Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome

Each winter, San Antonio, Texas, hosts two of the premier teams in the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences in the Alamo Bowl. Since the game's inception, the Alamo Bowl has been played at the Alamodome, which opened in 1993 and has a current capacity of 64,000. Since 2010, the Alamo Bowl has pitted the second-choice Pac-12 team against the second-choice Big 12 team, leading to intriguing matchups and classic competitions.

Valero Alamo Bowl History

The first Alamo Bowl was played on December 31, 1993, when the California Golden Bears trounced the Iowa Hawkeyes, 37-3. Originally created with tie-ins to the Pac-10 conference and the Southwest Conference, a lack of eligible SWC schools in the game's inaugural season led to the entire conference's demise in 1995 and a longtime partnership with the Big Ten. The now-defunct Builders Square hardware chain was the titular sponsor of the Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, with Sylvania and MasterCard also sponsoring the game before an unsponsored 2006 bowl and Valero's current sponsorship since 2007.

There have been many memorable moments in the Alamo Bowl's history. In 2005, the Michigan Wolverines almost pulled off a miracle against Nebraska, but their eight-lateral final play was stopped at the Cornhusker 16-yard line, leading to a 32-28 Nebraska victory. In 2011, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III led Baylor to a 67-56 victory over Washington, in what remains the highest-scoring bowl game to end in regulation. The January 2016 Alamo Bowl featured a comeback for the ages when TCU overcame a 31-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Oregon in triple-overtime, 47-41. In December 2017, TCU kicked a 4th quarter field goal to squeak past Stanford, 39-37, and the 2018 contest featured No. 12 Washington State holding on against an upstart Iowa State team, beating the No. 25 Cyclones, 28-26.

  • Baylor wins!

We were 5th row down from the very top on the 15th yard line, but could still see everything well. Temperature was great, esp. since the last bowl game we went to was outside in the freezing rain! Love the seats instead of benches.

What a great time! (Of course, it did not hurt that our team won either!) However, the pluses...great location, it was an easy walk from our hotel, took little time, and made fighting traffic a non-issue. Then they opened the gates at 6 p.m. for the 8 p.m. game. That made getting in easy as well. The view from most anywhere in the Alamodome is great! And we were in the upper deck. Only downer was there could be better food at this event. That would make it perfect!

UW-BU game was amazing. Packed crowd, good music beforehand, good concession stand choices.

  • Good venue for a football game

    by rtk1 on 12/31/11Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

We had seat on the thirty five yard line but up in the third tier. We could see the whole field and while the second tier would be the best seats I can't complain about these seats for the price ($70). We would certainly return if there were teams we had an interest in. I would definitely try for second level seats. We did see several people who struggled to make it up the stairs to the third level so if you have a physical problem you may want to avoid the upper levels.

  • It was quite an offensive evening

    by srs1968 on 12/31/11Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The opening was fantastic and sent a bit of a chill up my spine and put a little extra water in my eyes. The unfolding of the flag was a real gas. And I appreciated the service men and women doing it. The football game was quite an offensive showing and could not have been more exciting. The venue is made for football we sat in 324, third row and had wow seats for watching a football game in detail, line play, blocking, coverages, etc. Perfect place for a football fan to sit. Overall amazing as above.

  • No long lines!!

    by Ace2O13 on 12/31/11Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

At most places the lines are soooo looong, but here, the longest line I stood in was a 10 min concession line!! You should definitely go here if you have impatient people with you!

  • Scoring was a record Breaker

    by Mountain41 on 12/31/11Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

It was fun to be a part of the Valero Alamo Bowl with my alma mater playing--Baylor. We have the Heisman Trophy Winner, Robert Griffin, III this year and that makes it a VERY special year! We attended with my daughter, also a Baylor Alumnae, and her family, plus we saw lots of people from our town at the game because San Antonio is close to our town.

  • Incredible Game in an awesome atmosphere!

by alphamidland on 12/31/11Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

This was my third Alamo Bowl and it was near perfect. This will also go down as one of the most pleasurable and stress-free large events I've ever attended. I commend the Alamodome, Alamo Bowl Organizers and the great City of San Antonio for making this such a great event. The communication and ability to get information was outstanding. The only thing we thought was an issue was the sound system in the Alamodome. It was very tough to understand just about anything that was said because of the echo and angle of the speakers.

  • 67-56

by SicEmSanAntonio on 12/31/11Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Having lived in Texas for 40+ years and been to San Antonio once before I had never visited downtown. The entire setting for a bowl game was awesome. The river was beautiful, the food excellent, the weather was perfect and the drinks were flowing. A great experience.

  • A game to remember!

    by DanielaB123 on 12/31/11Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Wow, what a game! It was an unforgettable experience to watch an offensive blowout between two top-notch QBs at a nationally televised bowl game. RGIII certainly lived up to his well-deserved Heisman award. The venue was good (except for parking) and the seats were terrific. It was good to see Baylor with 10 wins this season. Sic'em Bears!

  • Unbelievable game!

Record setting in so many ways! The game went way beyond what everyone expected!

  • Alamo Bowl

by Hosebee on 12/31/11Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Great game. Great Venue, great city. Parking was difficult and not offered at time of ticket purchase. Alamo bowl did warn us about that in advance, so they did their part. I would suggest opening more lots, especially business ones that are close. With the event at 8:00, they could have opened them at 6:00 without an issue. Also, not enough handicapped places. 54 for a stadium that had 65,000 + fans has got to be illegal....

Alamo bowl was great. Had a great time. Acoustics in the building were horrible though.

The seats were great even though we were in the upper deck. The view of the field and play was excellent.
