About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • Excellent

I think Tommy Emmanuel is the most GIFTED musician I’ve ever heard. His style is like no other! He seemed to really enjoy entertaining us. The first act was ill, so he did the whole show, and I’m really glad we heard two sets. I wish I had his energy!

  • Great as expected, but felt a bit cheated.

by Jake on 1/15/24Majestic Theatre Dallas - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

I'm a big Tommy fan. His musicianship is second to none. We mostly enjoyed the show but felt it could have been even better. How? you say. Well, we expected him to play a few songs in his catalog that he didn't have time for. And why didn't he have time? He went into seemingly endless percussion solos and I'll argue that the time that was spent (wasted, IMHO) on those, he could have easily play 2 to 4 other expected songs. The question one must ask is: did I pay good money to see a great guitarist or someone who is a Ginger Baker wanna-be. A bit harsh perhaps but my expectations are that Tommy firstly plays what people expect him to play. BTW, I had no problem with the Christmas songs that he played. Lastly, I felt that the light show was a bit overdone. It gave the impression that he felt that his musicianship wasn't enough to entertain the audience and nothing could be further from the truth. I personally don't like the stage lights being constantly pointed towards the audience. I shouldn't have to close my eyes or squint to see what's happening on stage.

  • Tommy Emmanuel soothing and exciting Pre -X Mas concert.

by Concert junkie on 12/17/23The Magnolia - El CajonRating: 5 out of 5

Really good show, it really was exciting during the fast songs and soothing during with slower. Exceptional guitar and big bass ,Tommy especially. Comfortable as always with easy in and out,and the loudness was perfect this time. A couple shows there were just a little too loud,,distortion. Every show at The Magnolia has been worth it. This one was only second to the Dennis DeYoung Grand Illusion Tour that may never be beat. Special for all time, partially the timing of the day before Covid lockdown ,that concert sucked for two years and we are making up for lost time .Rock On

  • Best Concert Ever!

by Awestruck on 12/15/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

It is beyond comprehension how Tommy Emmanuel can appear so joyfully relaxed and yet perform feats on his guitar that I have never seen duplicated. He often sounds like 3 people at once. He so deserved the multiple standing ovations received during his concert. As if his solo act wasn't enough, he teamed up with two other world class musicians, Jerry Douglas on Dobro and Daniel Kimbro on stand up bass to blow us all away... and create an unforgettable musical experience!

  • Jaw dropping talent.

by Jeffo on 12/15/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy is master guitar virtuoso and decent singer. Slightly corny but with breathtaking speed and dexterity on the guitar. Beautiful songs, including Imagine and a joyful Beatle medley. Ended with a jam with opener Jerry Douglas ( who was also excellent). Then encored with American Song by Paul Simon. Recommended for anyone who loves guitar playing.

  • The best

Tommy was great as usual The opening act was also great

  • Needs Better Sound Modulation

by Leigh on 12/15/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is a genius on the guitar. He can make a guitar do anything. That said, even sitting in the back rows of the orchestra, the sound was too amped up, especially considering the age demographic. Better sound modulation next time around, please.

  • Fan-freaking-tastic!!

by Purplehaze on 12/15/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

What an amazing show! Tommy played his heart out and what a nice surprise having Jerry Douglass and Dan Kimbro joining in (and playing on their own for a bit too.). Some great jams, wonderful medleys of Beatles songs, so many great choices of songs, AND EXCELLENT MUSICIANSHIO all around!! Better than expected. WOW! Will definitely go see again next opportunity.

  • An Amazing Musician

by Marc on 12/15/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

My first time seeing Tommy Emmanuel live. He was even more incredible in person than he is in videos. What I didn’t expect was the showmanship replete with a spectacular light show and cool rock star poses. It was a fun performance and I hope to see him again. Just wow!

  • Literally Amazing

by Monty on 12/15/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I hate the use of the word amazing, as folks are not really amazed. But Tommy Emmanuel accomplishes the impossible, achieving what can’t be, thus he is literally AMAZING

  • Nonstop entertainment

by marocker on 12/12/23The Magnolia - El CajonRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy puts on an awesome show. I've never seen anything like his performance. I'm not a guitarist & sometimes get bored with solo artists...but not this one! The sounds he could make come out of an old beat-up looking guitar was unbelievable! His hands made it sound like an entire band!! Very unique artist with amazing talent.

  • Great masterpiece

Opening act was great but when Tommy started to play was something else. I think is one in the lifetime opportunity to attend Tommy’s concert.

  • Truly Magnificent

I watched a total eclipse of the sun recently. His name was Tommy Emmanuel.

  • What an amazing concert!

by Mary Jane on 12/11/23The Magnolia - El CajonRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing concert! I have seen Jerry Douglas on dobro before, but at this show he played for a while solo, and this truly let his talent shine to the fullest. And then Daniel Kimbro joined him on bass, and they played a wonderful set together. Then Tommy Emmanuel took the stage and I was in awe at his playing. A high-energy set that made one instrument sound like four at a time. He was joined by Jerry Douglas and Daniel Kimbro for a few songs at the end. I walked out with a very big smile on my face.

  • Better Than Ever

by Ben Jordan on 12/11/23The Magnolia - El CajonRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is like find red wine - he just keeps getting better with age. I grew up in Australia and have seen Tommy many times with a full band and solo. I've NEVER been disappointed and he really does just keep getting better and better. Every time I am amazed at new tunes and new beauty emerging from his hands and guitars. And I've never see him play a Microphone as a percussive instrument before... this show was incredibly entertaining and even enhanced by spectacular lighting, a first for solo performance. The whole thing came together astonishingly and beautifully. If you have a chance to see Tommy live, DO IT.

  • Tommy does it again

by Connie on 12/11/23The Magnolia - El CajonRating: 5 out of 5

The Magnolia theater is a great venue. Parking was easy and getting in was quick and efficient. As for the show, Tommy and Jerry Douglas were amazing as always. The sound was excellent and the audience respectful. Loved every minute.

  • Amazing as Always

by RogerG on 12/11/23The Magnolia - El CajonRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was very nice - of course I was fortunate to have 3rd row seats so could both hear and see everything. Opening by Jerry Douglas was great. He is truly the Dobro-master. Tommy was on fire for the entire evening. In his words (from an interview some time ago) he "hosed down"the audience with his pyrotechnics. I've attended a number of his concerts - all were great, but this one demonstrated that he is aging in reverse as far as his playing. Some new (to me) numbers were included, as well as a sing-along. I'll be attending every TE concert that is within reach for the foreseeable future, and recommend that music lovers do the same.
