About

For five centuries, the Vienna Boys Choir has entertained millions with their exceptionally beautiful singing. With a repertoire that includes favorite classical pieces, popular and contemporary songs, as well as lively International and Austrian folk tunes, they combine both the pure, angelic voices of youth with the power and polish of seasoned professionals.
With origins that trace back to 1498 (as court singers), the choir today is a very modern and forward-facing enterprise. For their February performances, the 24-voice touring choir's new choirmaster, Johannes Kobald, premieres an original composition he's written specifically for this tour. His Kyrie eleison combines modern elements of soul and jazz with the Gregorian Mass of the World. The piece highlights both the choir's heritage and the contemporary lives and musical influences of its young members.
An evening with the Vienna Boys Choir is an opportunity to witness a living tradition that stretches back half-a-millennia--as well as an entertaining concert experience of the highest caliber for discerning listeners of all ages.

The show was outstanding. I have wanted to see them for many years, and I was not disappointed. Even my grandchildren (including teenagers) really enjoyed it all.

I have always wanted to see and hear the Vienna Boys Choir live and finally, my dream came true. It was really a marvelous, wonderful, stupendous performance in every respect.

Left early...I was expecting Christmas music but it was just random Austrian music. The boys were impressive but after the 3rd or 4th song it became very redundant and boring.

  • A bit disappointing

I've seen the Vienna Boys Choir at their home concert hall in Vienna, and have that experience to gauge my review by comparison. With four touring companies and 100 or so vocalists, the quality of performers has diminished a bit. What I found most disappointing with the touring company was the selection of music. Too many solemn and slow pieces that apparently were meant to showcase the group's talents, which it did. In Vienna, the musical selection was far more lively, entertaining and engaging. No VBC concert should be without their singing "An der schonen blauen Donau (On the Beautiful Blue Danube)", commonly referred to as the Blue Danube Waltz, and I was disappointed to not hear it in an encore. When the touring company did perform more lively pieces, such as the polkas and audience participating hand clapping, the applause was far more thunderous. Even a mediocre VBC performance is a one of a kind experience of musicality at its best. However, a simple change in selection, perhaps pieces written after the 18th century, would result in an unforgettable experience, which I had in Vienna, but not with the touring company.

There were a variety of songs. Enjoyed the Christmas songs.

I think I had different expectations as to what I was going to hear. The boys sang beautifully but the song choices were a bit odd for a Christmas concert. I guess what was missing was a bit of showmanship. The concertmaster was funny and engaging and that, for me, saved the show. But hey, what do I know? These guys have been around for 500 years!

  • Production was underwhelming...

by MBrownMBA on 11/30/10Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

I have listened to Vienna Boys Choir for YEARS and looked forward to this, however: 1) The entire choir is 100 voices, but the touring group was only 25 boys, small sound? 2) There was only a piano and 2 risors on the stage, the screen was not used at all? 3) I would have liked to hear the boys speak, only the director did the commentary? 4) For a holiday concert there should have been some decorations, there were NONE?

Music definitely in Austrian. Beautiful voices, well trained students of the classics.

  • Tremendous Voices

The boys sang with voices that were really oustanding. It was a very enjoyable concert. The conductor who also played the piano was very good also.

This was an excellent program, enjoyed by our whole family (children age 5 to 11)! The choir was amazing and the variety of music was very entertaining. Only wish there were more Christmas songs, as it was billed as "Christmas with the Vienna Boys Choir" - i would say roughly 30% was Christmas oriented.

Boys are very talented and cute. One piano just didn't do it. Background was a big nothing.

  • Not what I expected

by cwood0130 on 11/30/10Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

Although the music was quite beautiful and historic, the concert was billed as "Chrismas in Vienna". I was expecting more traditonal holiday carols to be sung. There was really no "set" to speak of, just two stages for the boys to stand on and a piano in the middle between the stages. There were no accompanying decorations or mood effects at all.

Boring. Disappointing. Not worth the time. Very poor sound. Overpriced.

  • Sparse

by Dunwoodymike on 11/30/10Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

Not sure what I was exppecting but sparse would be best to describe the event. The boys sangs well and at times amazing but with only 25 voices, ages 10-14, the sound did not bowl me over. I was on the 2nd row - I would have hated to be 20+ rows back and have to bend an ear to hear what they were singing. Glad I experienced it but proabbly would not be a do over for me.

  • Vienna Boys Choir is an experience!

Pure, harmonic bliss! It was truly an experience to be able to watch and listen to such great young talent. They were like hearing angels sing. It will be something that my entire family will never forget.

The first few songs were sung in such a high pitch that it was almost irritating, but then it got better. The clapping and footstomping was great and got us awake for the next round of songs which were beautiful. I would recommend a few more songs in English if you're going to tour the United States.

  • Amazing

I loved the discipline and talents of this group of boys. The program had variety of songs from in several languages and from many countries which kept my interest. The 12 voices songs when all the boys sing while walking around the audience, both listen to the complexity of the song structure and to the individual parts.Highly recommended!
