Tower of Power on Tour

When Tower of Power took the stage at The Fillmore in San Francisco for their 40th anniversary show in 2008, it was as full circle as live music moments get. A recorded introduction by the dearly departed, legendary promoter Bill Graham — who gave the band their big break and signed them to his label in the late '60s — kicked off the energetic musical explosion that Tower of Power have never stopped bringing to the stage. The Tower of Power five-piece horn section, led by founding members Emilio Castillo on tenor sax and Stephen "Doc" Kupka on baritone sax, has been the driving force behind a group with over 60 touring members in its history. The R&B funk and soul revue also features furious percussionists, guitar, keys and more vocal blends than you can imagine. The elite collection of musicians have never stopped touring, and whether at a casino theater or a classic concert hall, a Tower of Power show is always gonna be a kickin' good time. Their Oakland-born sound emerged in 1968, and even after 50 years their shows still manage to feel contemporary.

Tower of Power in Concert

In 1968, Oakland's Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka formed a band with the goal of playing at San Francisco's iconic Fillmore theater. By 1970, Tower of Power were not only on the stage, but signed to Bill Graham's San Francisco Records for their debut album East Bay Grease. When they moved over to Warner Bros Records in 1972, they started to leave a timeless mark beyond the Bay Area with the release of now-classic albums — Bump City, Tower of Power, Urban Renewal and more. Throughout their 19 albums, including 2018's Soul Side of Town, the band have covered every inch of R&B, soul and funk, constantly evolving and paving the way for many other artists.

    They Came To Play

by BoogieLew on 8/24/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

This being my 9th time seeing TOP at Humphrey's i was excited once again to see the band play. Last year i left highly disappointed as most of my favorites were ignored, Don't Change Horses, Willing to Learn, Down to the Night Club... and utter mundane almost a joke of song like "you oughtta be havin' fun" were played. This time around, we were treated, i think for the first time, to some cover tunes. A kick ass medley of James Brown, A somewhat obscure Stevie Wonder song as well as a wonderful performance of the classic "Me and Mrs' Jones". TOP was really bringing the funk this time around. Hitting us with some of great classics early, my favorite "oil in the ground" was amazing. I am still waiting for them to play "souled out" which i think it has been 5 years since we heard that one.... ANd once again they did not play Dont Change Horses or Willing to Learn ( which 4 years ago LArry Braggs sang which may have been the greatest vocal performance i have ever witnessed.) Larry Braggs, in my opinion is one of the greatest soul singers ever. Just captivating, with incredible range and power. Way to Go LB So as they didnt play my 2 favortie songs I cant give it 5 stars, but they brought the funk back after last years disappointing set. A great show!!!

T.O.P. is the REAL THING !

by ernieblue on 8/24/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I would venture confindently to say, that there wasn't one person who left the Tower Of Power concert without a smile on their face and a hop in their walk! I'm a musician, and this is probably around the fifth time I've seen them through their 41 years, and not only do they put on a precision, profressional show, it's gotten better with age. The first time I saw them with their new singer, Larry Brags in Vegas back in 2005; I saw a new dimention of the band evole. This guy brought a breath of youth back into the band that elevated their playing enormously. And now that the band has grabbed from the past as well as the new songs that carry the weight of all those guys; it's a brand new show completely. Again, being a musician myself, you can tell when a band has new material. It shows though just a bit more in their show. Finally, a very classy send off to one of the TOP Brothers, Iron Mike Bogart, who reinlisted into the Navy after 10 years with the band. Now can anyone, and I mean anyone, deny that this is The American Band. Thanks to all members, crew, soundmen, roadies, wives, families of Tower of Power for over 41 years of East Bay Funk

This is our third TOP concert and they just keep getting better and better. They are awesome - each and every one of them. We even stayed after to see them after the show and they were all so personable and willing to take pictures and offer autographs. I will continue to see their concerts as long as God is willing me to do so. YOU GUYS ARE HIP!

