About

Trampled by Turtles are from Duluth, Minnesota, where frontman Dave Simonett initially formed the group as a side project in 2003. At the time, Simonett had lost most of his music gear, thanks to a group of enterprising car thieves who'd ransacked his vehicle while he played a show with his previous band. Left with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, he began piecing together a new band, this time taking inspiration from bluegrass, folk, and other genres that didn't rely on amplification. Simonett hadn't played any bluegrass music before, and he filled his lineup with other newcomers to the genre, including fiddler Ryan Young (who'd previously played drums in a speed metal act) and bassist Tim Saxhaug. Along with mandolinist Erik Berry and banjo player Dave Carroll, the group began carving out a fast, frenetic sound that owed as much to rock & roll as bluegrass.

Trampled by Turtles released their first record, Songs from a Ghost Town, in 2004. In a genre steeped in tradition, the album stood out for its contemporary sound, essentially bridging the gap between the bandmates' background in rock music and their new acoustic leanings. Blue Sky and the Devil (2005) and Trouble (2007) explored a similar sound, but it wasn't until 2008 and the band's fourth release, Duluth, that Trampled by Turtles received recognition by the bluegrass community. Duluth peaked at number eight on the Billboard bluegrass chart and paved the way for a number of festival appearances. When Palomino arrived in 2010, it was met with an even greater response, debuting at the top of the bluegrass chart and remaining in the Top Ten for more than a year. Two years later, their crossover appeal landed them at number 32 on the Billboard 200 pop charts upon the release of their sixth album, Stars and Satellites. In addition to major bluegrass and folk festivals, they began showing up at Coachella, ACL Fest, and Lollapalooza. The official concert album, Live at First Avenue, followed in 2013, recorded at Minnesota's most famous venue. A year later, the band returned with the darker-toned Wild Animals, which bettered its studio predecessor on the album charts, reaching number 29 on Billboard. Countless tours, playing venues like the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta, with bands like Lord Huron, Wilco, Caamp, Mt Joy and Deer Tick to name a few have followed. 2022 will see the release of the band's latest body of work called Alpenglow which was produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.

    LoNg

by Newfound Bailey Bigger fan on 4/25/23The Overton Park Shell - Memphis

Loved Bailey Bigger’s and Trampled by Turtles’ set but I could’ve done with less time allotted to Leftover Salmon. There’s such thing as too many banjo solos. The entire concert was LONG. The transition between bands/sound checks took up a lot of time. That being said, there needed to be more bathrooms available and more food options. We weren’t allowed to bring water in but there wasn’t a water fountain that worked so you had to pay $6 for water. Which is typical of concerts but it’s like they turned off the water fountains so you had to buy water - lame. There was one bathroom with 2 stalls so there were constant lines and the toilets were foul by the second set. The performances were great but I was underwhelmed with the venue.

    The venue was great!

by Mealama on 4/25/23The Overton Park Shell - Memphis

….until we went to leave at the end of the night and found that someone had stolen our brand new Nemo swing type chair. We’ve been to ally of concerts and never have had anything like this happen. Kind of takes the fun we experienced down notch. Disappointed that it happened.

    Electric performance

by JABU on 1/24/23The Observatory North Park - San Diego

This was probably about the 10th time we’ve seen Trampled By Turtles. In fact it was TBT BTB (Trampled By Turtles back-to-back) at the Troubadour and North Park Observatory. It was our first time at North Park Observatory. We will be back, as the venue and service were great, especially acoustics. TBT is always an experience. The play can reach a frenetic state without sacrificing quality. I have no idea how the fiddle and cello stay in sync from opposite sides of stage. The new album is a bit less energetic but a beautiful combination of lyrics and music. Tejón Street Corner Thieves were a fun surprise. They have talent and catchy tunes and are more than the drunks they profess to be. I would probably like them even better if they toned down the drunk vibe and profanity.

Don’t think about buying tickets. Just buy them and go. You’ll thank me after.

    Paper ticket

by Tim on 1/2/23State Theatre - Portland

I almost was not allowed in to the show, because my digital ticket didn’t work. Can we please go back to paper tickets!!!!! Also, the staff at the State Theatre is very rude. The only person that was not, was the bartender. Too bad, great place to see a show

    Trampled By Turtles Exceeds Expectations

by Serooty on 1/2/23House of Blues Boston - Boston

Trampled By Turtles at The House of Blues in Boston, MA was a great show. Myself, my 30 year old son and his friend went knowing it was going to be a good show but it ended up being a great show. We were all blown away. My son's friend was not even that familiar with their music and he enjoyed it very much. I recommend you go and see them whenever they are around. It is an awesome time.

    Unreal show

    by E3 on 1/2/23State Theatre - Portland

First one back post-ish Pandemic, and it couldn’t have been better. Langhorne Slim is my boy, so glad he was added to the bill, and Trampled by Turtles never disappoints.

Music was great, venue and crowd not so much

by Dancing on 1/1/23House of Blues Boston - Boston

Trampled by turtles was great as always. Love their upbeat tune’s because they’re great for dancing. Unfortunately, very few people were dancing, if anyone at all. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. The venue was not great and neither was the crowd.

    Once again an amazing show

by Chris N on 12/12/22The Pageant - St Louis

I have seen Trampled probably 9 times now and they never disappoint. The shows at the Pageant are always the best. I've been to big rock productions and festivals but Trampled just killing it in a smaller venue is always my favorite. Can't wait for next December

Great venue and a great band

by Joe on 12/9/22The Andrew J Brady Music Center - Cincinnati

Trampled by turtles is a band I discovered recently and became instantly in awe of. They are definitely a band to see live and I'm happy I was able to see them in a venue that kept me close to the stage at a reasonable price.

Tickets did not say standing room only :/

by Shelley on 12/6/22The Andrew J Brady Music Center - Cincinnati

The venue is fine, but I bought balcony tickets and it was not at all obvious that they were standing room only in the balcony. I would have never bought them, my husband has mobility issues and it totally ruined the night.

    Good Show

by Robert on 12/6/22The Andrew J Brady Music Center - Cincinnati

Pokey LaFarge and Trampled by Turrtles were both great. The acoustics in the venue were not the best. The sound seemed somewhat compressed and the instruments weren't always distinct. The personnel and services were great.
