About

Steve Martin & Martin Short on Tour

As two titans of comedy, Steve Martin and Martin Short have conquered film, television, and the stage in the course of their long, dazzling careers. But the live shows that grew out of both their friendship and their undeniable comedic chemistry create something special enough to stand out even among the many achievements of these two show-biz veterans.

In 2015, they worked up a show that combined both of their quirky gifts and started taking it around the country. Even more people got a share of the laughs when one show was filmed for the 2018 Netflix special An Evening You'll Forget for the Rest of Your Life, where Short and Martin joke, jab, and jibe with each other and inject a little music into the mix as well. Martin showed off his Grammy-winning banjo prowess and Short displayed his Tony-winning vocal chops.

Later that year, the pair announced a new tour: Now You See Them, Soon You Won't. It presented an evening of all-new material and reunited them with Steve's Grammy-winning bluegrass compatriots — the Steep Canyon Rangers — for a couple of hot-picking musical moments in the bargain.

Steve Martin & Martin Short Background

Steve Martin debuted his offbeat brand of stand-up comedy in the 1960s, when he first reached a wide audience via the TV shows of the Smothers Brothers and Sonny & Cher. His appearances on Saturday Night Live in the mid '70s helped him become one of the most successful stand-up comedians on the planet. His idiosyncratic, often absurdist style translated to sold-out arena shows and platinum albums.

In short order he became a film star, with movies like The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It was on the 1986 film Three Amigos that he first worked with Martin Short, who had become famous for his outrageous characters and sketch comedy mastery on SCTV and SNL earlier in the '80s.

Short went on to plenty of big films himself, and the two teamed up again in 1991's Father of the Bride as well as its 1995 sequel. Short became a Broadway star in the '90s with shows like The Goodbye Girl and Little Me, and he inhabited the classic character Jiminy Glick in the '00s for his Comedy Central series Primetime Glick. But for all the many accomplishments lining both their legacies, when Martin and Short come together for their live performances, they create an utterly unique comedic force.

Great Show but Horrible Lyric Venue and questionable value

by Annie on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

Steve Martin and Martin Short were awesome! The show moved at a good tempo and the musical interlude was nice, if unexpected.... Quite a few of their jokes were from their recent stand-up show but they were still great a second time. Martin Short's skit with some "nudity"was OK but I didn't really "get it". Overall the show was excellent but barely worth $250/ticket.... The Lyric was ill-equipped for a sold-out the afternoon show and it showed. At 3pm (show-time) there were still lines around the block and they moved VERY slowly. We were standing in the hot sun and it was not comfortable. We entered through a concrete hallway that seemed to be a back entrance.. Once inside there was NO ONE TO HELP FIND SEATS. I was with my special needs adult son who has vision issues and I am 66 and it was VERY hard and, frankly, unsafe, bumping around in the dark trying to find our seats. Finally, one lady came over with a phone flashlight and yelled at my son and made him trip. The exit process was equally unsafe and uncomforatble. I WILL NEVER GO TO THE LYRIC AGAIN. I admit that I am spoiled by the NYC theatres and staff but I expect a better experience for $250/ticket! Also, parking and vehicle access to the area was horrible so extra time was definitely needed. We got to Baltimore at 2pm and did not get in line until 2:50.

    Funniest Show ever!

by jojococo on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

The Martins are so very clever. They perform seamlessly together. You can tell they are true comedians with their superb comedic timing. I’m happy I had the opportunity to see them live on stage at a venue that was a perfect size. Keep on making us laugh guys!!! We need it.

    Awesome show!

by Rhenry on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

They maybe “older” but they still got it! A well crafted, written and performed show! Lots of personality and the full force of their expertise was on display!

    Spectacular Show!!

by YosephR on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

To say that this dynamic duo is a brilliant, class act is an understatement. I had an incredible time at this show. Steve & Marty are phenomenal, comedic geniuses and national treasures. If they are coming to a town near you, do yourself a huge favor and go see them! Worth every penny. They put on a fantastic show. Their roasting of each other is gold! Unlike modern comics who have to say something vulgar in order for their jokes to land, these legends are terrific as is! The 2 amigos are remarkable!! One quick thing about the venue: it was totally not okay how the long lines were stretched around the block just to enter inside when the show was supposed to start. Please smooth the entry process.

