  • Fun night out

by Islandgal on 7/17/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

Bow wow wow - totally awesome and worthy of much more stage time that was allotted to them. Please come back and play longer!!! Tubes - bring out the cane! Last minute substitution for the Romantics - should have just let the others play longer to fill that space. You can buy new guitar strings, but not new vocal cords, and sadly those are long gone. Men without hats - brought the energy and sounded fabulous!! Modern English - sounded great. Looked all over but couldn’t find the keyboard on the stage. Hmmm. Thompson Twins - only one twin remains. His voice is slightly off sometimes but he really tries to correct it and mostly succeeds. Band helped tremendously - they harmonize so beautifully and really made everything sound better. I came for the instruments and was overly impressed. 3 keyboards, a stand up bass, harmonica, bass guitar, drums, more percussion, rhythm guitar, some other stuff, and only 4 people. Two keyboardists were pulling double duty with the bass and the bass guitar. Lead singer played 5 different instruments that I counted. Beautiful music, beautiful band, all dressed in white, cool lights, one of my favorite sets. Dolby - one man band, played some cool stuff. Closed it out nicely. Sadly I was late and missed the Plimsouls so I can’t comment on them. Fans dressed in 80s fashion, the music was mostly great, overall a fun night out.

Prices on drinks are insane. But still had a blast!

  • Terrible acoustics that ruined the event

    by V. on 7/17/24The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

I was really looking forward to attending my first event at the Anthem, with some of my favorite 1980’s bands playing, but sadly the whole thing was ruined due to the terrible acoustics. My main purpose was to see the Thompson Twins and I stuck it out as long as I could (around 90 minutes) but sadly couldn’t tolerate it for a moment longer and left before they came on stage. As I was leaving a very nice young gentleman working at the door assured me that the acoustics are normally outstanding at this venue and that the poor sound quality was due to the change of equipment between sets. He asked that I give the venue another try in the future but I’m not sure that I will. I am a huge concert-goer and have been attending shows at many venues around DC for decades, but have honestly never had to leave one for this reason. Everyone else seemed to be enjoying themselves but I was really disappointed.

  • Very Disappointing

by DC on 7/17/24The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

This show was very disappointing; first Modern English and Tommy Twotone were no shows. Also, the concert started at 6:00, but when I got there at 6:15, two of the bands (Plimsoul guy and Bow Wow Wow) had already finished playing! (apparently the show started early!). The Tubes (who I've never heard of) were terrible, the guy has definitely lost his voice. Men Without Hats put on a good show, as did Wang Chung. Thompson Twins played far too long, with only one good song. I would skip this one.

  • Totally Tubular 80's Festival

by Alan on 7/17/24The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Thank you to The Anthem on DC's Wharf/Waterfront for a great venue and kind, considerate staff. Praises also for a cool (temperature) space on a 98 degree day outside. General Admit allowed you anywhere on the floor and back level seating (but floor was set up with chairs too so you could sit during changing of the bands - when you were done doing The Safety Dance!). Pay a little more if you wanted balcony seating. Loved the great music sets, nostalgicaly flashing us back to one of the best music eras of the 80's. These weren't cover bands - these were the actual artists performing their own hits. Eddie Munoz of The Plimsouls, Bow WowWow, The Tubes, Men Without Hats, Tom Bailey of The Thompson Twins, Thomas Dolby, Modern English, and Tommy Tutone. Great time! Also, just know their are a ton of eating options right nearby.

  • Great show - Fantastic Venue!

by MarkM on 7/17/24The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I traveled 4 hrs to see this show - and it was worth it. The Anthem (at the wharf) Washington DC may be one of the most perfect concert venues I've ever experienced. Excellent sound and lighting. I'm looking forward to future shows there. Very organized and has a wonderful/helpful staff. The Totally Tubular Festival is a nice tour. Some off these bands I wanted to see in the 80s, but they didn't come around for me to see. Bow Wow wow - very good. The Tubes - very good. Men W/O Hats - great. Wang Chung - very great. Tom Bailey (Thompson Twins) - Absolutely Fantastic. Thomas Dolby - Very Good.

