Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome
Each winter, San Antonio, Texas, hosts two of the premier teams in the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences in the Alamo Bowl. Since the game's inception, the Alamo Bowl has been played at the Alamodome, which opened in 1993 and has a current capacity of 64,000. Since 2010, the Alamo Bowl has pitted the second-choice Pac-12 team against the second-choice Big 12 team, leading to intriguing matchups and classic competitions.
Valero Alamo Bowl History
The first Alamo Bowl was played on December 31, 1993, when the California Golden Bears trounced the Iowa Hawkeyes, 37-3. Originally created with tie-ins to the Pac-10 conference and the Southwest Conference, a lack of eligible SWC schools in the game's inaugural season led to the entire conference's demise in 1995 and a longtime partnership with the Big Ten. The now-defunct Builders Square hardware chain was the titular sponsor of the Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, with Sylvania and MasterCard also sponsoring the game before an unsponsored 2006 bowl and Valero's current sponsorship since 2007.
There have been many memorable moments in the Alamo Bowl's history. In 2005, the Michigan Wolverines almost pulled off a miracle against Nebraska, but their eight-lateral final play was stopped at the Cornhusker 16-yard line, leading to a 32-28 Nebraska victory. In 2011, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III led Baylor to a 67-56 victory over Washington, in what remains the highest-scoring bowl game to end in regulation. The January 2016 Alamo Bowl featured a comeback for the ages when TCU overcame a 31-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Oregon in triple-overtime, 47-41. In December 2017, TCU kicked a 4th quarter field goal to squeak past Stanford, 39-37, and the 2018 contest featured No. 12 Washington State holding on against an upstart Iowa State team, beating the No. 25 Cyclones, 28-26.
Had a great time at the Alamodome. The seats were terrific.
A college bowl game between two big name schools is always fun. The one negative that I have about the bowl was the venue. The Alamodome is out-dated. From it's seating to it's audio/visual.
Game was fun, too bad Texas did not show up. The year before was great when they came from behind to win!
The city needs to work on traffic flow. I have been to many bowl games by far the worst traffic of an game I have been to.
Took my four college aged children to the game between Texas and Oregon. The atmosphere was awesome and we enjoyed our first ever college football game. San Antonio is a great city and it was worth our time and money.
Overall experience was amazing! My son and his girlfriend had a great time! They loved their view.
From top to bottom this was a great experience. I have never been to a bowl game so was a little unsure about what to expect when taking my 14 year old. The fans from both teams were very cool. Not ugly at all. But I have to say my favorite thing was the communication from the Alamo Bowl after purchase. They kept me up to date on parking and sent me emails suggesting the best way to park and get to the event. Amazing!!!! Can't thank them enough.
Game was awesome. Exiting the venue was a bit of a joke. Trying to get to the street after exiting the building was horrible. The whole exit system needs to be revisited. It's a bit dangerous. Overall, it was a good experience. It was my first visit to the Alamodome.
Seats were great. I was on the front Row on my teams side by the steps. Many former players and coaches passed in close proximity all game!
Highly recommend game if your team happens to be playing. Always a lot of fun.
Being in the South Texas region, this is the best bowl to make plans to see annually. Unfortunately, the Alamodome needs a major upgrade, especially the concession areas and options. My son and I sat in the upper deck and were right off of a concession stand. Unfortunately, a 20+ minute wait was the norm and the only option for a meal was hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, pretzel and peanuts. By halftime they were sold out of peanuts. For those trying to make it back to their seats or to get to the bathrooms, it was almost impossible to get through the crowd waiting to get concessions. The seats were good, but no cup holders is a bummer. I know San Antonio is trying to win the hosting of the national championship game. Unless the Alamodome gets a major overhaul and upgrade, I don't ever see it happening. There isn't enough seats, nor is there many of the amenities that the newer stadiums have.
Took my grandfather to Mack browns last game, and al though Texas got beat badly, it was still a terrific game to be at. The talent on the field was great, the hospitality was great, the atmosphere outside the stadium and inside was electric, would defiantly recommend to anyone who wants to go to an affordable bowl game with great teams the Alamo bowl never disappoints.
The game was a great experience. It was a lot of fun and there were a lot of great activities before and after the game as well.
Game was amazing, not a bad seat in the house. Our tickets were "obstructed view" but nothing was ever in our way except the ocassional person. Too bad texas couldnt give mac brown a winning send off...
The game was alright. Seats were horrible. We had no space. The seats were so small and I'm an average size dude.
The Alamo Bowl was a great event, but if you sit in the upper sections of the end zone, there is virtually no sound from the announcer that can be heard. Thus, you can't hear the official calls on the field or information about who made a tackle, etc. If you go to this event or any other sporting event, you might want to get seats in a lower section.
Game experience was awesome!! Loved the game and how everyone was excited over the game!
A most excellent game was played by The University of Texas Longhorns vs. Oregon State Beavers. Teams' entrance onto the field could use more flare...ya digg.
Great event to go to. Plenty of watering holes around the stadium to get you in the mood for the game. Great college crowd.
Tailgating was Awesome. Fan Fest was Excellent. Live Band was Fitting. Enjoy the Feeling just about every year, just like the very first year. Happy 20th.
