About

Tool have defied conventions and classification through their 30-plus-year exploration of progressive rock and unorthodox visual expression at live shows. Forming in Los Angeles in 1990, the original quartet of Maynard James Keenan, Adam Jones, Danny Carey and Paul D'Amour showed relatively straightforward traces of heavy metal on initial offerings like 1992’s Opiate EP and their 1993 debut album Undertow. After recruiting bassist Justin Chancellor, the band reached major mainstream success with their sophomore album Ænima (1996), which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and netted the band’s first Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the title track. Tool’s notoriety only rose as the band pushed further into more esoteric material with 2001’s Lateralus, which kicked off a streak of three No. 1 debuts on the Billboard 200 through 2019’s Fear Inoculum. Within that span, Tool has also logged two Hot 100 singles, two additional Grammy awards and several multi-year headlining festival spots at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and more.

    TOOL

by litlerob on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

I haven't ever seen tool not put on a good show. But I will say I have also never seen tool put on a shorter show. Too bad for me and my 60 dollars. I still enjoyed the show alot. I just don't think it was 60 dollars worth. Robert

    The Greatest Modern Rock Band

by Chronos on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

If you haven't seen it, you wouldn't understand. It's an almost religious experience for some, a trance for others. Tool is the greatest modern rock band, and to see them is always a privilege.

    Great Show

by code23 on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

Well Tool always manages to fill a stadium with many different kinds of people. And I think I can speak for everyone, in saying, they always manage to surprise. A tool show never seems to be the same twice, even with the songs they play. Excellent light show, very cool backdrop, and unique graphics and clips going on in the background that you will only find at a tool show. I really was impressed. The only think I didn't quite understand is why the show was a bit shorter than usual, I was expecting 3-5 more songs. It kind of disappointed me that the show ended so abrupt. But it didn't effect quality in any way. I also read in the tool forums, that that the show before this was shorter than expected, so they must be doing this, for some specific reason on this tour. But never the less... Excellent show, and they always manage to pull out something new, and impressive.

    Tool band

by billiam on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

Great performance by all the members of the band and the visuals/lighting were spot on. I'd request they not play at the Energy Solutions Arena for the next go-around and wish for longer, more diverse set lists... please!! But anything they do is always over the top, 110% of their best effort. Nothing compares to this band... Hope I get to see them many more times!!

    Expectations To High

by EVP01 on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

I was told by several people that Tool puts on one of the best live shows. Well, it was a total disappointment. The set was short about 80 minutes and there was no encore which was the first time I have ever seen a band not give its fans an encore.

    words can't trully describe.

by LukasJ on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

The all around experience was great to begin with. The lines moved at a quick pace. Everything was easily accessible. The sound was amazing, and i didn't think it would be that good being in an arena that is meant for sound to direct at the floor.

    Once in a Lifetime Experience

by kanman on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

Tool has always been pushing the boundaries of what is "acceptable" and "normal" with their music. They bring the same edginess and experimental experience to their live shows. If you enjoy their music, you will absolutely love their live performances. From the opening act, Tweak Bird, to the guys in lab coats setting up the stage for Tool, to the amazing and mesmerizing light work, to the beautiful, strange, fascinating and captivating imagery displayed behind the band while they perform, everything was absolutely perfect. The pulverizing bass that rattles your bones, the hypnotic guitar licks that dazzle you, the earth shattering drums that cause earth quakes and the melodic voice that leaves scares on your sole, are the defining characteristics of a Tool live show. This was a once in a lifetime experience and I will never forget it. Every moment and every song was perfectly done. This was an absolutely mind-blowing and incredible show.

    Short but sweet.

by t4echo on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

TOOL puts on a great show, full of energy. Visually the best concert I have been to in a long while, the sound at the arena left alot to be desired. Maynards voice distored often, however the band was dead on. One lowpoint.... NO ENCORE! Hoped to hear more but don't we all. Good show overall and I will see them again. Hope they choose another opening act, tweakbird didn't warm up the crowd.

    Not the Right Venue/Maynard sick?

by Subwise on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

Energy Solutions is horrible Venue for this type of Concert. The only time a concert sounds good in Energy solutions is when the band uses Energy Solutions' equipment. Manard must have been sick because he kept leaving the stage quickly and they only played for 1 half hour. The sound was reverberating and loud. The House mix was constantly being reajusted. This is my 8th tool concert and I new this would happen if played at Energy Solutions. The Lighting, effects, and the Band were Awesome as usual. Loved it!!!! But worse out of the 8.

