About

Tyler Perry on Tour

Say goodbye to America's most malevolent mother. After 10 plays and as many films, Tyler Perry is retiring Madea, his most memorable — and profitable — creation. Introduced in Perry's 1999 play I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Madea will meet her end in 2019 during the Madea Farewell Play Tour and latest movie, A Madea Family Funeral.

Before Perry put on his Madea wig, makeup, and fat suit, he was a high school dropout in New Orleans inspired to write by an Oprah Winfrey episode. His 1998 play I Know I Been Changed and its successors became wildly popular on the urban theater circuit. They financed Perry's first film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which he wrote, produced, and starred in. The 2005 release marked the cinematic debut of the intimidating and felonious "Madea" Mabel Simmons, her hapless brother Joe, and his son Brian — all played by Perry.

Madea — her name is the Southern pronunciation of "mother dearest" — is based on Perry's own mother and aunt combined with Eddie Murphy's over-the-top performance in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. The 10 Madea films have grossed more than $500 million at the box office. Perry memorialized Madea's words of wisdom in a 2006 book, Don't Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings: Madea's Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life. (Sample advice: "Too many people want to be friends with their children.")

Not all of Perry's films have been comedies. He adapted Ntozake Shange's acclaimed 1975 theater work as the 2010 film For Colored Girls. In addition to nearly four dozen movies and plays, he has also developed several TV series, including Tyler Perry's House of Payne, The Haves and the Have-Nots, and Love Thy Neighbor. As an actor, Perry plays Admiral Barnett in Star Trek and former Secretary of State Colin Powell in Vice.

While Madea — a character Oprah Winfrey has described as "a compilation of all those strong black women that I know and maybe you do too" — has been the cornerstone of Perry's rewarding career, he doesn't sound completely sorry about seeing her go. As he told radio host Bevy Smith, "I just don't want to be her age, playing her."

    Tyler Perry play

by Mattie on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

The play was very good and having one of my favorite country music entertainers (Chris Stapleton) there was truly exciting. The only issue that I had was when the event was over the third floor escalator was out and caused a great inconvenience.

    by K. B. on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

The play was extremely entertaining, and full of laughter. Tyler Perry plays are exactly like how you see them on TV or DVD. The price was well worth the content and quality. I would recommend everyone to go out and see it! Thanks Tyler Perry for never letting your audience down!

Madea’s Farewell Tour was THE funniest, most awesome time!

by simone on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

That genuine genius, Tyler Perry, & his brilliant cast, still have us laughing & quoting hysterical lines (now, days after the stellar show)! In addition to everyone’s impeccable comic-timing, apparently the cast was given all the talent in the world, as their singing voices were incredible! The band, also the best, not to mention, ( but I will) set, & lighting ... (those birds 🦅) wardrobe, (Glow n the dark, & all) it was as great if not greater, than any Broadway experience! Lucky to have seen 1 of the very last performances. It’s so sad (for all who haven’t had the opportunity to see Madea & her fam/friends ... live) that Madea is done touring. But she’s a busy broad! Best show ever!

    Amazing

by M. Lo on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

Im a huge Tyler Perry fan anf have been to 3 of his plays before this one. I'd been waiting and Googling for years wondering when he was going to come back out with a new play. The Farrwell Tour came to Nashville,Tn and didn't disappoint. It was the best Play/Concert that I've ever attended. My wife (of 6yrs) & I went on Valentines Day 2020 and the show exceeded our expectations, the entire audience was simply tears with laughter, and even got a song sample frome Tennessees own Chris Stapelton (Tennessee Whiskey) who was on attendance. This is the 1st review I've ever written, but I felt it to be necessary .Madea will be sorely missed, but we will just have to catch Tyler Perry on the big screen. Thanks to Tyler and Company for the decades of love, fun, laughter, and life lessons. Thank you and God Bless.

    Absolutely Hilarious!!!

by Sabrina on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

You will laugh the entire play. Musical one liners, costumes everything simply amazing and entertaining. So worth the money. Downside, the beautiful Bridgestone arena has staffing management issues that causes ticket holders to stand in lines wrapped around the building and you miss half the show. Need an hour to get in the building.

    Good show, small seats

by Dr. TAYLOR on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

The show was great, however the seats were tiny and far, far from the stage. It was super crowded.

    Messed up seat

by Junebug on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

The show was Awsome and I give it 100%! However, my seat was the seat from Hell! It was a seat for a child because I could not sit in that seat at all. I tried both sides of the seat ,seating was comfortable. This was smaller and I had to stand at the back. Due to my leg couldn’t stand long. I missed the last half of the show. I want a refund.

Hope the play was good, couldn’t hear it!

by Gmashco on 2/17/20Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

Well the Bridgestone isn’t the friendliest place for those who have trouble walking. I was seated in section 301 but the elevator was located in section 314, a long distance from 301. I was in pain when I reached my section. Then there was the sound issue, you couldn’t hear very well and no one ever turned up the sound. But you could hear a lot of bass, just not the actors voices! Just because I was seated up high didn’t mean I shouldn’t hear the play....It was disappointing
