NZ All Blacks v USA Eagles

by RugbyFanChicago on 11/8/16TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

Great game to see our home team Eagles take on the best in the world! The venue is great, not a bad seat in the house. But plan on driving, as it's very difficult to get back to the bus/train station (Ubers were 300% surge). It's in the middle of nowhere.

Kudos to USA Rugby for putting on this event. However, two things resulted in a "3" rating and my conclusion that I would not recommend this event: Location of venue and the event's time of day: Toyota Park was difficult to get to, and even worse because of traveling during a Friday rush hour. It took more than 90 minutes for our shuttle bus to get there from just South of downtown Chicago. In my area of the bus were people from the UK, China, Singapore, New Zealand and the US. This group started out jovial and good-humored, but by the time the bus reached the drop-off point near Toyota Park, which was barely before kick-off, the mood had changed to anger and irritation. Quality of US play: The Maori ABs were fun to watch, the US not so much. Our lads gave it their best, but It feels like our national team should be further along than it is. Bottom line: The experience was not worth taking an extra vacation day to fly in a day early, nor incurring an extra day of lodging, food and local travel expense.

    AWFUL CONNECTIONS TO STADIUM

by Whatapaintogetto on 11/7/16TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

The stadium was very difficult to get to - I would not do it there again without serious consideration. Chicago has terrible traffic - so driving is not a good option. Rugby fans drink a lot of beer - so driving is not a good option. So you take the train and there are extremely limited options for connections (busses) and no cabs available...... You need to solve how you are getting folks to the event. Maybe Northwestern would be better? concessions left a bit to be desired

    Logistical Disaster

by Whatapaintogetto on 11/7/16TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

Venue was great, etc. but either USA Rugby or Chicago Transit Authority (or both) made the event a bit of a trainwreck. Match was scheduled for an early evening kickoff in an area that had rush hour gridlock compounded by the Cubs Victory parade strains on public transit. We took the El to Midway and there were two buses for many hundreds lined up over an hour prior to kickoff. Rather than miss it we hopped cabs at the airport (who gouged on fares) and made it on time but it took over 30mins to go 5 miles. Lots of empty premium seats of fans who got stranded and either missed the match or simply gave up. Announcers said the event sold out. Post match was worse. 400 yard line, two buses, an army of CTA supervisors standing around meant a 90m wait for a bus back to Midway. Uber/lyft were surge price gouging for $90+ just to get back to the airport for the return train ride to the Loop. Get the logistics cleaned up or I won't go to Toyota again for rugby. This is from a fan who has attended 15 test matches.

    Not a great setup

by BigNug on 11/7/16TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

This venue was a pain to get to, and to my knowledge there were no shuttles provided from downtown. If there were any, USA Rugby made no effort in publicizing it. So, everyone coming from downtown had to take the train, followed by the bus. I left three hours before the game started, and barely got there on time. The "guards" at the gate had no idea where I needed to go. I was told by one that I need gate E. Went in, and found out my seat was on the opposite corner. I paid for a field level seat, and was one of the only people sitting in the row for the majority of the game. While I heard who I assume was the head photographer tell the others not to stand in front of the row of seats, the sideline camera crew had no problem standing directly in front of me every time the ball was on that half. After the game, many people climbed over the fence into the "field level" area, and there were not enough guards to do anything about it (although I understand this is due to rude people and not the venue, it would have been nice to have a couple more security guards that aren't 15 and easily ignored by the rude fans). The game itself was a wash, but that was expected. Overall, after the money I spent on my ticket only to have my view blocked for half the game and the hassle of getting to/from the stadium to/from downtown, I was very disappointed. They should have run both games at Soldier Field like the London Double Header.

