Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome

Each winter, San Antonio, Texas, hosts two of the premier teams in the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences in the Alamo Bowl. Since the game's inception, the Alamo Bowl has been played at the Alamodome, which opened in 1993 and has a current capacity of 64,000. Since 2010, the Alamo Bowl has pitted the second-choice Pac-12 team against the second-choice Big 12 team, leading to intriguing matchups and classic competitions.

Valero Alamo Bowl History

The first Alamo Bowl was played on December 31, 1993, when the California Golden Bears trounced the Iowa Hawkeyes, 37-3. Originally created with tie-ins to the Pac-10 conference and the Southwest Conference, a lack of eligible SWC schools in the game's inaugural season led to the entire conference's demise in 1995 and a longtime partnership with the Big Ten. The now-defunct Builders Square hardware chain was the titular sponsor of the Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, with Sylvania and MasterCard also sponsoring the game before an unsponsored 2006 bowl and Valero's current sponsorship since 2007.

There have been many memorable moments in the Alamo Bowl's history. In 2005, the Michigan Wolverines almost pulled off a miracle against Nebraska, but their eight-lateral final play was stopped at the Cornhusker 16-yard line, leading to a 32-28 Nebraska victory. In 2011, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III led Baylor to a 67-56 victory over Washington, in what remains the highest-scoring bowl game to end in regulation. The January 2016 Alamo Bowl featured a comeback for the ages when TCU overcame a 31-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Oregon in triple-overtime, 47-41. In December 2017, TCU kicked a 4th quarter field goal to squeak past Stanford, 39-37, and the 2018 contest featured No. 12 Washington State holding on against an upstart Iowa State team, beating the No. 25 Cyclones, 28-26.

    No long lines!!

    by Ace2O13 on 12/31/11Alamodome - San Antonio

At most places the lines are soooo looong, but here, the longest line I stood in was a 10 min concession line!! You should definitely go here if you have impatient people with you!

    Scoring was a record Breaker

    by Mountain41 on 12/31/11Alamodome - San Antonio

It was fun to be a part of the Valero Alamo Bowl with my alma mater playing--Baylor. We have the Heisman Trophy Winner, Robert Griffin, III this year and that makes it a VERY special year! We attended with my daughter, also a Baylor Alumnae, and her family, plus we saw lots of people from our town at the game because San Antonio is close to our town.

Incredible Game in an awesome atmosphere!

by alphamidland on 12/31/11Alamodome - San Antonio

This was my third Alamo Bowl and it was near perfect. This will also go down as one of the most pleasurable and stress-free large events I've ever attended. I commend the Alamodome, Alamo Bowl Organizers and the great City of San Antonio for making this such a great event. The communication and ability to get information was outstanding. The only thing we thought was an issue was the sound system in the Alamodome. It was very tough to understand just about anything that was said because of the echo and angle of the speakers.

by SicEmSanAntonio on 12/31/11Alamodome - San Antonio

Having lived in Texas for 40+ years and been to San Antonio once before I had never visited downtown. The entire setting for a bowl game was awesome. The river was beautiful, the food excellent, the weather was perfect and the drinks were flowing. A great experience.

    A game to remember!

    by DanielaB123 on 12/31/11Alamodome - San Antonio

Wow, what a game! It was an unforgettable experience to watch an offensive blowout between two top-notch QBs at a nationally televised bowl game. RGIII certainly lived up to his well-deserved Heisman award. The venue was good (except for parking) and the seats were terrific. It was good to see Baylor with 10 wins this season. Sic'em Bears!

    Alamo Bowl

by Hosebee on 12/31/11Alamodome - San Antonio

Great game. Great Venue, great city. Parking was difficult and not offered at time of ticket purchase. Alamo bowl did warn us about that in advance, so they did their part. I would suggest opening more lots, especially business ones that are close. With the event at 8:00, they could have opened them at 6:00 without an issue. Also, not enough handicapped places. 54 for a stadium that had 65,000 + fans has got to be illegal....

So excited for this year's VAB!

by Anonymous on 9/16/11The Alamodome - San Antonio

I've never been to a Valero Alamo Bowl game, but I am going this year and I can't wait! I attended both UTSA games so far and the Alamodome and San Antonio are great venues for football. The Alamodome has added a lot of cool aspects like the Montana Street Ice House and the Bottom's Up beer stand. I know a lot of people that have attended Valero Alamo Bowls in the past and I've never heard a bad thing. If the Big 12/Pac-12 rankings stay somewhat the way they are now the 2011 Valero Alamo Bowl is going to have a great matchup with an extremely exciting game!

    Alamo Bowl was weak..

by JeffDallas on 1/3/11Alamodome - San Antonio

I was disappointed and frustrated - but mostly because my team lost. Had Arizona won - it would have helped for sure... But just starting with the matchup, it seemed odd to pair a 10-2 team with a 7-5 team. UA is more talented than it's record shows, but the reality is we were not playing well, and it showed in this bowl game. I think the pairing scared off a lot of potential fans, many I'm sure assumed it wouldn't be competitive. They were right. Next, the whole scene surrounding the game was docile, quiet, and odd. The Riverwalk?? Someone needs to meet with the Chamber of Commerce, or whoever runs that area from a marketing standpoint. It was like the complete opposite of New Orleans. No music?? Anywhere you went? It was bizarre. It was packed -- yet silent, like people milling in and out of a quiet theatre.. The events around the stadium were ok, but really lacked pageantry, and a collegiate atmosphere. We were pretty let down by how boring it all was.

    Okay, but missing something

by Gruntosaurus on 12/31/10Alamodome - San Antonio

This was our first bowl game, and in most regards it was an enjoyable experience -- nice setting in a pleasant city with attractions in walking distance, affordable tickets, good view angles despite sitting high in the nosebleed section, etc. However, it was missing one important component: a sense of rivalry. A good three quarters of the spectators were Oklahoma State fans, and the Arizona presence was all but lacking. This largely negated the sense of excitement from two teams and their backers coming into contact. It was almost as if OSU was playing an exhibition game rather than a post-season bowl. This was hardly OSU's fault, but the organizers should try to set up a matchup that will draw fans from both teams, not just one. (Disclaimer: we weren't fans of either team, just interested in seeing a bowl game; OSU fans might not see things the same way.)
