About

Trombone Shorty is the best-known moniker for Troy Andrews. He was born into a well-known New Orleans musical family in 1986. His grandfather, Jessie Hill, was a locally popular R&B recording artist. His older brother, James "12" Andrews, is a successful jazz trumpeter who was also an early mentor. Andrews began playing music at a very early age and was playing professionally at the age of five. He mastered trombone, trumpet, and drums, eventually choosing the trombone as his principal instrument and thus picking up his nickname. So advanced was he that, at the age of eight, a club in the city’s Tremé district, where he was born and raised, was named Trombone Shorty’s in his honor.

Andrews became a member of the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts' (NOCCA) musical education program for high-school students, other graduates including Harry Connick, Jr., Nicholas Payton, and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. At NOCCA, Andrews took music theory, ear training, and instrumental instruction courses under Clyde Kerr, Jr. and Kent Jordan, among others. In 2003 he was one of five young musicians chosen as the subjects for a PBS television documentary and also performed in the network's nationally broadcast tribute to Louis Armstrong, directed by Wynton Marsalis. Outside his home town, Andrews has appeared with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and has performed with U2 and Green Day. He has also traveled extensively overseas, playing concerts and festivals in Cuba and Europe; he has appeared at the Vienna Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, and the Istanbul Jazz Festival.

As a recording artist, Andrews has appeared on Global Song of Kids, a collection of children’s songs played in the style of New Orleans marching bands that was released in Japan. His first recording under his own name, Swingin’ Gate, was issued in 2002 and featured several of his own compositions; it was acclaimed by jazz critics. This was followed in 2004 by The Same Pocket, Vol. 1 (by the BlueBrass Project) and 12 & Shorty (with his brother James' band); in 2005 by the Treme Records releases The End of the Beginning (by the Troy Andrews Quintet) and Orleans & Claiborne (by Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews & Orleans Avenue); and by four volumes of his performances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival entitled Live at Jazz Fest 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. He also appeared on the club hit "Tufflove" on Galactic's Ya-Ka-May in 2010 before releasing his Verve Records debut, Backatown (on which he not only plays trombone but also sings and plays trumpet, keyboards, drums, and other percussion), under the Trombone Shorty moniker. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

    TROMBONE SHORTY IS DYNAMIC!!

by SB1952 on 6/29/22The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - Detroit

Trombone Shorty is SO GOOD! He seems to love performing and appreciates those with him. So glad he played my favorite (Where It At?) as 2nd song! Amazing power (LUNGS!!) with the trombone and so charismatic. Loved the setting along the Detroit River. Sound system needs upgrading - lots of distortion for all the acts.

    Sound was awful

by Shorty fan on 6/29/22The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - Detroit

The sound system at the venue was horrible Could not hear singers and certain instruments. Also some of the performances were apparently cut short. The frustrations from the performers was obvious. Will not go to the venue again. Have been to many Shorty concerts before and this did not give any of the performers justice.

Nice venue, seats were a little hard , and drinks were a bit overpriced, but I would definitely go back !

    Came on too late

by Mimi on 6/28/22The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - Detroit

Warm up bands went on too long. Aretha Franklin Amphitheater was understaffed. It took 45 minutes to get a drink. Another 45 minutes to get a turkey burger, the other food was sold out. I was waiting in line when Trombone Shorty finally came out.

    Good Show Bad Sound

by GAlex on 6/28/22The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - Detroit

Groups had great energy and stage presence. Problem was we couldn’t understand a word they sang or said. The sound was muddy and blurry even in the middle of the amphitheater. The Aretha has terrible acoustics and does not do the incredible acts that play there any justice at all.

    Less than optimum sound system

by Gounod on 6/28/22The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - Detroit

We love Trombone Shorty BUT- Ticket said time was 7:00 but there were 3 opening acts so he didn’t start until 9:30 Concert venue is pretty but concessions were super expensive: mixed drink $14. Popcorn $9 White claw $9 Hamburger $18 The sound system was loud which was OK but sound was extremely muddy. Hard to understand anything spoken or sung. Neighborhood is not a great part of Detroit. Empty old buildings and streets full of potholes. Closest parking lot was $30. We parked on the street and were happy to find the car there when we left early.

Overall great but the sound was bad

by Marilyn on 6/28/22The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - Detroit

Not sure why all of the gesturing acts had crappy sound but the concert was wack up until Trombone Shorty performed. The mics were off for all of the rest of the acts. We couldn’t hear the singers or some of the band. Not sure why they waited until the end to correct it. Wish I could’ve heard the other ones because they looked like they were jamming.

    Fantastic show

by JK on 6/28/22Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park - Atlanta

What an amazing lineup of musicians! From New Orleans legends George Porter, Jr, Ivan Neville to younger stars Tank & the Bangas. And you can't go wrong with Trombone Shorty. The music was amazing and the only issue is that they couldn't play even longer.

Trombone Shorty-Wow what an amazing show and experience

by Atlanta jean on 6/26/22Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park - Atlanta

Trombone Shorty live is a like a piece of New Orleans floated to whatever city is performing in. What a great show and what a great performer! Can’t wait to see him again. We have been to 100s shows and artists and he is in the top 5 maybe even top two for us. It was some good the other night I looked the tour up for dates near us for later this summer. Do yourself a favor and go see him!
