Disappointing with cancellation and crappy bands
by pauliep on 7/6/24Arizona Financial Theatre - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5To begin with, Thomas's Dolby cancelled and didn't play. This meant an extended set by Tom Bailey, which was good, but not having Thomas Dolly really dashed expectations of a great concert. Here is the good and the bad:
Terrible - Eddie Munoz's Plimsouls. Terrible sound, and really, how is this the Plimsouls? Not having Peter Case really makes this band seem like a bar band at best. Very uninspiring, and frankly, a waste of time. Perhaps the tour needed a filler. This was one of them.
Bad - Annabelle's Bow Wow Wow. Wow. I've seen Annabella a couple of times before with Bow Wow Wow, and the good days are long past. Her singing was more like shrieking, with Annabella unable to reach the notes she had in the past. The band was good, but overall the performance was boring.
Horrible - The Tubes. How could these guys even be on tour anymore? They should not be out there. Fee's voice was horrible. Just horrible. Gone are the glory days of the 70's (which makes me wonder, why were they included if they really only had "She's a Beauty"as an 80's song?). Fee looked like he belonged in a rest home. He could barely move on stage, but seemed to want to engage with the crowd. I've seen this band on a number of occasions during their heyday, and it was sad to see a once great band reduced to this.
Very Good - Modern English. Excellent set, which included several new songs. Robbie Grey was very engaging with the crowd and the band was tight. Thoroughly enjoyed them and they seemed to enjoy playing. It almost seemed like they haven't aged at all.
Amazingly Good - Tom Bailey. Fantastic sound, excellent band, and good choices of songs. We got an extra two songs as a result of Thomas Dolby cancelling, but the set was tight and his band (drummer in particular) was fantastic. A very good show complete with lighting that matched the mood of the songs and really brought back the 80's. People were on their feet throughout for this one.
Excellent - Men Without Hats. I was not a fan of this band when they first came out, and I hated the Safety Dance song. But wow, the energy Ivan displayed was inspiring. This guy is over 60+ and his energy level got the crowd bumping and dancing. I really enjoyed this set, even as someone who was not a fan. Everyone was on their feet throughout this set. It was amazing to see Ivan dance, run, jump, kick, and basically act like an 18 year old on stage. His stage presence made the show. The sound was fantastic and really captured the spirit of the 80's. What a joy to see this band.
