Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome
Each winter, San Antonio, Texas, hosts two of the premier teams in the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences in the Alamo Bowl. Since the game's inception, the Alamo Bowl has been played at the Alamodome, which opened in 1993 and has a current capacity of 64,000. Since 2010, the Alamo Bowl has pitted the second-choice Pac-12 team against the second-choice Big 12 team, leading to intriguing matchups and classic competitions.
Valero Alamo Bowl History
The first Alamo Bowl was played on December 31, 1993, when the California Golden Bears trounced the Iowa Hawkeyes, 37-3. Originally created with tie-ins to the Pac-10 conference and the Southwest Conference, a lack of eligible SWC schools in the game's inaugural season led to the entire conference's demise in 1995 and a longtime partnership with the Big Ten. The now-defunct Builders Square hardware chain was the titular sponsor of the Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, with Sylvania and MasterCard also sponsoring the game before an unsponsored 2006 bowl and Valero's current sponsorship since 2007.
There have been many memorable moments in the Alamo Bowl's history. In 2005, the Michigan Wolverines almost pulled off a miracle against Nebraska, but their eight-lateral final play was stopped at the Cornhusker 16-yard line, leading to a 32-28 Nebraska victory. In 2011, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III led Baylor to a 67-56 victory over Washington, in what remains the highest-scoring bowl game to end in regulation. The January 2016 Alamo Bowl featured a comeback for the ages when TCU overcame a 31-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Oregon in triple-overtime, 47-41. In December 2017, TCU kicked a 4th quarter field goal to squeak past Stanford, 39-37, and the 2018 contest featured No. 12 Washington State holding on against an upstart Iowa State team, beating the No. 25 Cyclones, 28-26.
The city of San Antonio was top notch and the event and Alamo dome was super!
Great matchup of teams. Good local events and venue with Riverwalk area. SannAntonio needs to invest more in the sound system and video screen in the dome.
Great venue, great entertainment, no bad seats in the house.....food could have been better.
I really enjoyed the game. I had a good view of the game from where I was sitting. There really was not a bad seat in the dome.
Great game..great atmosphere..great hospitality..great memories!
The entire experience in San Antonio was fantastic. It was very well organized and it seemed like every business related to making it a success was going above and beyond to make it a great experience. I went to the game to support my Washington Huskies but I may go next year just for the fun.
Getting there was easy, getting out was slow.....But the game was worth it.
One of the best offensive games I have ever seen, the whole experience was great , just wish Alamo Dome would upgrade their PA system.
Great record breaking game. RG3 was great and the match up was phenomenal.
Seats were good. Staff was friendly and great. Concessions were decent. Sound system was very difficult to understand. Video screens were pretty small.
Great event. Had a lot of fun. Very well organized
Great game if you like offensive battles. Would have rated it 5 stars if the Huskies had won.
123 total points, 67 points by the winning team, and RG3! Winning combination. Great venue and electric crowd. About the only thing that disappointed me was the referee crew from the ACC. This crew either missed calls or appeared to make them up as they went along. This was the only black spot on an otherwise stellar job by the Alamobowl committee.
An amazing show of offensive prowess from both Baylor University Bears and the Washington Huskies! RGIII was exciting to watch but clearly is complemented with talented backs and receivers. Many records were set at this year's Alamo Bowl and it was great to be part of essentially a sell out crowd to see it.
Are you kidding? Heisman trophy winner? 1400 yards of offense? 123 total points? NCAA record (67 by Baylor)? This had to be the best bowl game ever.
The crowd was spirited, the game was exciting. Overall an amazing time.
Game experience was excellent, but the facility has severe acessibility problems, especially after events. I would have to point out the post-game gridlock in any recommendation to a friend.
Shiner beer garden was most excellent. The only negative was the width of the seats made it cramped. Exciting game made it worth it.
Seats were great for the endzone. Nobody in front of us. Behind a rail.
Sight-lines are good, but acoustics are not. Concessions stands were plentiful, but some common foods are not available at all. I had to walk halfway around the stadium to find the stands that served pretzels and Shiner. Then the concession line was extremely long, while I passed several concession stands that were almost empty. I would recommend this event overall, but there are a few details that could be improved.
