We are new to Tucson, have lived here just under a year, and this was our first attendance at a Tucson Symphony Orchestra concert. We chose this particular concert because the Poulenc Gloria has special meaning for us - we heard its world premiere performance in Boston 54 years ago, when my wife and I were just starting our serious courtship. We were greatly impressed with the quality of the TSO, much better than we were expecting.
Besides the Poulenc, the program included two Richard Strauss pieces, Don Juan and excerpts from Der Rosenkavalier. The Don Juan was exciting, but we found the operatic excerpts kind of boring. Competently performed, but over long, and impossible to follow the lyrics without the help of surtitles.
Since that was our first concert in the Tucson Music Hall, we weren't sure where we should sit for the best sound. We bought tickets for the front row balcony, just left of center, but found the sound there overly bright, to the point of being harsh. After intermission we found some vacant seats in the right center orchestra, and the sound there was much better. We'll know next time. We do appreciate that the seats all have ample leg room.
Glad we had a chance to hear the TSO under Maestro Hanson before he leaves the scene.
