    Ultimate Symphonic Rock Show average

by Anonymous on 2/10/15Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

The selection of songs was good. But the lead singer's vocals were drowned out by the bass guitar. Very hard to hear the strings and vocals. Backup vocalists were hard to hear too, but it sounded like they didn't harmonize well at all. Didn't seem to blend well.

    A classic night

by stringguy on 2/10/15Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

Classic in blue jeans does it again! This Canadian group teamed with the excellent TSO put on a show for the ages. The pieces performed captured just the right amount of classical orchestration with traditional rock.

Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde was magical

by Tavito50 on 2/5/15Catalina Foothills High School - Tucson

The music was magical and the performers were excellent. It seemed t o me however that their voices did not project enough into the hall. At times their voices were barely audible. Ms Mumford' voice projected very nicely into to the hall especially during the final song, the Abschied. However, Mr Giffrey did not have that nice tenor ping you expect to hear from a lyric tenor. The Catalina Foothills High music hall may just have poor acoustics or perhaps I was mistakenly expecting the perfection of the recordings I've heard so many times. The 13-piece chamber ensemble was enchanting. I did feel that intimacy that George Hanson spoke about in the pre-concert talk.

    Great orchestra, good program

by PCinAZ on 1/21/15Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

We are new to Tucson, have lived here just under a year, and this was our first attendance at a Tucson Symphony Orchestra concert. We chose this particular concert because the Poulenc Gloria has special meaning for us - we heard its world premiere performance in Boston 54 years ago, when my wife and I were just starting our serious courtship. We were greatly impressed with the quality of the TSO, much better than we were expecting. Besides the Poulenc, the program included two Richard Strauss pieces, Don Juan and excerpts from Der Rosenkavalier. The Don Juan was exciting, but we found the operatic excerpts kind of boring. Competently performed, but over long, and impossible to follow the lyrics without the help of surtitles. Since that was our first concert in the Tucson Music Hall, we weren't sure where we should sit for the best sound. We bought tickets for the front row balcony, just left of center, but found the sound there overly bright, to the point of being harsh. After intermission we found some vacant seats in the right center orchestra, and the sound there was much better. We'll know next time. We do appreciate that the seats all have ample leg room. Glad we had a chance to hear the TSO under Maestro Hanson before he leaves the scene.

    Soon to be forgotten

by Anonymous on 1/21/15Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

The Tucson symphony offering of 18 January will soon be forgotten. Technically, the orchestra was excellent. What was poorly done was 1) the featured soprano was poorly miked, 2) the chorus amplification was poor as well. Finally, the content was ill-conceived. Selecting excerpts from a little known opera just did not work. Using another female singer to do a male part did not work either particularly with her ridiculous gestures. It was a program guaranteed to fail simply because of the content. The theme was "love." The only love I felt was when the final curtain fell.

    passionate guest conductor

by eddoc1 on 1/21/15Catalina Foothills High School - Tucson

Mr. Harada did an outstanding job of conducting the TSO. He was very animated and expressive on-stage, and during the intermission he mingled with the audience and asked for feedback. As always, the TSO performed marvelously.

    Family Affair

by 2014Di on 12/28/14Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

This event was a potpourri of musical arts, orchestra, choir, bagpipes, ballet. The first time my granddaughters, aged 6 & 7, attended a symphony. I was expecting pleas to leave early in the performance, but the variety of music and quick change pace kept the attention of the fidgety munchkins. We each described our favorite part on the way home and while each person named their favorite, the ballerinas and Santa stole the show. A good time was had by all.

    Mixed bag

by TraditionalTucsonan on 12/24/14Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

Upbeat and mostly fun, but what do bagpipes and hornpipe dancing have to do with Christmas? And the version of Little Drummer Boy fused with Ravel's Bolero, "Little Bolero Boy," was revolting. It will taint the real Bolero for me for some time to come; this was the nightmare before Christmas. I would encourage: stick to more traditional seasonal music in the future. The 12 days of Christmas that toured past musical styles was interesting, but didn't really work for me. I would rather have heard authentic Christmas music from a few of these past centuries.

    Pipes were awesome!

by Chesthete on 12/24/14Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

Loved the pipe and drum band, especially on Highland Cathedral! Blended well with the orchestra. Great concert for evoking nostalgia for past Christmases, and getting one in The Christmas Spirit!

    Magic of Christmas, magical!

by RARARA on 12/23/14Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

Our last minute decision was based on wanting to do something out of the house and in to the city to celebrate the holiday. The program sounded intriguing and we were not disappointed. Lots of young families with children and you could feel their "awe". Not a bit of howling or squirming. The music was rich and inventive and combined with the dancing and bagpipes made for a lovely time. I couldn't stop smiling and singing, too. Special kudos to the "lighting" department, who did a wonderful job of creating the fantasy. We are looking forward to another program.

    Tucson Magic of Christmas

by pmhtucson on 12/23/14Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

This was the first event I've attended in Tucson since moving here. It was very well presented by various music and dance professionals in the area. Several of the composition arrangements were unique and fun. The guest conductor made the even fun for all ages with his humor and personality.
