Thursday night, I saw PSU's production of "UrineTown - The Musical". My "mixed review is unfortunate because the negative is mostly the written material (although there are laughs galore). It really drags in places (especially in the first act). There is a Narrator which is used in other notable musicals (including my favorite "Blood Brothers") and can be too overwhelming. But not in this case. I can't tell you the name of Officer Lockstock because the program book doesn't list the performers and their bios (one has to look in the foyer for that, and even there, the character names are omitted - a BIG shame). He and the entire cast are nearly BRILLIANT. There are two exceptions... so that's amazing to have such a large, talented group of PROs like you'll find in this production. The music is well played by the local orchestra directed by the very talented Cyndi Ramsey-Rier. The musical numbers are far more good than bad... they mostly move the show along, and have clever lyrics. There is a "WOW" number done with flashlights that is unforgettable! The set is well designed and constructed, the lighting is terrific. The singing almost always soars to great heights, the acting is very good (one over-actor can spoil perfection), the Choreography is spot-on wonderful! The dancing is surprisingly good. It's tight even though there are non-trained dancers in the cast. This is a top-notch production about a strange, strange "place" and an even stranger concept. I thoroughly enjoyed the 2.5 hour Musical and recommend that you get to the Lincoln Performance Hall tonight because unfortunately it ends this weekend.