  • Fun Show

    by Mike H on 7/17/24The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This show had seven total artists, including Thomas Dolby. Thompson Twins, Wang Chung, Men Without Hats, The Tubes, Bow Wow Wow, and The Plimsouls also performed.

  • Do Not Miss!

Thomas Dolby was FANTASTIC in concert! He does not disappoint. I enjoyed his music and stage presence.

  • not music

by schlisp on 7/16/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 1 out of 5

Thomas dolby was the featured musician. In all my years I never seen so many people walk up and leave during his performance. He is an over glorified DJ. everything he did a 5 year old can do on an Ipad.

  • Just OK

by Scott on 7/16/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 3 out of 5

Thomas Dolby is a one man DJ with no supporting cast. No charisma, not much crowd interaction, he is just there. Voice has aged and doesn't sound as good as it once was. Just ok. Knocked ot off a list, but wouldn't see hime again. Thompson Twins and Men Without Hats put on great performances. Overall, just ok.

  • Thomas Dolby Reinvented

by JimS on 7/16/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Wow. Thomas Dolby has re-invented himself. Through a mix of new tracks and clubbie covers, Thomas Dolby featured his best and not so well known songs in a way that makes me a big fan. A must see if those Tubular-types out there, and your not-so-tubular adult kids.

  • Cold and Hot

by BobK on 7/16/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

The overall experience was good. High energy and quality set lists from most bands. There was some lengthy delay between sets, but everything ran smoothly. The Tubes sounded bad. In my opinion Tom Bailey was the highlight and should’ve headlined. Took the family and had fun in the heat!

  • Absolutely fantastic !

Best concert I have been to in a while !! Thomas Dolby was amazing, as were the other acts at Totally Tubular !!

  • The 80s Rule!

by DJB on 7/16/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I love attending The Red Hat Amphitheater and the performers they have here. Thomas Dolby was a highlight of our attendance. This took me back to my 80s roots. As a musician and performer myself, I’m always intrigued by the creativity of others and was amazed at how Thomas Dolby put together all his music and talent as a solo performer. He definitely was on par with my attendance at another great keyboardist from the 80s, Howard Jones. I would love to go back to the time both of them performed together and catch an awesome lineup as that.

  • Very nice atmosphere, but a Hell type of hot.

    by Mroyal35 on 7/16/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 3 out of 5

This was our first time at the Red Hat Ampitheater. The place was easy to get around. Parking was a breeze. The place had an intimate feel with its size. Bad part - no shade. If you did find shade you were told you couldn't stand in it. We were not even blocking anyone and they still made us move. The prices are higher than Coastal Credit Union for food and drinks. $16 for a beer $20 for a wine. The seats were comfortable. Our major take away was the lack of protection from the sun. $5 for water doesn't help. You can bring in an empty water bottle and fill it, but it is not cold water.

  • Thomas Dolby/Totally Tubular Festival

by Tim on 7/16/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Best concert I have been to in decades! Outdoor venue, so it was hot, but well worth any discomfort. Many of my most favorite artists from the '80s, and great performances by all. I would do this every year if it ever became "a thing"!

  • So Hot!

by dmj on 7/16/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 3 out of 5

I wish that outdoor venues would be more proactive during intense heat. Please allow us to bring water. Your filling stations (hoses) are not sufficient. Line were very long just to refill. Let's have some ice please.

  • Lineup

by MTV on 7/16/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

They need to update the website regularly on who is playing? Raleigh no: Wang Chung, Romantics, Tommy Tutone.

  • Not the best experience

by Lovesroses on 7/16/24Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 2 out of 5

On this day the temperature was well over 90 degrees, with very little if any, shade to be found. (show started at 5:45 pm). It's ridiculous that water isn't allowed into the venue! Cost to purchase water once in venue is high. There were long lines to fill your own water bottle. The plastic seats were too hot to sit on. Also, too much time spent waiting in-between acts, though there didn't seem to be much that needed to be done onstage for the next act. As for the performers, it was a mixed bag. Some excellent, some obviously past their prime.
