Rumors Are True
by Tarheel Ballerina on 2/5/23I had heard rumors throughout the dance community that the Carolina Ballet had fallen from its former glory. I decided to attend their performance of Grieg to judge for myself. As a former dancer I have always enjoyed mixed rep ballets due to the variety of styles of dance that are showcased. This program demonstrated how not to execute a mixed rep. I almost left before Grieg even began because the first three pieces were so hard to sit through. This is no fault to the dancers, the choreography for Visitation and B for Ballet was so uninspired. At least the latter had unique artwork to distract me from the snooze of a performance. The one redeeming part of Metaphorical Heart is the energy that is brought to the stage. It was hard to ignore the dancers being out of sync though. It looked like the piece had been rehearsed only a few times. The principal and soloist dancers in Grieg carried the performance. They seemed to be the only ones on stage that had any idea what they were doing. The rest of the cast stumbled around on stage with confused looks on their faces. This show was the egg on the face for the Carolina Ballet. If the company keeps performing down to this level then I will most definitely not be attending again. Merde for next time, please do better for Mozart
