About

The Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl is an annual college football game held in El Paso, Texas. Established in 1935, the first Sun Bowl was played between two Texas high school teams, but moved to a collegiate-level matchup the following year. The Sun Bowl is tied for the second-oldest active college football bowl game and has historically been played on or around New Year’s Eve. Hosted on the University of Texas at El Paso campus since 1938, the Sun Bowl switched to its current home at Sun Bowl Stadium when construction was completed in 1963. The Sun Bowl was initially home to the former Border Conference, but as of 2011, the two opponents are selected from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Pac-12 Conference. In 2025, the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game will kick off on December 31 at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.

  • Sunbowl 2014 - Devlish good game

by Owls925 on 12/30/14Hyundai Sun Bowl - El PasoRating: 5 out of 5

The setting for the game is in a stadium big enough to hold an impressive crowd but feels small and intimate. The crowd was enthusiastic and was treated to a game that could be classified as a classic. Trailing all game long until late in the 4th quarter it appeared the Duke Blue Devils had pulled a rabbit out of the hat and went up 31-30. Unfortunately special teams play on the kickoff spelled their demise as the Arizona State Sun Devils returned the kick off to the four yard line and one play later took the lead 36-31. After a failed 2 point conversion and with less than a minute Duke drove again to what looked like could be a winning score only to be picked off and thus leaving the victory to the Sun Devils.

Pros: Excellent atmosphere with friendly people and very good halftime show. Prices are reasonable. Parking is adequate if you don't mind walking Cons: Bathrooms could use some major upgrades - are you listening Sun Bowl? Concourse main area under the stands are dark and dreary

  • Great game disappointing seat

by pam211 on 1/3/14Hyundai Sun Bowl - El PasoRating: 4 out of 5

Game and location of the seats were great. My only issue was I paid for a seat and got a place on a crowded bench. The seats weren't actually seats but a "seat" numbers on the bleachers. Looking at all the seating there was no way to tell they werent individual seats, not even on the stadium website. Next time we will be prepared.

  • 2012 amazing SUN BOWL

by Princecredo on 1/3/14Hyundai Sun Bowl - El PasoRating: 5 out of 5

The Sun bowl is about 15 miles from El Paso airport. I stayed about 2 miles from the stadium. But if I was to go again I would stay downtown. They have fireworks and concerts. Also buses to the game for $3.00 round trip. I rented a car and drove all over El Paso. For five dollars gas. Rent a car and stay downtown. Take the bus or drive to the game. Game day parking was no higher than $10.00. No kidding! USC parking $150.00. It's El Paso not California. And I loved every minute of it! The music, culture and the food. The minute the plane landed I was treated with hospitality like I've never seen before. The Sun bowl is a family event. But for a single woman who travels alone I felt very welcome. It was New Year's Eve and the city was alive. I could've of danced all night! So if your team has an invitation to the Sun bowl. Pack your bags and go!

Outside of the song by Marty Robbins, I never had given much thought to El Paso, least of all as a vacation destination. But w/ UCLA accepting the invitation this year and our family plans changing at the last minute, we figured, "What the heck?". It would probably the only opportunity for us to visit there so we booked a trip. Everyone we met in El Paso was very friendly. We found out that the Sun Bowl is the biggest annual event for the city of El Paso and it seems each citizen took their responsibility to be gracious hosts seriously OR, everyone in town is just usually that friendly. I guess we won't know until we go back during non-Sun Bowl time. Again, we really didn't know much about El Paso, so we went in w/ no expectations save for some ignorant misconceptions (e.g. everyone walks around in chaps in boots and says "y'all"). The city is bigger than we thought with many varied neighborhoods. There are a lot of latinos where we live (Los Angeles), so seeing the large population in El Paso was no surprise, but what was surprising was just how integrated the mexican culture was there. Especially fascinating was the proximity to the border. The El Paso Zoo is pretty much across the street from the Mexican border. Needless to say, the Mexican food was outstanding. We tried several places and were never disappointed. The UTEP campus was beautiful (although undergoing some dramatic construction) and the 'Scenic Drive' was simply breathtaking. If you ever do make it to El Paso, you simply MUST do the Scenic Drive. We went to snap some photos the day before the game and were surprised to find the stadium was open and accessible. We ran into some of the stadium staff and they welcomed us and said it would be ok for us to walk onto the field (as long as we were careful to not mess up the freshly painted logos). We chit-chatted w/ them for a bit and then a local newsman came over and wanted to interview us for the news. My only complaint, of our experience in El Paso is specifically about the seating at the stadium. UCLA (Pac 120 was the 'home' team and Virginia Tech (ACC) was the 'visiting' team, but the UCLA side sat facing into the sun while the mid-field logo, speakers, and band/entertainment performers all faced the opposite (Virginia Tech) side. Trivial? perhaps, but as the home team, I would expect these little perks to go to us. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable time in El Paso though. A couple of final thoughts - the city sits at ~3700' altitude, so we did suffer minor symptoms of altitude sickness (mostly a nagging headache for the first couple of days) and because of the elevation, it is REALLY dry, so be sure to bring lotion/moisturizer!

This was my family's first time at a college football game. We really enjoyed the environment and everything the Sun Bowl had to offer. I suggest buying a parking ticket because if you do not you will be walking for a few miles to and from the stadium. There were a significant amount of people drinking so after the third we left because things were started to get out of control.

  • Lack of Excitement

by ArtChill on 1/3/14Hyundai Sun Bowl - El PasoRating: 2 out of 5

The game was decent, more like expectant. However, the stadium lacked crowd involvement. The only way the crowd was involved was to look at the big screen to see if their ticket was one of the 80 to be chosen for a prize. There was no dancing, no kiss cam, no t-shirts shot into the stadium, overall just no crowd involvement. The fans had to create their own excitement by throwing a football around the stadium. So during the breaks or TV timeouts, the game was a little more boring. Add to the fact that both QBs were having a problem with connecting with their receivers and the game plus stadium just lacked excitement.

Enjoyed the event & Atmosphere. Missed the halftime entertainment. The High School Band was to small & could not be heard. We have some very talented HS Bands that have won competitions. They should be rewarded & chosen to play @ event.

We had great seats at the Sun Bowl. We could see the entire field and were close enough to see the expressions on the players faces. If the Va Tech quarterback hadn't been injured, I'm sure the outcome would have been different. The weather was perfect.
