/16/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

For a great ensemble of musicians Vulfpeck didn't bring their A game for the premier stage of the nation.. It's sad because their fans are people who appreciate the school of music they play and have a keen and sharp ear. When they're rushing through the set list or when they put their mom on stage we notice! We expect better sound next time and to connect with the audience.

  • Amazing music, awful experience

by Dean Dart on 9/16/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

First things first, Vulfpeck was incredible. My wife and I had GA tickets and made our way about 15-ish rows back from the stage with plenty of time before the show started. About halfway through the show, my wife left to go to the restroom. She walked past security on her way and bought some snacks at the concessions. As she walked back to the GA area, she was stopped by security, and was told that the GA area was over capacity and no one was allowed to reenter. I don't blame the woman working security, at all. She clearly was frustrated by the policy. Nevertheless, my wife and I missed two full songs begging for her to be allowed back to our area. If she had been told she couldn't return, and still left, I would completely understand the policy. Instead, my wife was basically kicked out of her ticketed area without any warning whatsoever. Thankfully, we just snuck her past security once they were distracted dealing with the dozen or so other confused and frustrated fans. MSG — get better!

  • Short set and muddy audio in the balcony

by Disco Snail on 9/16/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

The 1 hour 55 min set was too short for the cost of this ticket. I traveled a long way to see Vulfpeck (as did many others) and I was disappointed to see that they started late and finished at 10:40pm when I know the curfew is 11pm. The sound quality could have been better in the balcony as well. I could see my section was disconnected from the experience because the audio was muddy and too low.

  • Best show ever - Vulfpeck!

by erchen on 9/16/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Vulf fans know how to show up. Everyone was on their feet the entire show. Amazing concert and will definitely be seeing them again, hopefully again at MSG. My only gripe was the ticket limit and some issues with that given some changes in my group size but those concerns were far outweighed by an amazing show. Vulfpeck is the best!

  • Immaculate Vibes

by Jerry on 7/10/24The Salt Shed Outdoors (Fairgrounds) - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Salt Shed is great. The vibes were immaculate despite the rain.

  • Couldn't ask for a better show

by Zachattack on 4/13/24Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

I had the pleasure of seeing Vulfpeck on tour the last time they were in Austin, and this show felt like an extension or a sequel to the last. They are great performers who know how to love and vibe with an audience. So many multi-talented instrumentalists cruising through an expanded library of hits. Stubbs is still a landmark spot for great outdoor concerts in the city and I'm glad I could catch them again.
