About

Tyler Perry on Tour

Say goodbye to America's most malevolent mother. After 10 plays and as many films, Tyler Perry is retiring Madea, his most memorable — and profitable — creation. Introduced in Perry's 1999 play I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Madea will meet her end in 2019 during the Madea Farewell Play Tour and latest movie, A Madea Family Funeral.

Before Perry put on his Madea wig, makeup, and fat suit, he was a high school dropout in New Orleans inspired to write by an Oprah Winfrey episode. His 1998 play I Know I Been Changed and its successors became wildly popular on the urban theater circuit. They financed Perry's first film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which he wrote, produced, and starred in. The 2005 release marked the cinematic debut of the intimidating and felonious "Madea" Mabel Simmons, her hapless brother Joe, and his son Brian — all played by Perry.

Madea — her name is the Southern pronunciation of "mother dearest" — is based on Perry's own mother and aunt combined with Eddie Murphy's over-the-top performance in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. The 10 Madea films have grossed more than $500 million at the box office. Perry memorialized Madea's words of wisdom in a 2006 book, Don't Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings: Madea's Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life. (Sample advice: "Too many people want to be friends with their children.")

Not all of Perry's films have been comedies. He adapted Ntozake Shange's acclaimed 1975 theater work as the 2010 film For Colored Girls. In addition to nearly four dozen movies and plays, he has also developed several TV series, including Tyler Perry's House of Payne, The Haves and the Have-Nots, and Love Thy Neighbor. As an actor, Perry plays Admiral Barnett in Star Trek and former Secretary of State Colin Powell in Vice.

While Madea — a character Oprah Winfrey has described as "a compilation of all those strong black women that I know and maybe you do too" — has been the cornerstone of Perry's rewarding career, he doesn't sound completely sorry about seeing her go. As he told radio host Bevy Smith, "I just don't want to be her age, playing her."

    Best show EVER

by Mommanetta on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

The line to get into the location was quick! We were able to find out seat with the help of polite staff with no problem. As expected the show was funny, full of wisdom and well put together! It was ALL WAS WONDERFUL. My only complaint is that I spent so much on my floor tickets to not be able to see but half of the stage at one time bc a women decided to sit in front of me with really big hair. I rocked back all night to see the show. Even only being able to see half the stage, I could recognize EXCELLENCE!

    Madea’s Farewell Tour: Tyler Perry

by Kedrin Herron on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

This event was amazing; Tyler Perry did an exceptional job with the production of “Madea’s Farewell Tour;” - the comedic moments, the vocal ability displayed, the life lessons disclosed, etc. - nothing short of amazing! It was also lovely to see over ten thousand people show their support for the show in one night! A delightful evening! We had a great time seeing this show on Valentine’s Day!

    Great Show Bad Seats

by Joe D. McHenry on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

The show was awesome and content was life sustaining. However, I do have a major concern with the website of the ticket purchasing process. I tried several times to change/upgrade to better seating but I seemed to be locked in. I have never had an issue in the past with your site, but the seating issue and the regress after the show did not meet expectations

    Terrible sound quality!

    by B. J. on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

My husband and I were on the 3rd level and the sound quality was terrible! There were echoes everywhere. I couldn't hear half of what they were saying. I felt bad for my husband who had a slight hearing impairment. I know he couldn't hear much, but he didn't complain as not to ruin my evening. The seats were too close with zero walking room. It was very dangerous! We will never attend another event there. Many people around us left very early on in the play. Surely T.P. was told B. A. wasn't a good venue for a play. My guess is just wanted to pack on as much people as possible. They also didnt have enough consession open. If you got consessions you missed the first of the pkay. They also ran put of food. Terrible, Terrible experience!

by Kevin K on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

I don't know that I have seen a better live show. We were hurting from laughing, crying from the music and joyful from the messages. So amazing. FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY! My only regret is that it's the FAREWELL tour. I hope they bring it back for an encore!

    Bad setting for a play

by Anonymous on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

The arena was a bad location for a play due to the echoing in the arena. I don't think i heard or understood 3/4 of what was said. Stage was so far away we had to watch on the large monitor. Not the best experience.

I enjoyed the play. I love to laugh, so I laughed my butt off. The best part to me was Chris Stapleton. He is my favorite country singer. I enjoyed myself.

    Absolutely PERFECT

by Kierra LaKiias on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

All I can say is WOW. What a phenomenal night. February 14, 2020 was the BEST day of my life and I don’t think that anything else can top it. I had a floor seat so I had an excellent view of the stage. Tyler Perry is my inspiration and I still cannot believe that I was in his presence. I cried when he came out on stage as Madea. Everyone was amazing and Tamela Mann’s singing blew me away. I hate that Madea is gone but I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to see her live during her farewell play. Mister Perry, thank you so much for bringing your tour to the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. You deserve everything that you have been blessed with and more. This is a night that I will remember for the rest of my life!!!

    Great Play

by Mrs. BSC on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

The play was great it allowed us to if only for a moment to forget the life changing event happening to our democracy. I really need that shot of hope exhibited in the play.
