Tower of Power on Tour

When Tower of Power took the stage at The Fillmore in San Francisco for their 40th anniversary show in 2008, it was as full circle as live music moments get. A recorded introduction by the dearly departed, legendary promoter Bill Graham — who gave the band their big break and signed them to his label in the late '60s — kicked off the energetic musical explosion that Tower of Power have never stopped bringing to the stage. The Tower of Power five-piece horn section, led by founding members Emilio Castillo on tenor sax and Stephen "Doc" Kupka on baritone sax, has been the driving force behind a group with over 60 touring members in its history. The R&B funk and soul revue also features furious percussionists, guitar, keys and more vocal blends than you can imagine. The elite collection of musicians have never stopped touring, and whether at a casino theater or a classic concert hall, a Tower of Power show is always gonna be a kickin' good time. Their Oakland-born sound emerged in 1968, and even after 50 years their shows still manage to feel contemporary.

Tower of Power in Concert

In 1968, Oakland's Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka formed a band with the goal of playing at San Francisco's iconic Fillmore theater. By 1970, Tower of Power were not only on the stage, but signed to Bill Graham's San Francisco Records for their debut album East Bay Grease. When they moved over to Warner Bros Records in 1972, they started to leave a timeless mark beyond the Bay Area with the release of now-classic albums — Bump City, Tower of Power, Urban Renewal and more. Throughout their 19 albums, including 2018's Soul Side of Town, the band have covered every inch of R&B, soul and funk, constantly evolving and paving the way for many other artists.

    Oaktown energy hits A2

by jamandbs on 7/16/09Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

Tower of Power is one of our favorite bands, and we've been pinin' for them since we moved here from California. This show was the all-out wall of fabulous sound we were craving. Larry Braggs was amazing, as always -- what a showman. They had all the midwesterners on their feet!

by TOPfan on 7/16/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

This is my 6th time seeing Tower of Power since 1981. They are just as tight as always. It is hard to believe they are still this good after 41 years of being together. I recommend anyone getting a chance to see TOP lives...do it. You will not be disappointed.

Tower of Power is for Real!

by willride3 on 7/16/09Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

My first live show of Tower of Power. I was absolutely, beyond pleased. A team of GREATS. The Rhythm section is out of this world. Rocco Prestia was a Joy to watch and listen to. Dave Garibaldi is so talented, it's hard to describe.. The Horn section is without a doubt at the top of the game. The keys and guitar perfect. The vocals were shared, the lead vocalist is a talent beyond belief. Emilio Castillo was Great on his vocals. I'm glad they keep Tower of Power going. I would highly recommend T.O.P. for a Good time

It was great to see that this band still mainains the same committment to high-quality music and showmanship. I was really glad to see the four original members, and the rest of the band was awesome. Good mix of songs. High-energy, invigorating atmosphere. A concert I'll always remember.

    Aftre the Rain

by EastbaySoulFan on 7/16/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

This was the second time I saw TOP at the zoo, Fourth time seeing the band. We had to wait out the rain that night and wondered if the show would go on. But the rain stopped and we were treated to a fantastic performance! The band was hot, Larry was singing better than ever and Tom was playing solos way over the top of anything I'd heard him do before. They were in great form and it's always a good time to go to a Tower of Power show. The Zoo is a fun venue to see a show at and Sue Mclean books some fine talent in over there. The production team does great too. Sound and lighting was first class! This band has been around long enough to have sorted out what is important and they have a great time on stage and off. They are all virtuoso musicians and the unity and tightness of the band is evident from the first note till the last goodnight.

Amazing after 41 years the boyz from Oakland Cali are still producing that amazing sound. Their new album sounds killer as well. It was a very rainy evening in the venue (outside) but a good time was had by all. I used to live close to the venue and could have heard this concert from home...they still kick it!!!!!

    The name still fits!

by SmokeyT on 7/15/09Power Center - Ann Arbor

This is live entertainment at it's best! Tower of Power brought a lively performance to the stage from start to finish. Anyone would have enjoyed this concert even if one had never heard their music. After forty-one years this band still knows how to excite an audience, and are as solid as ever. This event was held at the Power Center for the Performing Arts in Ann Arbor, MI, which is a great place to hear and view a show. Ann Arbor is a very hip town and I was pleased to see a crowd with a diverse age group. Tower of Power played an excellent mix of familiar tunes, but I was pleased to hear material from their most recent release as well. The crowd was on their feet for many of their songs, not just the encore, which is always an indication of a high energy performance; and very typical for this group of extremely talented musicians. I attended this concert with my wife, who isn't familiar with most of their material, and she enjoyed every minute of it. This is a must see band! If you have the chance, don't miss it!

The Venue, of course, is uncomparable. Small, gorgeous and intimate. Even the rain couldn't dampen the Tower's Power.

Tower Of Power are the greatest soul/funk band

by willyb on 7/15/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

I've been a big fan of TOP for a long time. They are ALWAYS able to get everyone up off their seat and move to their music. They introduced some new music from their new CD "The Great American Soul Book". A CD of covers that sound better than the originals. Larry Bragg's vocals on "Me And Mrs. Jones"....and those horns...tighter than a clenched fist......and that rhythm section of bass/drums .....WOW. Emilio, Doc, David and "Rocco" and the guys are playing music that NO one else is playing and NEVER goes out of style. They've been playing almost as long as the Stones...true staying power......that's TOWER OF POWER. Play on guys and thanks for the music

T.O.P. put on a high energy show.

by cadillackid on 7/15/09The MGM Grand at Foxwoods - Mashantucket

Great show, I sat right up front. Sound was great, balanced just right. Band was tight as usual. Would have liked to hear a few more of thier classics. They did great encores as the crowd just wouldn't let them leave. Kudos to the TOWER for giving the people what they wanted and then some. Fantastic show!!!