    Tower of Power insanely terrific

by Sharona888 on 8/23/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

How do you sum up greatness...I am sure anybody who went to this concert would agree - TOP was fantastic from the very beginning to the end. They ROCKed out. I have been a fan since the 70's but really haven't followed them in years. That has now officially change. I will do personal promoting to anybody who will listen. Go see this group. You will NOT be able to contain yourself ... you will have to move. I love that. The lead singer LB is outstanding they (band and singer) totally compliment each other. Wow. Some of the members have been together 41 years and man did it show. The sound, tightness and professionalism was outstanding. Kudo's to Humphrey's for allowing people to dance on the far aisle (as long not impeding anybody's view) and for allowing TOP to invite everybody up to the front of the stage. When was the last time you did a low five's with an entertainers on a stage. Yes we were that close. To top off - it was Iron Mike's final performance. He was re-enlisting into the Navy and they actually did the inducting ceremony on the stage with 2 Navy guys dressed in whites. Really touching and moving, and what a treat for the fans to be a part of the that. The night was balmy and the crowd was perfect. An awesome small venue to see this phemonenal band. I really had the "best time" at a performance in years. Thank you TOP and Humphrey's..it was a magical night I won't forget.

    Better than ever

by SDMIKE on 8/22/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I have seen Tower of Power 15 or 16 times with various line ups. My wife and I agree they were better than ever last night. The addition of long time horn man Mick Gillette along with the final performance of San Diego's own Mike Bogart made for an amazing night. The band was tighter than ever and were having as much or more fun than the audience. What an unforgettable evening, especially when Mike was inducted and took the oath of the U S NAVY on stage !! Makes me proud to be an American

    Tower of Power Powers On!

by whipmisky on 8/22/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

If you love horns, tight arrangements, fantastic vocals, energized performers and fun-loving master musicians who love to get down and give it up--this is the band for you. I have been a big fan of Tower of Power since my teens. I attended their concert in San Diego in 1973 (at the Hippodrome) for my 21st birthday-- and they are better than ever! The lead singer is smokin' hot--his smooth and natural moves are only surpassed by his vocal talent and range and a major dose of sex appeal. Emilio still has it goin' on as well. I'm still diggin' on Emilio! Last night, they had 6 horns on board (not the usual 5) because they were bidding farewell to their fantastic young trumpeter and trombonist (with TOP for the past 10 years)as he decided to leave the band to reenlist in the Navy.. They gave him a full metal jacket farewell with two Naval officers swearing him in on stage and the audience got the show of a lifetime.

Tower of Power, San Diego, Aug 21, 2009

by ManicBruv on 8/22/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I guess after forty-one years, these guys ought to know how to play a few tunes! They were awesome. The sound was excellent (and what a great venue Humphreys By the Bay is - right beside the water - excellent). T.O.P. had everybody on their feet, grooving to their infectious funky-soul sounds. Impossible to pick out any one member for special mention - they're a simply awesome and tight unit. Fabulous gig. Ten out of ten. Shame that it was Mike Bogart's (trumpet/trombone) last gig with the band as he's re-joining the U.S. navy, but fitting that he bowed out in front of his hometown crowd.

Tower of Power: Great Music, mediocre sound system

by kstowerfan on 8/22/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I enjoy seeing TOP every year, and this was in some ways their best performance. One highlight was the extended James Brown medley, TOP is the only existing band that could do justice to that classic music. Although last year at TOP Humphrey's, the sound system balance, clarity, power, and separation of individual instrumental and vocal sound was beyond my expectations, this year was a real disappointment. The sound levels were loud, but instruments were muddled together and compressed, the bass lines almost unheard, and there was distortion. Voice and sax solos came through ok. Whoever set it up in 2008, get him or her back!

by Ilda on 8/22/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Got what I hoped for and more. Saw these guys a looonng time ago and used to listen to their tape over and over. They delivered a great show. Enjoyed watching the lead singer strutting his stuff and his vocals were amazing. The horns guys were fantastic. Was unexpectedly brought to tears when they gave Iron Mike his send off into the Navy. What a patriotic act!

by PowerPole on 8/22/09Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

These guys were amazing. The horns, well, you know, its old school soul that after 41 years can still put on a great show! My first show, though I am old even to have seen them in the 70s! I would go again ...
