Trombone Shorty is the best-known moniker for Troy Andrews. He was born into a well-known New Orleans musical family in 1986. His grandfather, Jessie Hill, was a locally popular R&B recording artist. His older brother, James "12" Andrews, is a successful jazz trumpeter who was also an early mentor. Andrews began playing music at a very early age and was playing professionally at the age of five. He mastered trombone, trumpet, and drums, eventually choosing the trombone as his principal instrument and thus picking up his nickname. So advanced was he that, at the age of eight, a club in the city’s Tremé district, where he was born and raised, was named Trombone Shorty’s in his honor.
Andrews became a member of the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts' (NOCCA) musical education program for high-school students, other graduates including Harry Connick, Jr., Nicholas Payton, and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. At NOCCA, Andrews took music theory, ear training, and instrumental instruction courses under Clyde Kerr, Jr. and Kent Jordan, among others. In 2003 he was one of five young musicians chosen as the subjects for a PBS television documentary and also performed in the network's nationally broadcast tribute to Louis Armstrong, directed by Wynton Marsalis. Outside his home town, Andrews has appeared with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and has performed with U2 and Green Day. He has also traveled extensively overseas, playing concerts and festivals in Cuba and Europe; he has appeared at the Vienna Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, and the Istanbul Jazz Festival.
As a recording artist, Andrews has appeared on Global Song of Kids, a collection of children’s songs played in the style of New Orleans marching bands that was released in Japan. His first recording under his own name, Swingin’ Gate, was issued in 2002 and featured several of his own compositions; it was acclaimed by jazz critics. This was followed in 2004 by The Same Pocket, Vol. 1 (by the BlueBrass Project) and 12 & Shorty (with his brother James' band); in 2005 by the Treme Records releases The End of the Beginning (by the Troy Andrews Quintet) and Orleans & Claiborne (by Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews & Orleans Avenue); and by four volumes of his performances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival entitled Live at Jazz Fest 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. He also appeared on the club hit "Tufflove" on Galactic's Ya-Ka-May in 2010 before releasing his Verve Records debut, Backatown (on which he not only plays trombone but also sings and plays trumpet, keyboards, drums, and other percussion), under the Trombone Shorty moniker. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
Lot of fun and great music. Guitarist has stepped up recently and horns are great. Bassist is badass.
One of the best live preformances I have ever seen. I had no expections going in. My girlfriend has some strange taste in music so I wasn't expecting it to be good. It wasn't, IT WAS GREAT!
I had never seen Trombone Shorty live and never been to the Space at Westbury. Both exceeded expectations. The Space is elegant & comfortable with a great sound system and bars in all corners. Trombone Shorty was amazing. I am more of a rocker than a jazz person; prefer guitars to brass. Trombone Shorty has a great band. The guitarist from New Jersey was excellent. I loved the enthusiasm of the bass player. The drummer never stopped smiling -- his playing made me smile. Trombone Shorty himself has it all. Plays the trombone & some other horn like nobody I' ve ever seen. His singing is fantastic and he has some cool dance steps a'la Michael Jackson. We had reserved seats in the balcony but we spent the entire show standing in front of the stage.
The whole event was great. The venue had free parking and a good mexican restaurant on the same street.I do recommend wearing some comfortable shoes or even sneakers. When I got there I was told I wwould be standing because I didn't purchase a seat ticket(which wasn't available when I purchased)so that was a little uncomfortable
We have seen Trombone Shorty about six times since we were introduced to him in New Orleans and every time is better and better. We highly recommend seeing him whenever you can. The energy and talent of Trombone Shorty and his band is indescribable!!!
I had seen this band before but they really impressed me even more. So much energy and fun! You have got to check them out!
Shorty stood tall as usual. He is just a supreme talent with very talented band mates. Always puts on a great show.
The show was amazing. Trombone Shorty and his band are amazing musicians and blew me away. I don't typically follow his style of music but it was such a good performance that my entire group (who typically listen to top 40 music) was completely awestruck. Trombone Shorty is one of the most talented performers I have ever seen.
AMAZING!!! What a great entertainer and talented musician. I knew his music and had a great time, but I took a friend who didn't know who he was and she enjoyed easily as much if not more then I did! From the moment he took the stage he rocked it and had the audience dancing. I always compare Los Angeles audiences vs. New Orleans audiences - LA the crowds can be kind of quiet and not participate and as much as other cities, but LA showed up Saturday night and gave back to Trombone Shorty all the love and enthusiasm he gave to us. What an incredible entertainer!!!!
I loved their energy on stage, I couldn't stop moving my feet and dancing! :) The opening band was fun too, The Stone Foxes.
they are great performers. Great music from New Orleans
They just keep playing tighter and tighter... These guys are so young and are playing well beyond their years. Great shows, highly recommend!
I've seen this man, and the band several times. They have NEVER disappointed. In fact, this weekend I wound up going to both shows. Completely different show each night. I went each night with friends who I had brought to previous shows and are now die hard fans themselves. In fact, the buzz in the audience is usually, "have you seen him before?". A young, but very talented and tight group out of New Orleans. Shorty is a natural showman who commands the stage as well as highlighting his band members. He is vibrant, energetic, fun. His talents on the trombone are (I think) actually surpassed with his trumpet playing. With both he is incredible, versatile and precise. The ability to go from very high range notes, to low in a phrase! Amazing control of his chops! The music is uptempo, funky, with an occasional r and b, or rock cover; New Orleans classic or jazz standard thrown in. Most is original music. As always he had the crowd energized and loving it within minutes. He is gracious, yet confident. I really can't describe how fun and talented these guys are. But if you EVER get the chance to see them....do yourself a favor. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
Trombone Shorty was terrific and his band was wonderful. Plus he has a fabulos singing voice, I had no idea.
Spectacular !!! He has taken the music to a completely new level.
Trombone shorty killed it but the stone foxes sucked
Very entertaining. Robert and his band and Trombone Shorty and his really know how to perform, very soulful music.
These guys are absolutely top notch. They love to perform and it shows. Anyone who loves instrumental music and wants to be entertained needs to see these acts.
Robert Randolph and Trombone Shorty both put on a great show. The sound was good and the raptor preshow was very cool. The beer was VERY overpriced (7$ for a faux pint of Bud lite!!) and the line for the beer were way too long. You miss half the show waiting in line for beer.
this man is amazing a trombone and trumpet virtuoso
