About

Trombone Shorty is the best-known moniker for Troy Andrews. He was born into a well-known New Orleans musical family in 1986. His grandfather, Jessie Hill, was a locally popular R&B recording artist. His older brother, James "12" Andrews, is a successful jazz trumpeter who was also an early mentor. Andrews began playing music at a very early age and was playing professionally at the age of five. He mastered trombone, trumpet, and drums, eventually choosing the trombone as his principal instrument and thus picking up his nickname. So advanced was he that, at the age of eight, a club in the city’s Tremé district, where he was born and raised, was named Trombone Shorty’s in his honor.

Andrews became a member of the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts' (NOCCA) musical education program for high-school students, other graduates including Harry Connick, Jr., Nicholas Payton, and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. At NOCCA, Andrews took music theory, ear training, and instrumental instruction courses under Clyde Kerr, Jr. and Kent Jordan, among others. In 2003 he was one of five young musicians chosen as the subjects for a PBS television documentary and also performed in the network's nationally broadcast tribute to Louis Armstrong, directed by Wynton Marsalis. Outside his home town, Andrews has appeared with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and has performed with U2 and Green Day. He has also traveled extensively overseas, playing concerts and festivals in Cuba and Europe; he has appeared at the Vienna Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, and the Istanbul Jazz Festival.

As a recording artist, Andrews has appeared on Global Song of Kids, a collection of children’s songs played in the style of New Orleans marching bands that was released in Japan. His first recording under his own name, Swingin’ Gate, was issued in 2002 and featured several of his own compositions; it was acclaimed by jazz critics. This was followed in 2004 by The Same Pocket, Vol. 1 (by the BlueBrass Project) and 12 & Shorty (with his brother James' band); in 2005 by the Treme Records releases The End of the Beginning (by the Troy Andrews Quintet) and Orleans & Claiborne (by Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews & Orleans Avenue); and by four volumes of his performances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival entitled Live at Jazz Fest 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. He also appeared on the club hit "Tufflove" on Galactic's Ya-Ka-May in 2010 before releasing his Verve Records debut, Backatown (on which he not only plays trombone but also sings and plays trumpet, keyboards, drums, and other percussion), under the Trombone Shorty moniker. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

    Trombone Shorty not for audiophiles

The base was so loud and distorted I had to leave. I would not call it Jazz.

    Trombone shorty

by wase on 8/14/18Bethel Woods Center for the Arts - Bethel

The bands representing New Orleans Classical Jazz, were great, noise level was appropriate. When the the trombone shorty came on the stage, i understood that if i will stay, and listen i will loose my hearing, which will make me good candidate for fuhrer hearing aid business. Too laud...; The were showing off too much as well, not needed as they are very talented, the showing off and intolerable noise, made us to actually leave, so we beat the leaving crowds...

