    Rumors Are True

    by Tarheel Ballerina on 2/5/23

I had heard rumors throughout the dance community that the Carolina Ballet had fallen from its former glory. I decided to attend their performance of Grieg to judge for myself. As a former dancer I have always enjoyed mixed rep ballets due to the variety of styles of dance that are showcased. This program demonstrated how not to execute a mixed rep. I almost left before Grieg even began because the first three pieces were so hard to sit through. This is no fault to the dancers, the choreography for Visitation and B for Ballet was so uninspired. At least the latter had unique artwork to distract me from the snooze of a performance. The one redeeming part of Metaphorical Heart is the energy that is brought to the stage. It was hard to ignore the dancers being out of sync though. It looked like the piece had been rehearsed only a few times. The principal and soloist dancers in Grieg carried the performance. They seemed to be the only ones on stage that had any idea what they were doing. The rest of the cast stumbled around on stage with confused looks on their faces. This show was the egg on the face for the Carolina Ballet. If the company keeps performing down to this level then I will most definitely not be attending again. Merde for next time, please do better for Mozart

    Average

by Stacey on 1/5/23Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Average professional performance. Music was wonderful and so was the venue. There were so many children in the show it felt like a glorified recital. The few professional dancers were expressive and well trained but the choreography was so u Kaye it almost felt like a different story.

    Outstanding

by Debra on 12/28/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I went with my daughter, husband and grands, 5 and 7. The ballet and orchestra was amazing. My grands were mesmerized. This will be a family tradition.

    We had a great time!

by UP on 12/27/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

The performers were awesome, and it was evident that they truly enjoy their craft. We took our 5 year old granddaughter, and she loved it and said that she wants to see it again next year. The orchestra sounded amazing and did an incredible job.

    Very disappointed

by Lorie on 12/27/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

The interpretation was very disappointing. There were hardly any nutcrackers. The dancing with the kids was not professional and it seemed like a kids play.

    Different

by Pink on 12/27/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

This was a very different rendition of the Nutcracker and I can’t say I liked this new version of my favorite ballet. There were many children on stage through the ballet and not as many ballet dances.

by Hannah Whitaker on 12/27/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I took my mother for the first time in 20+ years and she was so excited. Absolutely beautiful show, amazing costumes & a HUGE shout out to the male dancers who were able to jump and glide across the stage effortlessly. WOW! Thank you for making my moms birthday & Christmas so special.

    Nutcracker Ballet Delights

by Mimi on 12/27/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

We attended the Carolina Ballet production of the Nutcracker on Christmas Eve at 11:00 am at the Duke Energy Performing Arts Center. It was wonderful. Three generations of females in our family all thought it was delightful!! The location of the theater was easy to get on and off the highway. We found parking that was convenient with only a short walk to the theater. All of the performers were top notch!! We highly recommend this production.

I loved every second of the reimagined 2022 Nutcracker. The costumes were magical and the performances were top notch. I can’t wait to return next year.

Not a fan of the remake

by JEG on 12/26/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

The dancers, as usual, were fabulous. However, the updated, modern version of the traditional Nutcracker was very disappointing. It wasn't as magical as in years past, and some of our favorite scenes (Mother Ginger and others) were taken out. It took us quite some time with the new costuming to figure out which character was Clara. We have gone yearly for the past 10+ years, but have decided that next year we will try to find a traditional version to attend.

    Not. It.

by Teach on 12/26/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

It felt like a dress rehearsal. Dancers were not into it, they were not in synch, and had no chemistry. The nutcracker was written out of the second act and watched as a child figure. The costumes clashed in the waltz of the flowers and choreography was boring and even strange at times. I thought this was a professional performance. Had I known it would read like a fancy high school performance, I would never paid that much!

Not so sure about the changes to a classic

by Wendle on 12/26/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I appreciate the efforts to make the performance perhaps more culturally aware, but I prefer the old classic victorian setting, and no need to get rid of the Chinese and other sections

    Amazing Holiday Experience

by MStew on 12/26/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Great for young and the young at heart. The orchestra plays the amazing Tchaikovsky to accompany the lovely ballet. A mixture of magic, comedy and an impressive array of ballet dancers. The land of snow as well as sugar plum fairy are impressive. A must see holiday experience.

    Fantastic performance!!

by Dawn on 12/25/22Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I attended the nutcracker with my three adult daughters. The ballet was exceptional. From the back drops to the “truffles”. It was absolutely beautiful and captivating. This was our first year attending, but it most certainly will not be our last. It was a truly delightful experience.