    Thoroughly Enjoyable Evening

by Actormann on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

I’m just a little bit younger than Steve Martin and Martin Short and have flowers them through their careers. Seeing A Wild and Crazy Guy and SCTV star was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. My wife and I drove from Fredericksburg VA to Baltimore to see the show and we weren’t disappointed. Both Steve and Marty were fantastic. It’s a show. It to be missed!

    A nice time

by Fan on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

I attended the show at the Lyric with my wife. We both have enjoyed “Only Murders in the Building.” The show didn’t wow us, but we laughed a few times at the disparaging jokes, Short’s amazing “nude” routine, and the quoted material of other comedians. After decades of watching Martin and Short in movies and videos of old skits, seeing them live was fun. The performance offers a lot for everyone: recordings of past performances (King Tut, Parenthood) funny insults, interactions with three members of the audience, liberal political zingers, musical performances, costume changes, visual slides on large video screens. It’s hard to believe the guys are the ages they reveal. Short in particular acts and sings with great energy.

    Great show, terrible audio

by John K on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

Of course these two masters had us rolling in our seats with their roasts, barbs, jokes and one liners. They're legends. Some of the jokes were old chestnuts if you've watched them on talk shows or such... "I've don't do impressions... because I don't NEED to."The musical portion was fine, albeit it a bit more than we were expecting. Big issue was the audio. Not sure if it was the venue or the equipment, but it was hard to make out what they were saying fairly often. Also seemed like the lighting person was either sleeping or new, because many times one/both artists were half in or half out of the light and you saw the spotlight moving pretty often to the point where it was noticeable. Totally worth every penny and loved this chance to see these two.

The show was enjoyable, however it started very late.

by Mazie on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

The show was very diverse, not just a "stand-up"comedian program.

Everything about this show from start to finish was brilliant. We had such an amazing time. I can't speak more highly of the show and the performers. Ive loved Steve Martin and Martin Short for years and to see them live was a bucket list opportunity. If you get the chance- RUN straight for the tickets. Pay what you can to be in the theater.

    Rip off

by Sucker on 10/31/23Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

Too bad their creativity was limited to coming up with a new title. Much of the show was a word-for-word repeat of their "A Night You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life"previous show which we saw and enjoyed...but didn't realize we were paying to see it again. What a let down.

    “The Martins” are Fantastic!!

by Carolyn B on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

I knew the Steve Martin & Martin Short comedy show would be great — but it was well beyond my expectations! We laughed SO HARD the entire show! Loved Steve playing the banjo with the amazing band — and Martin as human bagpipes? Soooo hilarious!! They played off of each other so we’ll!! Excellent show!!

    Too Much Bluegrass

by Evan on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

Steve and Martin were hilarious. I expected that Steve would play a tune or two on the banjo. I did NOT expect a full 20-30 minute set of bluegrass music from a bluegrass band (without Steve in it). Is there really a huge crossover between Steve Martin/Martin Short fans and... Bluegrass fans? I hate it and I was miserable the whole time, desperately to get back to the people I came to see. Otherwise, the show was amazing.

    Comedic Genius

by Lena on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

Best & most fun & original stage performance we’d seen in well, forever. Two comedic geniuses playing off each other w wit, intelligence, & charm = a performance you wish wouldn’t end. Amazing to hear Martin Short sing so astoundingly well—who knew—and to watch Steve Martin’s small but priceless facial expressions—reading his eyes is like reading a manual on classic humor. Next time we all agreed we’d get tickets for 2 performances b/c the Wit flows so continuously that you wouldn’t mind a second hearing🤣. We’d give the show 10 out of possible 5 Stars. 5/5 just wouldn’t be adequate🤔😆.

late email like next day late

by mservedio on 10/31/23The Lyric - Baltimore

I'm sure it was great, but we missed because we didn't get an email till the day after the performance about the bag policy. My wife wasn't leaving her purse in the car in downtown Baltimore. So we had to leave but you don't care you got your money.
