About

Tyler Perry on Tour

Say goodbye to America's most malevolent mother. After 10 plays and as many films, Tyler Perry is retiring Madea, his most memorable — and profitable — creation. Introduced in Perry's 1999 play I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Madea will meet her end in 2019 during the Madea Farewell Play Tour and latest movie, A Madea Family Funeral.

Before Perry put on his Madea wig, makeup, and fat suit, he was a high school dropout in New Orleans inspired to write by an Oprah Winfrey episode. His 1998 play I Know I Been Changed and its successors became wildly popular on the urban theater circuit. They financed Perry's first film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which he wrote, produced, and starred in. The 2005 release marked the cinematic debut of the intimidating and felonious "Madea" Mabel Simmons, her hapless brother Joe, and his son Brian — all played by Perry.

Madea — her name is the Southern pronunciation of "mother dearest" — is based on Perry's own mother and aunt combined with Eddie Murphy's over-the-top performance in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. The 10 Madea films have grossed more than $500 million at the box office. Perry memorialized Madea's words of wisdom in a 2006 book, Don't Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings: Madea's Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life. (Sample advice: "Too many people want to be friends with their children.")

Not all of Perry's films have been comedies. He adapted Ntozake Shange's acclaimed 1975 theater work as the 2010 film For Colored Girls. In addition to nearly four dozen movies and plays, he has also developed several TV series, including Tyler Perry's House of Payne, The Haves and the Have-Nots, and Love Thy Neighbor. As an actor, Perry plays Admiral Barnett in Star Trek and former Secretary of State Colin Powell in Vice.

While Madea — a character Oprah Winfrey has described as "a compilation of all those strong black women that I know and maybe you do too" — has been the cornerstone of Perry's rewarding career, he doesn't sound completely sorry about seeing her go. As he told radio host Bevy Smith, "I just don't want to be her age, playing her."

    Event was amazing....however!!!!!

    by Ms D on 2/28/20FedExForum - Memphis

This was first experience to the FedEx Forum for an event, I was excited about going and my co-worker gave me the morning for my tickets, since they were a little pricey, but you only live once (I did not won't the nosebleed section) so I brought my ticket on the floor several rows from the stage (BIG MISTAKE) after paying for what I thought would be the best seats, turned out to be horrible.....Do not get me wrong the Tyler Perry Show was great....however the seats was not...men wore their hats and kept them on, women had huge weave on and kept flip it....the nosebleed section at least saw the hold show...I had to settle for hearing most of the show instead of seeing it, because of hats and weave....paying more money is all I did paid for hearing Madea and the other actors....next time I... if there be a next time... I will consider not sitting on floor...horrible choice for the money....

    Great

I did not like being in the nose bleeding section when there were seats available in the bottom but when my daughter- in - law looks at seats available there weren’t any showing in the bottom why was that. There were many complaints around my seating area. Please check into this if you ever come to Nashville again.

    I was disappointed

by Cherwray on 2/21/20VSU Multi-Purpose Center - Petersburg

The play itself was good but the sound was horrible. I was sitting on the 3rd row of the stands and when the actors voices got loud the sound was very distorted and we couldn't hear what they were saying. I received the same feedback from several people that also attended the play. This was the first play I have attended of Tyler Perrys' and it would have been nice if I could have enjoyed it and not strained to hear what they were saying

    “MADEA“

by Myken on 2/18/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

The performance, was everything!!! This was my first time seeing one of Tyler Perry’s plays live. I absolutely loved it!!! I purchased floor seats (2nd row from the stage) money well spent. We laughed the whole entire 2.5hrs. So sad that this is farewell. I love Tyler Perry, and he and his production are welcome in Nashville at any time, we will definitely support. We were surprised with a special guest in the audience, Chris Stapleton, singing “Tennessee Whisky “,it was very nice also enjoyed Tyler’s unscripted encouraging advice. Would have loved to been able to just tell him hello, or give a hug to. Tyler you are such an inspiration. May God continue to bless you and your gifted ability to make people laugh and bring much joy. You are so appreciated and love. Great choice Bridgestone for hosting this show. Ticketmaster my experience with you was easy. Great Show!!!!