Tool was on it as usual

by bucketoolhead on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

TOOL was on top of their game as usual. So were the police. The police force at Salt Lake City has to be the worst I have ever seen at a show. I have been to a lot of concerts and above all the bands I have seen, TOOL has to be my favorite. What they do on stage as far as musical perfection, stage show and timing is unlike anything on the planet today. They are extremely talented at what they do, and except for a couple of minor glitches with what sounded like equipment malfunction, the show was amazing. I would highly recommend seeing TOOL to anyone that has an open mind, just be sure to obey all laws when you go to Utah, to see them. The police were arresting and ejecting people left and right. It would be nice to see music, even if it is as intense as TOOL, without being baby sitted by the police force, like we are a bunch of little kids. I was pleased with TOOL, as always, but won't be going back to Utah anytime soon.

    TOOL @ ESA 7/19/09

by Gm0ney on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

TOOL, of course was amazing. Unfortunately, this venue time after time for concerts is awful. The place is a concrete and steel box that makes everything sound terrible. Danny, Justin, and Adam were amazing, while Maynard looked like he wasn't feeling well, and his voice sounded like he was sick. The band made up for terrible acoustics, by killing it and doing the best they could. The Lights and lazer show was out of this world, as usual. Kick ass, see you again soon!

    Tool is the greatest!

by ToolAli on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

Absolutely amazing! I am always amazed at what Tool does, and this was no exception! The acoustics of ESA were a little disappointing, would have rather seen them at the E-Center again, but I would go anywhere to see Tool! I will never, ever forget this concert and I will forever hold the image of Maynard in his boxers in my head! Wish it wouldn't have ended! I want more!

    Best concert of my life.

by TOOLTime on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

This concert was amazing! I've never been to a concert with such an incredible light show. They had some trippy videos playing in the background which I loved. And the music was just amazing! Tool plays even better live. One hell of a band.

    Tool......another great show!!!

by ScottinUtah on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

Great show.. great multimedia event with screens, lights, lasers, smoke and the stage acted as a large screen as well. Maynard and boys rocked the house once again with energy and melodic music, the way a rock concert should be performed. A hint of more animation out of Maynard but he still stayed in the background allowing the music to be event as it was. Only negative was the acoustics in the energy solutions center were and are horrible.

    First tool "experience"...

by Joot on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

Upon entering the arena, I began experienceing a feeling of becoming a part of. There were people of all different walks of life and different ways of expressing just that. I am an ultra fan of Tool and all of their affiliated projects, so to say that I was excited falls way short of describing my anticipation. I was not impressed with the openeing band since they were in no way a prog band or artful in anyway, but then I realized the perfect contrast that would make with the rest of the show. It was perfect. It was everything I expected but it was real. I expected to see Danny wail on the drums like He-Man, only with a beutiful soul that reverberated through the arena penetrating every fiber of every person there. I expected to see Maynard dance like a drunken elephant, and stay in the shadows and eventually get very near naked and express in his most beutiful unique way exactly what I feel and challange me with his lyrics. I expected to see a light show and thought provoking images that would insult and delight me at the same time. I expected to see and hear Adam and Justin create sounds with their instruments that would literally take me on a journey and confuse and enlighten me at the same time as well. But what I didn't expect was how all of these together would produce a defining experience in my life. I jumped and screamed and gave every ounce of my energy to the performance and realized that i was not the only one and what i had become was part of an abstract organism that IS a Tool concert. Thank You for the experience.

    TOOL was AMAZING.

by JSMANG on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

My husband is an avid TOOL fan and we have been to their concerts for the past three years- this year it was held at Engery Solutions Arena and it was amazing. They were so good this year and the venue was so much better. We had wonderful seats and could see Danny Carey and Maynard perfectly. It made my husband so happy- he loves Danny Carey. We brought some friends who aren't super in to TOOL- but after last night they definately changed their minds. We will continue to go every year... We love TOOL.

Tool puts on a great show!

by damson14 on 7/20/09EnergySolutions Arena - Salt Lake City

There were laser lights and videos playing, and the band sounded amazing!! The only problem I had with this particular show was at this venue I could not hear the vocals very well. Other than that it was an excellent show and I would go again.
