Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome

Each winter, San Antonio, Texas, hosts two of the premier teams in the Big 12 and Pac-12 conferences in the Alamo Bowl. Since the game's inception, the Alamo Bowl has been played at the Alamodome, which opened in 1993 and has a current capacity of 64,000. Since 2010, the Alamo Bowl has pitted the second-choice Pac-12 team against the second-choice Big 12 team, leading to intriguing matchups and classic competitions.

Valero Alamo Bowl History

The first Alamo Bowl was played on December 31, 1993, when the California Golden Bears trounced the Iowa Hawkeyes, 37-3. Originally created with tie-ins to the Pac-10 conference and the Southwest Conference, a lack of eligible SWC schools in the game's inaugural season led to the entire conference's demise in 1995 and a longtime partnership with the Big Ten. The now-defunct Builders Square hardware chain was the titular sponsor of the Alamo Bowl from 1993 to 1998, with Sylvania and MasterCard also sponsoring the game before an unsponsored 2006 bowl and Valero's current sponsorship since 2007.

There have been many memorable moments in the Alamo Bowl's history. In 2005, the Michigan Wolverines almost pulled off a miracle against Nebraska, but their eight-lateral final play was stopped at the Cornhusker 16-yard line, leading to a 32-28 Nebraska victory. In 2011, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III led Baylor to a 67-56 victory over Washington, in what remains the highest-scoring bowl game to end in regulation. The January 2016 Alamo Bowl featured a comeback for the ages when TCU overcame a 31-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Oregon in triple-overtime, 47-41. In December 2017, TCU kicked a 4th quarter field goal to squeak past Stanford, 39-37, and the 2018 contest featured No. 12 Washington State holding on against an upstart Iowa State team, beating the No. 25 Cyclones, 28-26.

  • "The beer isn't working"

by afrogfan on 1/5/16Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

The game was fantastic, but my first visit to the Alamodome was very disappointing from a refreshment perspective. The kickoff was at 545 pm, so our family decided to eat at the game. Big mistake. The promised sausage area was nowhere to be found and the lines for food were long and moved VERY slowly. I was ok with paying stadium food prices, but I'm not going to buy a ticket to a football game and then spend an hour of the game standing in line for a burger or a hot dog. There were many beer stands, but most of them were inoperable. They said the beer lines "froze up". I've talked to other people since the game who said this has happened to them at the Alamodome, too. I'm a patient guy, not that picky, and do not complain lightly.

  • What a game!

by Mooneyflyer on 1/5/16Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Congratulations to both teams! I think this is probably the finest Alamo bowl game that I have ever seen. My wife and I have started making this an annual event as we come down to spend a little warm weather time away from snow, ice, tornadoes and earthquakes in Oklahoma. We cannot wait until next year to see what the excitement will bring. I am in your system, don't forget to call me about next your seats! Keep up the great work!

  • Go Ducks!!!

    by Mom2DuckFans on 1/5/16Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

Alamo Bowl was a blast! Although, cc machines were not working at any vending locations inside the Dome, sometimes technical issues just can't be resolved immediately. Valero and AlamoBowl seemed biased to TCU, almost as if we were attending at TCU home game.

When I read reviews, they are either glowing or negative. This one will have both. First the good. The stadium is beautiful. We sat on the 4th row in a 300 level section behind an endzone. We could see the entire game without any obstructions. I believe there isn't a bad seat in the house. The sound quality in the stadium is great and the video boards enhanced the game instead of distracting from it (like where the Dallas Cowboys play). We took the VIA to the stadium. It was unbelievably convenient - coming and going. The stadium doors were opened two hours before the game which gave plenty of time to get t-shirts and roam around the stadium taking pictures with the family. I did not like that the seats did not have cup holders or arm rests. It was difficult to juggle food and drink in the lap. I am guessing that cup holders would somehow reduce the number of seats they can cram into the building. The worst part of the experience was the concessions. Before the game started, we went to the concession area nearest to our 300 level seats. Of the 4 concession stands at that location, only 1 was open. The line was ridiculously long. Then when it was our turn to order, we were informed that they had just ran out of hot dogs. How in the world does a venue as well planned out and beautiful as this only have 1 concession stand open and run out of hot dogs before the game? There were a lot of grumblings from the other fans in the line. The lady at the counter was nice and polite. She simply wasn't given what was needed for a sold out bowl game of over 65,000 in attendance. Basically, the game and the stadium were awesome. Just be certain to eat a big meal before you go.

  • TCU rocks!!!

1st half sucked 2nd half, best football game I've ever seen! Go Horned Frogs!!!

  • Instant Classic

    by Mikey347 on 1/5/16Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

The game went from a blowout to an instant classic is a little more than half. The only negative was a venue issue...the parking is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!

  • Lousy Sound!

by ButkusK on 1/7/15Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

The sound system was terrible! It was too loud and you couldn't understand the announcer/referees. Slow bartenders at the bar in NW corner. Would be helpful if credit cards could be used. No drink cup holders at the seats. Needs updating.

by IllinoisCatFan on 1/6/15Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

Good atmosphere at the game. Mostly enjoyed the facilities and seats. Had a hard time understanding the PA announcer on the club level. Really liked San Antonio

  • alamo bowl awesome

    by pantherdad81 on 1/6/15Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

From the ease of printing the tickets to quickly entering the stadium to the reasonably priced food, all was wonderful. Made it easy to enjoy the game.

  • Alamo bowl was pretty good

by OlgaJo on 1/6/15Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

The teams were exciting. The venue had pluses and minuses. Never a problem to get a stall in the women's bathroom, except at halftime which was expected. The stadium was really hot. Also the ceiling dripped water from condensation? or the Rain?

  • It was a blast!!

by DixieJean on 1/6/15Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Although the weather was cold and misty, it was a great time. The fan area was busy with bands, food and games for all. I especially like the Bud Light wagon! We stayed all day and had a lot of fun.

  • Great Game

by KCLD on 1/5/15Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

Nice city, fun events surrounding the game. Handicapped parking access was poor. Guest services for transporting handicapped was not available from the other lots. Game announcers could be improved.

  • New Year Treat Awesome!

by FWLibrarian on 1/5/15Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The game was awesome! Neither team was my school (OU), but my husband and I are avid sports fans and would enjoy a good game regardless of who's playing. It was the ultimate treat for our New Year getaway. Two good teams displayed great talent.

  • Great game, lousy sound

    by nancy20131 on 1/5/15Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 2 out of 5

We could not hear much of anything the announcer said during the game including what the penalty was, who made a tackle, etc. The sound needs to be improved or they should include what is being said on a video screen or something. Disappointing.

  • Alamo Bowl Game was great but...

by KSUCOLORADOFAN on 1/5/15Alamodome - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

The game itself was incredible. However the facilities and the Riverwalk area were disappointing. The stadium facilities are old and the price points for food and beverage were higher than any other venue I've been in. The restaurants and service employees were disappointing. Restaurants didn't have enough room, food and beverages. Consistently kept hearing sorry we're out of this, we're out of that. How can you not be prepared! The knowledge of employees of area interests or directions was so bad. It's amazing that San Antonio wants tourism but is not equipped to handle it. Even the taxi cab drivers had no idea what to do when taking people to the Alamodome.

PA system was not good at all. Down and distance were usually a play behind. Video was average at best.
