Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome
Each winter, San Antonio, Texas, hosts two of the premier teams in the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences in the Alamo Bowl. Since the game's inception, the Alamo Bowl has been played at the Alamodome, which opened in 1993 and has a current capacity of 64,000. Since 2010, the Alamo Bowl has pitted the second-choice Pac-12 team against the second-choice Big 12 team, leading to intriguing matchups and classic competitions.
Valero Alamo Bowl History
The first Alamo Bowl was played on December 31, 1993, when the California Golden Bears trounced the Iowa Hawkeyes, 37-3. Originally created with tie-ins to the Pac-10 conference and the Southwest Conference, a lack of eligible SWC schools in the game's inaugural season led to the entire conference's demise in 1995 and a longtime partnership with the Big Ten. The now-defunct Builders Square hardware chain was the titular sponsor of the Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, with Sylvania and MasterCard also sponsoring the game before an unsponsored 2006 bowl and Valero's current sponsorship since 2007.
There have been many memorable moments in the Alamo Bowl's history. In 2005, the Michigan Wolverines almost pulled off a miracle against Nebraska, but their eight-lateral final play was stopped at the Cornhusker 16-yard line, leading to a 32-28 Nebraska victory. In 2011, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III led Baylor to a 67-56 victory over Washington, in what remains the highest-scoring bowl game to end in regulation. The January 2016 Alamo Bowl featured a comeback for the ages when TCU overcame a 31-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Oregon in triple-overtime, 47-41. In December 2017, TCU kicked a 4th quarter field goal to squeak past Stanford, 39-37, and the 2018 contest featured No. 12 Washington State holding on against an upstart Iowa State team, beating the No. 25 Cyclones, 28-26.
Great game. Ticketmaster made up for some problems with the ticket order with better seats. Great stadium.
Next year please bring in two teams that will play a little Defense.
Well done. Only problem- the scoreboard font could be larger. Sometimes the information on board was hard to read.
Not a bad bowl experience. The bowl venue is easy to access. The seats had a great view for the price.
Overall a good experience. Parking was horrible. Sound system needs upgrading in a huge way. Alamo bowl needs to make winning a more spectaular event......i.e. Rose Bowl.
great- time none stop action TD , TD Baylor win,( need more parking)
Great game, great crowd, go RG III what an exciting game!!!
Most amazing offensive football game I have ever seen.
The game was awesome! The seats were good. I wouldn't say they were excellent but, definitely worth it to see the game. The Large TV screen is diagnal across the stadium and there are some things like large speakers hanging in the way making it a little hard to see everything on the big screen. Which you don't really need to watch since the view is good. I give a three star rating for these seats (sec 316 R22). The view of the game was great. Sat right around the 5-15 yard line. Be prepared to walk up many many stairs. Get your concessions before going to your seat. On the other hand... drink your drinks before you get to your seats! There are no cup holders and no arm rests!! Making it very easy for the large person next to you to overflow into your seat leaving you with a sliver of a seat! So be prepared to get cozy with your neighbors.
Q: How do you score 56 points and still lose the football game? A: Play Baylor and Heisman Trophy winner RG3!!!
Excellent Venue, Perfect City, Location-Location-Location. We parked at the hotel and walked to all the activities. No need to pay or hasle with parking at the stadium. We thoughly enjoyed the Riverwalk, Mall, shops and food. The Fan Zone was packed as expected and entertaining. I feel the Alamodome is perfect as there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Consider the cost of the tickets and this is very doable on a budget. The Game--WOW--Washington came to play; and Baylor showed the true definition of persistance and determination. My thatnks to the Baylor Football program as they have shown tremendous Spirit, Character, Class and Athletisism (all this while winning the HeIIIsman and a 10-3 record.) The letdown: NO PRAYER, Let the Audience Sing the National Athem, and the celebration at the end of the game. Seemed ill-timed and not up to par with the overall experince.
Only one problem: no VIA service from Randolph Park and Ride. In the past, there has always been service from there. The lady from VIA said they didnt have it this year because Alamo Bowl did not request it. I was angry because we went over there fully expecting there to be service so we had to then drive all the way to Wonderland and were later arriving at Alamo Bowl.
The park n ride system stopped shuttling people to the Alamodome at 8:00pm. It needs to be extended to AT THE LEAST 15 minutes after kickoff.
Exciting game, although would have liked to have seen a little more defense.
Public transportation good concessions terrible Stadium acoustics unintelligible Seating good
The game was great. I enjoyed seeing RG111 in person again.
Best game ever been to. Great venue, amazing seats. Easy to get to and from event.
Baylor game was amazing! Overall experience was great. Loved the fan zone!! Great family event.
It was an exciting game in a comfortable venue with good views of the playing field all around. The crowd was loud and passionate about their teams, yet respectful of one another. Hosts were friendly and helpful. Great holiday spirit and fun. I would rate it higher if it weren't for a big negative. The cash only concession stands is backwards, inconvenient and inefficient, made even more irritating by long lines at ATMs that soon were drained of all cash. We would have spent more on expensive concession items if we had the money, but without being able to pay by credit card, we couldn't. A suggestion: establish two types of concession stands or lines at booths; one for cash and one for credit cards. C'mon, who carries that much cash these days! With 21st Century technology throughout the Dome, why are concessions stuck in the 19th Century.
Unbelievable offenses, unparalleled action, Heisman winner, all rolled into one unforgettable event!
