About

Trooper in Concert

If you've ever found yourself in a loud bar, at a sporting event in Canada or passing by a convertible Camaro at some point in the past 40-odd years, there's a good chance you've had a Trooper song soundtracking the experience. From the mid-to-late 1970s, the Vancouver quintet pumped out a steady stream of Top 40 singles that encompassed everything you'd want in a rock band: arena-sized riffs, huge shout-aloud hooks and lyrics about cars and having a good time. Trooper was formed by frontman Ra McGuire and guitarist Brian Smith, whose creative relationship dated back to their late-'60s psychedelic combo Winter's Green, which later changed its name to Applejack. After catching the ear of Guess Who/Bachman-Turner Overdrive guitarist Randy Bachman (who offered the band their first record deal), the group rebranded itself a final time as Trooper. Early singles like "General Hand Grenade" and "Santa Maria" betrayed traces of their hippie roots with their easygoing, acoustic-driven melodies, but with their 1978 foot-stomping anthem "Raise a Little Hell" and the following year's dramatic, hard-charging "The Boys in the Bright White Sportscar," Trooper proved they could hold their own alongside the era's rowdiest rockers. (The band's hitmaking legacy was cemented with the essential 1979 compilation Hot Shots, which hit No. 2 on the Canadian album charts and went five times platinum.) The hit parade slowed in the ‘80s, and the band haven't released an album of new material since 1991, but Trooper has remained sporadically active as a touring outfit over the years, becoming firmly entrenched in the Canadian pop-cultural canon. In 2001, they were the beneficiaries of a punk-themed tribute album, Shot Spots, featuring hardcore legends like D.O.A. and SNFU, while a 35th-anniversary campaign in 2010 saw them performing at such high-profile events as the Vancouver Winter Olympics and the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup. Contrary to the mantra espoused by one of their most beloved sing-alongs, "We're Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)," Trooper are indeed here for both.

  • Concert (Awesome) - Venue (Needs Improvement)

by Will Kiely on 7/25/25The KEE to Bala - BalaRating: 4 out of 5

Trooper was amazing! They played all the hits and the crowd was loving it. All the instruments had their solos as well so the band felt super organized and also in sync. The only reason I won’t give 5 stars is because of the venue. I love the Kee to Bala, but it needs serious attention. It was raining, and water was seeping in through the side doors and coming down from the roof. When the main floor is becoming a pool, it’s hard to enjoy the concert. If these issues could be fixed I’d give a 5 star rating.

  • Trip to Trooper

by Greggy on 7/22/25The KEE to Bala - BalaRating: 5 out of 5

Lots of fun. The band was great. The venue is really nice. Vibe is good. The deck is great. It was a cool evening so it wasn't hot in the building. Prices for a beer is $14.00ish which is excessive. There aren't many options for beer either. I think there is Bud, Corona and Michelob....or something like that. The band didnt start until 10pm so in the future we will arrive later. Overall it was great and we would return.

  • Awesome Show

by Tiger64 on 2/25/25Grey Eagle Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

The back up band was good, but TROOPER was great. Drum solo, guitar solo, bass solo, keyboard solo. All of them where great. They played for 1:45min not including the standing ovation curtain call that they came out for and played 3 more songs. The singer has not lost a bit of voice and got the crowd into the show also. All in all a fabulous show and a great venue. Thanks so much

  • Too LOUD

by GrayPaige on 2/7/25Great Canadian Casino Vancouver - CoquitlamRating: 3 out of 5

We were so looking forward to seeing the new Trooper. Unfortunately, as soon aa the show started, it was way to loud, The feedback and buzzing from the Guitar and Bass made it very uncomfortable to many people including ourselves. We al most left the show. With fantastic musicians and music, it does not need to make our chairs vibrated in the last row. I have been going to concerts since 1972. I love music loud, but not twangy and buzzing. Sorry, but when the songs where not too loud, it sounded great.

  • Very loud and distorted

Very loud and distorted. Recommend not driving the speakers so hard for potentially better quality sound. Liked Trooper though!

  • Great Show - Terrible Entry

by JB on 12/31/24Midway Music Hall - EdmontonRating: 2 out of 5

We've been to a few concerts at Midway and while the experience of watching a concert is excellent - the process of getting into the venue itself is ridiculous. We know, from experience, that the only reason to get there early is if you want one of the very few seats adjacent the stage. When we attended Trooper, we had someone in our party who recently hurt his knee and thought we should go early to get him a seat. The website said the venue will open an hour before the show and the ticket said 7pm. We arrived just before 6 along with several other vehicles. The venue doors opened at 7:15 and the line went around the corner and down the street. The temp was around -10 and many people stood for as much as 2 hours outside before being admitted. Not only were people freezing & annoyed - but when the doors finally opened - it took over 45 minutes to clear the line. For those attending a concert - there are essentially no seats. And there is no sense in going and standing in line. The doors always open late - the concert always starts late and you can just walk in and make your way towards the front. Don't go to the website as it's completely misleading.

Well I knew they were mostly all New singers however they were Fantastic and even hit notes Higher. They were Bang on and "Wow"the audience like I did Loved them. Hit after Hit they played and I looked at so many people with smiles and singinging the songs. I would and intend to see these guys as Many times as possible. If you have not seen the New Trooper than I must say you Gotta see them. I'm 100% sure you will come out with smiles on your face. So go ahead and "Raise a Little Hell"with TROOPER.