    So dissapointing

    by GARYWFUR11 on 11/7/16TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

The US Men's team was out and out horrible to watch. They played without understanding of the game, tactically or strategically. Coaching should resign. # 10, 15 and 6 should never see the pitch again. I had hoped our humbling at the RWC would inspire our boys to work harder and smarter, neither of which I saw in our game Friday. We are going backwards, and leadership needs to be replaced. We need a 9 and 10 and 15 that actually understand the tactics and strategy of the game and know when to kick and when to run. Oh and they need to be able to execute a kick- especially a free kick. Our kicking game efforts Friday were so embarrassing and frequently used at the wrong time. Line outs were not executed well and our team fitness was poor as our few break away runs were unsupported. Overall F, and the audacity of our leadership to say that the USA didn't even think the Maori All Blacks were a high enough caliber team to award caps for the match. Granted our effort did not deserve caps, but to say the quality of opponent means we weren't awarding caps- preposterous from a team that went winless at RWC 2015. Transportation to and from the venue was horrible also. The venue seemed unprepared for the amount of food and drink items being sold, so massive amounts of the game were spent in line waiting for vendors...do soccer fans not drink beer or eat hotdogs?

The city of Chicago did well to showcase an amazing weekend of rugby!! Especially given it coincided with the Cubs' World Series win and parade.

    Public transportation was a nightmare

    by Albert15 on 11/7/16TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

First of all, I'm not giving one star because US team lost. It was a great rugby game. But what a nightmare to arrive and leave the stadium with public transportation ! A lot of people were not able to make it before the kick off time, because of traffic. In order to go there by public transportation you need to take a shuttle bus from and to the stadium. This is a 20-25 min bus ride and costs $2 (cash only, no change), where all others stadiums in the world provide free shuttle services. Now with such a cost, you would expect a first in class service. Forget it ! After the game, we had to stand more than 1 hour in the line waiting for the freaking bus ! This is unacceptable ! Food and drinks were also a nightmare, with very long lines that were preventing people to move around in the stadium. Unacceptable for this kind of event. This stadium is nice but infrastructure are not meant to handle big events. This has ruined our evening, we will never come back to this place.

Game was Great, Toyota Park was a fiasco

by TheKidFromCrumlin on 11/7/16TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

Let's do the good stuff first, the Eagles vs the Maori was a great game, the Maori showed the usual skill and the Eagles played with heart. It was always going to be a mismatch but it was a wonderful demonstration of rugby. Toyota Park on the other hand was a real mess, scheduling a game for 7PM meant that we fell into rush-hour traffic on a Friday to get to the venue. Resulting in a lot of people getting to the facility late. Our cab driver was not allowed to pull into the ridershare drop-off, so instead we had to sit in traffic till we got to a parking lot he could drop us at. When we got to the entrance, the security people had no idea what entrances people should be using, so just started yelling to form one line. We had opted for 'on field seats' getting nice and close to the action, but the on-field tickets are not labeled to match the 'sections', so we went on a wild-goose chase to find our seats. We kept being given conflicting information from the people at the venue, as to the direction we should go, and once someone took the iniative and went to get us an answer we found out where to sit. Having been at the stadium for the anthems, we finally got to our seats with 20 minutes of the game played. Leaving was also a mess, traffic was at a stand still around the park, with only a couple of busses to take the 20K fans that booked tickets (and again conflicting information from the event staff) a large group of people just collected over at a gas station waiting for cabs/ride-shares etc.

Game was fun, Toyota Park transportation was not

by Anonymous on 11/7/16TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

The game was fun! But transportation to and from the game was a nightmare! We took the train in to Midway and tried to grab a bus from there, but the wait to get onto a bus was about 45 minutes. We decided to take a taxi and the traffic was so bad, we missed the first 20 minutes of the game. Once the game ended, we decided to give the buses another try. The line to get onto a bus wrapped around the entire parking lot, and from the looks of it, they only had 3 buses running and only one was there when the game ended. We ended up taking an uber back to midway but, again, the traffic was so bad it took about an hour to get there. So if you're going to go to Toyota Park, I would recommend giving your self a couple of hours to get over there, or finding yourself a DD and driving yourself.

The field was beautiful. The match, unfortunately, did not go in my teams favor, but the seats were great nonetheless. However, the location of this field in comparison to the city is pretty far and unclear of how to to use mass transit to get there conveniently.

Great To Have Rugby in Chicago Area

    by Mary8976 on 11/7/16TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

It was great to have a professional rugby match in the Chicago area again and to have quality teams. While any rugby fan would go to see any team, quality teams bring in international rugby fans. What great exposure for Chicago and Rugby
