Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome

Each winter, San Antonio, Texas, hosts two of the premier teams in the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences in the Alamo Bowl. Since the game's inception, the Alamo Bowl has been played at the Alamodome, which opened in 1993 and has a current capacity of 64,000. Since 2010, the Alamo Bowl has pitted the second-choice Pac-12 team against the second-choice Big 12 team, leading to intriguing matchups and classic competitions.

Valero Alamo Bowl History

The first Alamo Bowl was played on December 31, 1993, when the California Golden Bears trounced the Iowa Hawkeyes, 37-3. Originally created with tie-ins to the Pac-10 conference and the Southwest Conference, a lack of eligible SWC schools in the game's inaugural season led to the entire conference's demise in 1995 and a longtime partnership with the Big Ten. The now-defunct Builders Square hardware chain was the titular sponsor of the Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, with Sylvania and MasterCard also sponsoring the game before an unsponsored 2006 bowl and Valero's current sponsorship since 2007.

There have been many memorable moments in the Alamo Bowl's history. In 2005, the Michigan Wolverines almost pulled off a miracle against Nebraska, but their eight-lateral final play was stopped at the Cornhusker 16-yard line, leading to a 32-28 Nebraska victory. In 2011, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III led Baylor to a 67-56 victory over Washington, in what remains the highest-scoring bowl game to end in regulation. The January 2016 Alamo Bowl featured a comeback for the ages when TCU overcame a 31-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Oregon in triple-overtime, 47-41. In December 2017, TCU kicked a 4th quarter field goal to squeak past Stanford, 39-37, and the 2018 contest featured No. 12 Washington State holding on against an upstart Iowa State team, beating the No. 25 Cyclones, 28-26.

My first Alamo Bowl was truly a great experience even though My KSU Wildcats didn't win the game! The tickets were great and I am glad I used Ticket Master for the event.

The Alamobowl was awesome. The atmosphere was electric and can't wait until next year. The Alamodome needs better food. It needs something that is special to the venue.

The atmosphere was fantastic, but the apparel vendors ran out of stuff rather quickly. This was very disappointing.

  • Nice Stadium Great parking options

The stadium was easy to navigate and our view from our seats was pretty good. The Park and Ride system made getting to and from the stadium really easy.

We had a nice time at the Alamobowl. Seats were great and VIP party was fun. My only suggestion at the VIP party is to make water and sodas as self serve. The wait lines to get water and soda were too long having to wait for people getting mixed drinks.

This was my first bowl game and the weather was cold and damp, but the event was fantastic. I am sorry to say my team list but still enjoyed the game and the crowd of fans. San Antonio know how to put on an event even the parking was great. I will go again!

  • Alamdome Sucks!

This is the 3rd time I attended the Alamo Bowl and it was the worst experience. I don't know that I 'll ever go back to this venue. The sound system in this venue is awful. It is so muffled that you can't hear the in game announcements much less any penalties the refs call out. They did not adequately staff the concession stands so that anyone that went waited in line over 30 minutes at any time during the game or before. Then the concession food wasn't even fresh for the outrageous prices you pay. And on top of it the workers were not putting the sales into a cash register but a spiral notebook and they even tried to overcharge us. Not to mention that we were sold tickets behind the replay screen and couldn't see any of the replays but this was not disclosed on the tickets. In addition the number of tv timeouts really took away from the game. There were far too many that were far too long. The only thing this venue gets right is the park and ride service. This service was very well organized and we got on buses on both ends very quickly.

    by Asiandoll15 on 1/5/14Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

The game itself was tough to watch because Texas lost, but the seats I had and the environment was incredible. It was great to be there to see Mack coach his last game. I would recommend these seats and to anyone going to this venue.

  • The "Event" was exciting the game was ho-hum.

This the first Alamobowl that I have ever attended. The outdoor events were an exciting introduction and, for our family, added to the pregame anticipation. Once inside we searched around for souvenirs and were a little diss appointed at the selections. A Nike store on site would have been awesome. Both teams forgot to bring their "A" game but the Longhorns and the Ducks are my two favorite teams and watching them play each other was a dream come true even if they didn't play their best ball. Overall a great experience!

This is the 2nd year I've gone to the Alamo Bowl and both times were fantastic. The crowds are always full. The teams are always good teams, and they really do go out of their way to create a memorable experience.
