About

Trampled by Turtles are from Duluth, Minnesota, where frontman Dave Simonett initially formed the group as a side project in 2003. At the time, Simonett had lost most of his music gear, thanks to a group of enterprising car thieves who'd ransacked his vehicle while he played a show with his previous band. Left with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, he began piecing together a new band, this time taking inspiration from bluegrass, folk, and other genres that didn't rely on amplification. Simonett hadn't played any bluegrass music before, and he filled his lineup with other newcomers to the genre, including fiddler Ryan Young (who'd previously played drums in a speed metal act) and bassist Tim Saxhaug. Along with mandolinist Erik Berry and banjo player Dave Carroll, the group began carving out a fast, frenetic sound that owed as much to rock & roll as bluegrass.

Trampled by Turtles released their first record, Songs from a Ghost Town, in 2004. In a genre steeped in tradition, the album stood out for its contemporary sound, essentially bridging the gap between the bandmates' background in rock music and their new acoustic leanings. Blue Sky and the Devil (2005) and Trouble (2007) explored a similar sound, but it wasn't until 2008 and the band's fourth release, Duluth, that Trampled by Turtles received recognition by the bluegrass community. Duluth peaked at number eight on the Billboard bluegrass chart and paved the way for a number of festival appearances. When Palomino arrived in 2010, it was met with an even greater response, debuting at the top of the bluegrass chart and remaining in the Top Ten for more than a year. Two years later, their crossover appeal landed them at number 32 on the Billboard 200 pop charts upon the release of their sixth album, Stars and Satellites. In addition to major bluegrass and folk festivals, they began showing up at Coachella, ACL Fest, and Lollapalooza. The official concert album, Live at First Avenue, followed in 2013, recorded at Minnesota's most famous venue. A year later, the band returned with the darker-toned Wild Animals, which bettered its studio predecessor on the album charts, reaching number 29 on Billboard. Countless tours, playing venues like the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta, with bands like Lord Huron, Wilco, Caamp, Mt Joy and Deer Tick to name a few have followed. 2022 will see the release of the band's latest body of work called Alpenglow which was produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.

    Move the camera man

by Heather on 9/19/23Treasure Island Amphitheater - Welch

This review has nothing to do with the music. We sat in section 101 and the camera man blocked my view the whole time; regardless if I was standing or sitting. Paying $98 for a seat and have someone stand in front is poor and the seat should be marked as “obstructed view”.

by tommysac on 9/19/23Q Casino Back Waters Stage - Dubuque

The Trampled By Turtles concert at the Q Casino in Dubuque, IA was an outstanding show! The sound was perfect, not too loud, and you could distinguish every instrument. The crowd was friendly and respectful of everyone's space. The talented members of the band provided a tight, high energy set.

    3 stars

by Rylie on 9/18/23Q Casino Back Waters Stage - Dubuque

There was a mistake in the time of the concert. The ticket and venue both said 8:00. I arrived shortly after 8:00 and the opener had already finished and the stage was being cleared off. This was incredibly disappointing as he was a big part of why I purchased the tickets. Trampled by Turtles was wonderful, however I was very sad to have missed Charles Wesley Godwin

    Great Show… but

    by DDAY604 on 7/25/23

First off, the band Trampled by Turtles were fantastic, this review is more focused on the venue Chateau Ste Michelle winery. Just a few things to note about this venue. 1- They only sell wine and wine drinks (mixed) or warm water. No Beer to be found anywhere. 2- This venue closes early (9pm) so get there early if you’re seated on the lawn. Trampled by Turtles were great, but the venue despite the natural beauty was a bit disappointing.

    Live Nation Changes are Meh

    by MustSeeLive on 7/24/23

Amigo and Trampled were amazing. The new set up for the venue has improvements to be made. Find it odd that they completely removed the standing area. Doesn’t make for that great of a concert experience. A set up similar to Marymoor would be way better. Also, no beer available but has a brewery food stand? Let them sell their beer! You’re still getting a cut and this allows for lower ABV consumption. Loved the parking lot shuttle.

Wonderful venue, pretty nature all around . Great show with a chill vibe. Only companion is the portable bathrooms were really dirty and the pots were nearly full, really needed attention.

    LoNg

by Newfound Bailey Bigger fan on 4/25/23The Overton Park Shell - Memphis

Loved Bailey Bigger’s and Trampled by Turtles’ set but I could’ve done with less time allotted to Leftover Salmon. There’s such thing as too many banjo solos. The entire concert was LONG. The transition between bands/sound checks took up a lot of time. That being said, there needed to be more bathrooms available and more food options. We weren’t allowed to bring water in but there wasn’t a water fountain that worked so you had to pay $6 for water. Which is typical of concerts but it’s like they turned off the water fountains so you had to buy water - lame. There was one bathroom with 2 stalls so there were constant lines and the toilets were foul by the second set. The performances were great but I was underwhelmed with the venue.

    The venue was great!

by Mealama on 4/25/23The Overton Park Shell - Memphis

….until we went to leave at the end of the night and found that someone had stolen our brand new Nemo swing type chair. We’ve been to ally of concerts and never have had anything like this happen. Kind of takes the fun we experienced down notch. Disappointed that it happened.

    Electric performance

by JABU on 1/24/23The Observatory North Park - San Diego

This was probably about the 10th time we’ve seen Trampled By Turtles. In fact it was TBT BTB (Trampled By Turtles back-to-back) at the Troubadour and North Park Observatory. It was our first time at North Park Observatory. We will be back, as the venue and service were great, especially acoustics. TBT is always an experience. The play can reach a frenetic state without sacrificing quality. I have no idea how the fiddle and cello stay in sync from opposite sides of stage. The new album is a bit less energetic but a beautiful combination of lyrics and music. Tejón Street Corner Thieves were a fun surprise. They have talent and catchy tunes and are more than the drunks they profess to be. I would probably like them even better if they toned down the drunk vibe and profanity.
