About

Tom Morello in Concert

Tom Morello is one of rock 'n' roll's greatest guitar players, mainly because he isn't afraid to invert traditional techniques or sounds. As the founder of the rebellious political band Rage Against the Machine, he pioneered bold effects — exaggerated funk riffs, for example, or scribbles that resembled a hip-hop DJ scratching on vinyl — to form an aggressive, metallic foundation. His work with Audioslave was streamlined and even rock radio–friendly, although his towering squalls were a perfect match for frontman Chris Cornell's soaring, soulful vocals. And when recording as his more subdued alter ego The Nightwatchman, Morello even indulges his strident, acoustic guitar-playing folk-punk side.

Born in New York City but raised in Illinois, Morello grew up a massive fan of KISS, Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin, as well as Run-D.M.C. He attended Harvard University before heading out to Los Angeles, where he played in the funky hard rock group Lock Up before forming Rage Against the Machine. Even then Morello was a physical player who twisted his entire body into his guitar parts — something still evident today onstage, as he coaxes and teases out defiant sounds from his instruments. Yet Morello also knows how to blend in when needed: His frequent live guest appearances with Bruce Springsteen were so solid that he filled in for Steven Van Zandt during several 2013 E Street Band gigs.

In more recent times, Morello has indulged his penchant for political music with the left-leaning hip-hop/rock supergroup Prophets of Rage, and continued to push himself. In 2018, he released the collaborations-heavy solo LP The Atlas Underground, a master class in sonic possibilities. Although echoes of his Rage Against the Machine guitar squeals pop up here and there, the album also features electronica-swirled collaborations with Knife Party and Marcus Mumford, and a hip-hop-meets-hard-rock jam with Bassnectar, Killer Mike and Big Boi.

What an amazing performance Tom put on! I didn’t really know what to expect seeing him, as his new album is a lot of collaborations. But the video syncing with the singers was fantastic. Then Tom singing himself was awesome! It was such a great show!

  • One of the best ever

    by N. A. on 5/11/19Rex Theater - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Tom Morello is a legend and he proved it at the Rex!! What a concert! He rocked the house from second one. When he asked the audience to remain silent for his Chris Cornell tribute you could have heard a pin drop which was impressive. The rest of the evening he played like the winner he is. It really was one of the best concerts that I was privileged to attend. Maybe next time he could be booked for a two night engagement. He could easily sell out 2 nights. Thank you for booking this amazing cincert

This show was absolutely amazing. Tom is one of the most innovative guitarists ever and plain and simply put a Guitar Ninja. The mix of hard rocking riffs with edm along with his message is just profound to experience. It was fantastic how he linked together his riffs from his time with RATM and Audioslave for and incredible throwback in the middle of his set. It Is hard for me to remember enjoying a show start to finish as I did Morello’s Atlas Underground experience.

  • Great Show!

by Mark on 5/10/19The Stone Pony - Asbury ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Having seen Tom Morello with Street Sweeper Social Club in NYC some time ago, I was not disappointed with the Atlas underground show at Stone Pony. He played songs from all the bands that he was in, an acoustic set and displayed his guitar virtuosity. The lights and visuals were great!

  • Amazing show

by E. on 5/10/19The Stone Pony - Asbury ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Morello is unreal. He played some newer stuff along with stuff from rage and audioslave. Tom Joad was the highlight though. Stone pony remains a very intimate and great venue.

  • Amazing Show

by ME on 5/10/19The Stone Pony - Asbury ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Not what I was initially expecting but it was such a great show. He started playing with a sound track behind him for a couple of songs before a drummer and base player joined.

  • Fantastic show!

by Tim on 5/10/19The Stone Pony - Asbury ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Tom is an amazing and very contemporary guitar virtuoso. This is essentially a one-man show featuring a very cool thought-provoking video wall. He ended the night by asking if we were "all together" and when the crowd screamed yes he invited them on stage to close the night. Great Show!!

  • Down to earth and just plain bad ass!

by b0mbtrac on 11/1/12Golden Gate Park - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Tom at Outside Lands 2012, he was on one of the smaller stages so the crowd was more-less intimate. He rocked the house, every song he played was just pure energy. The coolest part is on the last song he invited about 200 fans to come up on stage and sing with him. He was very political but thats what he's all about, and he managed to send his message in a fun effective way.

  • a little too political

by stinkycat on 9/5/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 2 out of 5

I felt he was a terrific musician, very skilled and wonderful to hear. I wish he played some more upbeat songs. I feel his political messages should be more focused on one or two topics and if he mixed a lot more mainstream music in his agenda would be heard by many more people and his message would be much stronger. My partner and I felt weighed down by all of the deep issues throughout the show. He played just a very few lively songs but them immediately brought the mood waaaay down. We would have liked to have more fun.
