About

Steve Martin & Martin Short on Tour

As two titans of comedy, Steve Martin and Martin Short have conquered film, television, and the stage in the course of their long, dazzling careers. But the live shows that grew out of both their friendship and their undeniable comedic chemistry create something special enough to stand out even among the many achievements of these two show-biz veterans.

In 2015, they worked up a show that combined both of their quirky gifts and started taking it around the country. Even more people got a share of the laughs when one show was filmed for the 2018 Netflix special An Evening You'll Forget for the Rest of Your Life, where Short and Martin joke, jab, and jibe with each other and inject a little music into the mix as well. Martin showed off his Grammy-winning banjo prowess and Short displayed his Tony-winning vocal chops.

Later that year, the pair announced a new tour: Now You See Them, Soon You Won't. It presented an evening of all-new material and reunited them with Steve's Grammy-winning bluegrass compatriots — the Steep Canyon Rangers — for a couple of hot-picking musical moments in the bargain.

Steve Martin & Martin Short Background

Steve Martin debuted his offbeat brand of stand-up comedy in the 1960s, when he first reached a wide audience via the TV shows of the Smothers Brothers and Sonny & Cher. His appearances on Saturday Night Live in the mid '70s helped him become one of the most successful stand-up comedians on the planet. His idiosyncratic, often absurdist style translated to sold-out arena shows and platinum albums.

In short order he became a film star, with movies like The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It was on the 1986 film Three Amigos that he first worked with Martin Short, who had become famous for his outrageous characters and sketch comedy mastery on SCTV and SNL earlier in the '80s.

Short went on to plenty of big films himself, and the two teamed up again in 1991's Father of the Bride as well as its 1995 sequel. Short became a Broadway star in the '90s with shows like The Goodbye Girl and Little Me, and he inhabited the classic character Jiminy Glick in the '00s for his Comedy Central series Primetime Glick. But for all the many accomplishments lining both their legacies, when Martin and Short come together for their live performances, they create an utterly unique comedic force.

    Honestly…..

by Mark Stephens on 12/5/23Meridian Hall - Toronto

Never in all my years did I ever think that two such untalented aging thespians could rise to the occasion and provide an evening of…. Entertainment? Ok. These two guys are the very best!!! I say that not because they own my home but because they are great. Just great! My spouse of 50 years and I flew to Toronto (drove fast as we couldn’t afford plane tickets after splurging on seats for this event) so that we could bask in the comedic genius’ of Martin and Short. We last saw Steve in concert in 1978 at Lake Tahoe and the wonderful memories of that boffo performance have warmed our cockles ever since. Thank you Steve and Martin and supporting team for this evening that shall forever remain in infamy. Merry Christmas!

    Two hours of pure entertainment

by SVinTO on 12/4/23Meridian Hall - Toronto

Two icons of comedy gave me two hours of delight. They could have just hurled witty insults at each other and I’d have been happy. But they did so much more. Video and still photos from their past, music from both aided by master musicians and even a lovely stage set. My only complaint is that my seats weren’t closer.

    Could not have been better

by Lifetime Fan on 12/3/23Wilfrid-Pelletier - Montreal

We luckily had purchased front row seats to two individuals who have the ability to bring the best emotions out of those even in the last row. These two are hilarious, have remarkable timing that works for two hours (!), bring forward what we all think about - our past, our present and our future, are incredibly talented, from banjo, to piano for Steve Martin, and to a fantastic voice and body movement for Martin Short, and for both, jokes interspersed with some meaningful insights of how an enduring frienship between two people can bring happiness to so many others. It was an evening I had looked forward to and one I'll never forget. Simply fantastic!

    A little too much banjo

by Ricky on 12/3/23Wilfrid-Pelletier - Montreal

There was some bright moments in the show....But all in all it was a little flat. The insulting each other part was just off. The band although good was not what we were there for The comedy was ok as a whole but nothing extravagant R

    Laughed the whole time!

    by JB on 11/12/23

We saw the show in Providence, RI. Steve and Martin were absolutely fantastic! They were quick and witty and the laughter continued throughout the night!, I didn’t want it to end! The Steel canyon Rangers were great and they brought that special touch to the show. The Venue was great as well, staff was courteous and helpful. Couldn’t ask for a better night! Thank you

    Great show, logistical mess

by MJ E on 11/3/23The Lyric - Baltimore

Steve/Martin/Short did not disappoint. Their joint and individual humor was, as always, very enjoyable. The supporting Steve Canyon Rangers Bluegrass band was great with Steve, and fantastic on their own. They really added to the entertainment. Getting into the show was a fiasco and a very frustrating start. For some unknown reason, the Lyric appeared to have never done this before. Due to either one parking garage being closed, or security inspections possibly being more involved than usual, or opening the doors only one hour prior to showtime, we were outside in a barely moving line for more than 35 minutes. The unexpected 80 degree temps in mid October in Baltimore only worsened our mood. Fortunately the start was delayed for 30 minutes, so we were seated just in time. Not sure everyone was that lucky.

    Great show...Venue Lacking

by Bobwa on 11/2/23The Lyric - Baltimore

My husband and I were 30 minutes as we passed by the Lyric to park. We were still 15 minutes early after parking in the deck and walking up to the line. We were surprised that the line hadn't moved in the 10 minutes that we were waiting to get into the park. The show was supposed to start at 3PM...the doors at the Lyric didn't open on time and the line went around the block both ways so much that they met at the back. The line didn't budge for another 20 minutes. The show started 35 minutes late. Security and ticket takers were unorganized and some were rude---not all...we got lucky in our particular line. People around called the Lyric to find out if the show was starting on time and they were missing it and the Lyric people hung up on them. More than once. Steve Martin and Martin short and their show were amazing and worth the money!

Show great - facility less than

by NJB on 11/2/23The Lyric - Baltimore

Show started 40 minutes late because The Lyric/TICKET MASTER did not post online that medium & large handbags could not be brought into the facility. After getting in line to enter, many (hundreds?) people were turned away & then had to walk blocks to return to their vehicles to store their oversized bags & then walk back to venue.

    Good but…

by Natalie on 11/2/23The Lyric - Baltimore

I naively expected to see two stand-up comedians but understand that that would be difficult for them to maintain for two hours. There was a fair amount of filler in the show. But the two performers were very good. I would have liked to have known that there was no intermission. Did I miss the email alert about the size of carry-in bag? The first I saw this info was when approaching the Lyric building and my bag was too large. All in all a good show but not great.

    No regrets

by Celeste on 11/1/23The Lyric - Baltimore

Steve Martin, Martin Short and the Steep Canyon Band were fabulous! The tickets set me back nearly a thousand bucks and they made it worth every penny! I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in what seemed like barely any time at all, but was actually a couple of hours. My sister and I wished we had gotten tickets for the following show, so we could enjoy it all over again, but we had other plans. Instead, we’re grabbing a few friends and going to see them in Vegas!

Show great, venue entry was awful

by MGS on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

The show was worth the ticket price. The venue wasn't well prepared do let people in and did not inform people about their bag policy. True it was on the website, but you had to go through a few layers and know what you were looking for to find it. The staff said they sent an email about it. I checked my email and spam didn't see anything about it