Trombone Shorty is a Rock Star

by VonHazze on 8/14/18Bethel Woods Center for the Arts - Bethel

The Trombone Shorty Voodeux Throwdown tour was exceptional. If you are not familiar with Trombone Shorty and you like good time, get on your feet and dance music, you’d really love this performer and this tour. The entire lineup is loaded with amazing musicians and top rated bands. The music of NOLA is something special we in America are lucky to have. Emphasis on the brass and marching bands lends itself immediately to standing up getting down and hsvibg a blast with your friends. The Preservation Jazz Hall Band is a classic NO treat and we’re all fortunate they do what they do. Galactic is worthy of top billing. Their singer is new to me but damn she is special. Her harmonic control was goosebump enducing and together their version of Bob Dylan’s Like a Rolling Stone was special and undeniably powerful. I’ve seen many bands cover this song but this version is worthy of seeking out as it’s spellbinding and by far the best I’ve seen or heard. I feel confident I will never hear another version so powerful and moving. Soul doesn’t begin to describe what they captured and produced in the stage. Now up to this point the show was odd in the respect that the afternoon downpours and forecast for more of the same dampened the mood and led to a very stationary and seated audience. This for me was more than odd and doesn’t add up for a NO brass band themed night. To me the music of NOLA screens get up and dance there’s time for sitting latter, yet the audience held to their seats quite tightly. Even more odd to me was the audience although stationary and seated and mostly unfamiliar with the musicians on stage, was very accommodating to any requests to get up and dance from the musicians and roared loudly in between songs and acts. Very mixed signals indeed. The rain held to a light mist and allowed for use of lawn section which was completely empty with exception of myself and 4 guests and an occasional drifter. The venue was very kind in allowing all attendees into the pavilion regardless of tickets purchased as sales were low and the fear of rain iminent. Would have been good to know ahead of time as there was a large difference between the $40 lawn and $90 for lower pavilion seats which we opted for in advance. This being my only disappointment as would eventually come to have it, for 5 tickets we spent $250.00 additional for the pavilion seats which all had access to. That’s a substantial amount of money which we all could have used to offset many other costs if the night light dinner, cabs, parking, and beverages. Hind sight is 20/20 I suppose. Finally, the main act and head liner Trombone Shorty. Presence is something this performer and musician commands. He is a rock star in every sense of the word. He owns qualities associated with the likes of Bruno Mars and Michael Jackson yet also blows that horn like none you’ve ever seen before. It is truly spectacular to behold and to experience live and in person. His blend of brass band, NOLA traditional marching band, rock, jazz, and pop is unique and an excrotional blend no one else possesses. Similar in the way bands like Sublime mix reggae, rock, and punk to create s sound s d feel all to their own. The crowd not knowing what to expect face every bit of respect to the headliner as most of the sedentary crowd was finally out of their seats and finally danced to music so beautifully performed and delivered. Those that stayed and endured the rain and motionless crowd were rewarded and treated to a musical treat that no one could dislike. The crowd danced and hollered with every call and response. It was awesome. The night was different than expected but mostly due to the rain. The performances were spectacular and delivered despite a less than enthused audience which by the end of the night was ready to all night if the music continued to play. Bethel Woods is amongst the most beautiful of Amphitheater’s in this country and is not to be missed by anyone that loves music and cares to experience a legendary venue so importantly tied to American rock and roll. The venue is immaculate and manicured to a T. The staff warm and receptive and the concessions of s very high quality and standard. There is plenty offered by the facility to make a day of it with friends and family yet the weather for this event dimmed it’s attractuvemess but should not overshadow it’s existence and importance not to be missed. In the end the night was spectacular and my only very small negative is I would have loved to not have spent $90/tix when a $40tix gave access to the shelter and safety of the covered pavilion. I highly recommend anyone to catch any Trombone Shorty performance you can. His records are great but live he is not to be missed. A living Trombone playing rock star extraordinaire. You’ll love it if you like good music. Cheers EB

    Santana

by 318peach on 8/14/18Bethel Woods Center for the Arts - Bethel

In 1969 Santana astounded the 400,000+ people at Woodstock not just because they were great, but because such an "unknown" band blew us away. I knew I'd like TS, but didn't realize how powerful his show (and the rest of the musicians) would be. They "Santana'd" me!

    by Billy87 on 6/13/18Mercury Ballroom - Louisville

This is one talented fun band making for a dang good time. The musicians are excellent and it is hard to have more spirited music. I favor the 'Nawlins sound so I was bound to love this band but it exceeded my expectations. If you ain't movin' and lovin' this band, you may need to have your soul checked out.

by DRight812 on 12/19/15Saenger Theatre Mobile - Mobile

Seeing either Galactic or Shorty in any venue is in itself a great night, but putting these two together "BUTTA" - never ones to dissapoint, they came to Mobile and brought it!! If you ever get the chance to dee these two together, do it!! You won't be dissapointed at all. The New Breed Bass Band opened things up nicely and the night just continued from there!

Trombone Shorty was off the hook

by UpstateCathy on 7/21/15Upstate Concert Hall - Clifton Park

From the second Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue hit the stage, no-one at the Upstate Concert Hall could stand still. The energy and the sound were so great I couldn't stop smiling and dancing. Shorty himself was amazing - the trombone, trumpet and tambourine were mesmerizing - and his singing was really engaging. His energy and his positivity were infectious. And the bass, guitar, drums, and saxophones provided bounce and excitement. I honestly did not know the songs but that didn't matter at all. I would see him again today if I could.

    One for the ages..... UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!

by PhoebeTahiti on 7/18/15Upstate Concert Hall - Clifton Park

This is the third time i have seen Shorty and the band this year - First time at a benefit in DC and second time in New York City in December 2014 at Terminal Five - a huge venue with a laser light show... Each time he was better and better - What made the Upstate Concert experience so special was the room- low ceiling hot crowded and Shorty and guys blew the roof off - I took friends who had never seen him before an we all agreed it was the best live music we had ever heard and the showmanship!!! The man can play... the man can get a crowd into a frenzy and by the end were were all transported to a bourbon street joint - every single person in the room screaming "who dat" and writhing to the beat! -

This show was excellent. My husband saw Shorty at Terminal 5 in the city just a couple of months ago. Said he was great. He had played different music and was glad not to hear the same music. Shorty puts on a great show for his fans, knows how to please a crowd. I would recomend anyone to see him.
