About

Trombone Shorty is the best-known moniker for Troy Andrews. He was born into a well-known New Orleans musical family in 1986. His grandfather, Jessie Hill, was a locally popular R&B recording artist. His older brother, James "12" Andrews, is a successful jazz trumpeter who was also an early mentor. Andrews began playing music at a very early age and was playing professionally at the age of five. He mastered trombone, trumpet, and drums, eventually choosing the trombone as his principal instrument and thus picking up his nickname. So advanced was he that, at the age of eight, a club in the city’s Tremé district, where he was born and raised, was named Trombone Shorty’s in his honor.

Andrews became a member of the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts' (NOCCA) musical education program for high-school students, other graduates including Harry Connick, Jr., Nicholas Payton, and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. At NOCCA, Andrews took music theory, ear training, and instrumental instruction courses under Clyde Kerr, Jr. and Kent Jordan, among others. In 2003 he was one of five young musicians chosen as the subjects for a PBS television documentary and also performed in the network's nationally broadcast tribute to Louis Armstrong, directed by Wynton Marsalis. Outside his home town, Andrews has appeared with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and has performed with U2 and Green Day. He has also traveled extensively overseas, playing concerts and festivals in Cuba and Europe; he has appeared at the Vienna Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, and the Istanbul Jazz Festival.

As a recording artist, Andrews has appeared on Global Song of Kids, a collection of children’s songs played in the style of New Orleans marching bands that was released in Japan. His first recording under his own name, Swingin’ Gate, was issued in 2002 and featured several of his own compositions; it was acclaimed by jazz critics. This was followed in 2004 by The Same Pocket, Vol. 1 (by the BlueBrass Project) and 12 & Shorty (with his brother James' band); in 2005 by the Treme Records releases The End of the Beginning (by the Troy Andrews Quintet) and Orleans & Claiborne (by Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews & Orleans Avenue); and by four volumes of his performances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival entitled Live at Jazz Fest 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. He also appeared on the club hit "Tufflove" on Galactic's Ya-Ka-May in 2010 before releasing his Verve Records debut, Backatown (on which he not only plays trombone but also sings and plays trumpet, keyboards, drums, and other percussion), under the Trombone Shorty moniker. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

    Trombone Shorty @ Chastian Park

by Sam on 6/25/22Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park - Atlanta

To many opening acts that really added absolutely no value other than occupying time were on stage during the night. Also , I didn’t recognize half the songs Trombone Shorty played during his performance. I wished he would have dedicated more time to his classics.

All three acts were awesome. A big slice of New Orleans on tour. If you can see this show. You should. The venue is also much improved since the rebuild a few years ago.

    Trombone Shorty advertising short comings

by BartB on 6/13/22Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

I was expecting a Trombone Shorty extravaganza. The event was advertised as a Trombone Shorty event. I left after three sets and not hearing the featured artist. Bogus. A waste of time and money.

A little NOLA in the D

by Rosicrucian on 8/24/18Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

The show was awesome. It is the 2nd time for Trombone Shorty for us. They were warmed up by some young men that Shorty mentors called the New Breed Brass Band. Also a good time. Shorty has his usual high energy, the two female singers fit right in with the band. The encore was awesome. He brought the kids from New Breed and did a chart together than the combined ensemble did NOLA street band march around the venue. It was the perfect way to end the show with these bands together and marching the house. Can't wait until the next time the band returns!

    Too much rock

by DeniseMA on 8/24/18Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

Trombone Shorty - know your audience. I saw him in Detroit at Motor City Casino Soundboard and was disappointed! I wanted to hear Jazz and bluesy soul but it was more rock and roll, especially with the musician with the rock guitar which seemed to drown out all of the rest of the instruments. I saw him at the Filmore last year and it was a totally different concert and one I enjoyed. Many people began walking out midway through the show last Tuesday. That being said, Trombone Shorty and band are very talented, but I won't pay to see him again.

I have to admit I had never heard of Trombone Shorty until the day before the event. A friend gave me tickets and it changed my life!!! This artist is AMAZING! We were up on our feet or dancing in our seats the entire show. I am a now a huge fan and definitely look forward to seeing him again.

    Trombone Shorty was disappointing

by aadfarm on 8/15/18Bethel Woods Center for the Arts - Bethel

After THREE opening acts and 3-1/2 hours from starting time, Trombone Shorty finally got on stage. While as energetic as ever, we were disappointed that he sang and jumped around the stage about 80% of the show and played about 20%. That may be a slight over statement but not by much. To his continuing credit, he does showcase his fellow artists. We saw that Southern Comfort was sponsoring the tour and wondered after the show, if the sponsor or whomever is now "packaging" Trombone Shorty. That will really cramp his creative style and diminish his appeal. Casing the cash never ends well. We will seriously have to think about attending another Trombone Shorty concert which is unfortunate as he is one of our favs. As always the volume level is ear splitting, even at this outdoor event.

What a great lineup - especially the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Trombone Shorty! The venue is outstanding - so much to see, do explore. Great restaurants in the immediate area.
